Historical Traveller Reviews of Villa Marsili Hotel

Everything was superb!

from putid
We loved our stay at Villa Marsili Hotel. I chose this hotel because of reviews on Trip Advisor and was not disappointed.

The entire staff was friendly and professional – front desk, porter, maids, and breakfast staff. The hotel is conveniently located with a bus stop very near the hotel. The main eating/shopping street are within a couple of minutes. We got the standard room with a window that opened to the beautiful views of the Cortona countryside. When we go back to Cortona, Villa Marsili is defiantly where we will be staying!

So glad we came!

Simply, we can not recommend this place enough. Cortona is a friendly and beautiful town with more to do than meets the eye and well worth a few days. The Villa Marsili was an exceptionally positive experience in every respect. Easy to find, and park for starters. Then, each and every member of the staff was truly interested in making our stay enjoyable. In fact, we had plans to visit another hill town, and left that "other" hill town after one night to return to Villa Marsili in Cortona. The view is incredible, the rooms lovely, the fire in the fireplace in the evening charming, the people wonderful, . . and Cortona is a town which truly enjoys life. For a few euro more, it's well worth it. We'll be back to Cortona, and we'll stay at the Villa Marsili.

A gem in Tuscany

from Italianews
We have stayed at the Villa Marsili two years in a row 2005 & 2006 and had the most wonderful time. So wonderful that we are going back for a week this July. We have travelled throughout Italy extensively for the last 14 years and fell in love with Cortona. We stayed in a pricier hotels in Cortona and felt that the service had not come close to the Villa Marsili. The rooms are quite large and face out over the valley and Lago Trasimento. The bathrooms are large, modern and very clean. The staff is superb. They can not do enough to be helpful. The breakfast is very diverse and we love the aperitivo and hor deurves set out at 7:00. When we come back from an evening in town, they have Vin Santo and biscottis out to finish a spectacular day. Thank you to Elizabetta and Samantha............

Great hotel

from travelQwerty
We had a great stay here in December 2006. The hotel is very charming and the staff is excellent. Each evening at 7pm the staff provided a very pleasant aperitivo along with some snacks and they also set out vin santo and cantucci in front of the fireplace for a post dinner snack. There were also some tables outside to enjoy your aperitivo. The view from our room (33) of the Tuscan countryside and a bit of Lake Trasimeno was wonderful. Since it was winter during our stay we did not have the window open at night, but the room was on the street side. Breakfast was a nice buffet with a selection of pastries, assorted meats and cheeses, cereal and yogurt.

fabulous

from chic74
We have traveled extensively in Europe and this was our second trip to Italy. We decided to concentrate on Tuscany and Umbria this time. The location of this villa is excellent to explore both regions. What was also wonderful were the restaurants in Cortona. You were able to walk (up on long hill) every evening and have a great choice of authentic excellent meals. This by far saved the heart wrenching fear of driving at night on the hilly curvy roads. Osteria del Teatro and Hostaria Bucaccia were our favorites. Suffice it to say that wines were fabulous and very reasonably priced. Chianti Classico from Brolio was outstanding.

As far as the Villa Marsili, I have never encountered such a meticulously clean establishment. We felt this alone was worth the stay. The maid service is excellent as are all the staff. They are polite, professional and extremely helpful. Every night there is complimentary cordials and cantucci (biscuits) and the clientele can mingle if so inclined. There is an outside courtyard area, however it is very small and misleading from the pictures. Parking is promplty taken care by the staff but the area is off site and cost EU12 per night. There is an area very close across the street from the Villa where you can park without cost. There was never an issue finding a spot. The "parking entrance" is another heart stopper as it can only tightly fit 3 cars and God help you if someone is coming out when you are trying to get in. The staff graciuosly will help maneuver your vehicle.
We chose a suite that was well apportioned. It was similar to a 3 room apt without the kitchen. The bathroom was all tile and huge. The separate shower was large and there was also a jacuzzi tub.I am a clean freak and this bathroom was immaculate.
The bed was comfortable and linens were changed daily which is a treat in these eco friendly times. We we here for 5 nights and enoyed every minute of our stay.
The "continental breakfast" was by far the best in this category throughout Europe. The smell of freshly baked goods wafted through our window every morning. There is fresh fruit, hard boiled eggs, cheeses, meats, pastries and cakes.Everything served was top quality.
We would recommend this establishment to anyone interested in a Tuscan vacation.

