What a pleasant suprise!

Based on reports on TripAdvisor, we were suprised at how nice our room was with a great enclosed sunroom overlooking the lake. This was one of our largest rooms on our trip to Italy and the staff was very helpful to us! My only regret is we only had one night in this lovely town, next time I will plan to stay longer and certainly would stay at this hotel again.

Very enjoyable stay

I had three very comfortable nights (4, 5, 6 November) in the Hotel Metropole Suisse in a single room.

The room overlooked the Piazza Cavour but also enjoyed a magnificent view of Lake Como. The weather was rather damp and misty but the hotel was very central for sightseeing, shopping and enjoying the "passeggiata" in the delightful town of Como. The ferry terminal was just across the road and it was possible to catch buses to other lakeside destinations nearby. Soundproofing was efficient and reception staff helpful. Breakfast was good and plentiful. It was a restful experience and I was loathe to depart! A return visit is being planned.

I spent two days in this Hotel in Como, it has an astouding view of the lake, the service is perfect and the staff warm and friendly. I definitively recommend it!!!

Very Disappointed

My husband had two night reservations at the Metropole Suisse and I decided to join him at the last minute. We assumed his room would be large enough to accommodate the both of us. That was our fault. Apparently that was not so. Because there was an event going on that weekend, there was little choice in what room we got. They gave us a room with a slight view of the lake, but the room looked so old and tired. The hallway outside our room was blocked by a curtain where they were renovating the other rooms. I was not happy. The bathroom had several cracks in the tile and some of it needed regrouting. I tried that night to see if we could be moved to a renovated room. (they are slowly renovating, I was told). I was told there were no rooms available. The internet access is in a tiny room the size of a