Comfortable, clean and efficient

from millieme
We stayed only one night at the Villa Marsili but would definitely return as we had an average sized room with a very comfortable bed and a sparkling clean shower-room, which was a bit on the small side but still nice. Staff were helpful. Breakfast was a cold buffet with cereals, juices, fruit, bread and pastries, cheese and ham. Only problem was access as there is no parking and the tiny entrance courtyard, where you can offload cases, is right on a bend in the road through gates so needs care. Then you have to either park at the roadside about 50 yards away or in a paypark about 100 yards away at 12 Euro per night. Rooms on the front have a fantastic view to the south and a short (uphill) walk takes you to the town centre which is lovely.

Charming

from zplasty
This hotel a total gem. We had a large 3 room suite over looking the valley towards the east and woke up every morning to the Tuscan sun. The staff was delightful and helpful. The rooms were first class- our suite was enormous with the bathroom taking up half the size! Corona itself was amazing and the movie our course did not do it justice. The town was the quintessential Tuscan Hill town. We were fortunate to be there during the Tuscan Sun Festival and saw a symphony in the town's theater which was incredbile. We were completely pleased and would certainly return to the Marsili.

Absolutely charming!

from 50rocks
Just delighful. Open the shutters in the morning and look out at the beautiful Tuscan landscape and drink it in! Our room was absolutely huge on european standards with a very well appointed bath. The property is beautiful and right in town for great convienience. The staff is very pleasant. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Perfect in every way

from CynthiaLee
Just returned from two days in Cortona at Villa Marsili. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this hotel and the staff. It is one of the most charming, lovely places I have ever been in Italy. This villa is at the top of a hill and provided the most spectacular view and feeling of belonging I have experienced in a while. The entire staff was most kind and eager to help in any way. The rooms were perfectly furnished with everything one might need. I felt at home the moment I walked into my room (#19) and opened my windows to catch the wonderful breeze it provided. I could not find a speck of dust or dirt anywhere. These rooms were meticulously cleaned. My stay was a short stay but one I will never forget and am making plans to return just as soon as I can. As I walked through the streets of this charming town I instantly knew I had to return. A "Little piece of Heaven" it was!

Wonderful hotel in a charming village

from CAPainter
We stayed at Villa Marsili for a week in June 2006. It was a very memorable stay thanks to the charming ambiance, great ammenities, and professional, warm staff. Our room was immaculate and beautifully appointed. One of the more enjoyable ammenities was the food: the breakfast buffet was plentiful and included fresh fruits, pastries, prosciuoto, salami, fresh breads, yogurts, and more -- served on fine china in a very nice dining room. We were able to meet and chat with other travelers in the beautiful courtyard in the evening while enjoying cocktails provided by the hotel. The staff was very willing to recommend and make reservations for dinner or daily activities for us. The main village was a short walk away up a quiet, winding street. We look forward to our next visit to Cortona and will definitely return to Villa Marsili.

Top Local Tips for Cortona

More than meets the eye Arriving in Cortona is rather easy - particularly if you ask the hotel for directions. Enjoy exploring the town, it's restaurants (all good) and shops (very friendly people). Also take time to drive (if you have a car) above the city and into the mountains a bit. Wonderful places to see and don't miss the Castel Girardi restaurant if you're able to drive up the mountain as this place provides a view of Tuscany and Umbria that is second to none - plus the food is all made from scratch. See Le Celle, and sights along the way. Enjoy chatting with shop owners, and becoming part of the town. There's a book on Cortona worth purchasing as well; we bought it at the Villa Marsili in Cortona.

Bring good walking shoes Cortona is set on a hill and is best seen on foot. Take time to enjoy the people, architecture, food, and scenery - suggest at least 2 nights.

Taxi availability There are only five taxi drivers that cover the Cortona area and these get booked up very quickly, so it's best to try and reserve one some time in advance. One point to mention is that their time keeping can be somewhat 'flexible'. We asked for a taxi at 3pm and were told it would arrive sometime between 3pm and 4pm, it then turned up at 4.20pm. The hotel also advised that the taxi drivers don't normally answer their phones between 8pm and 9pm as they are having dinner.
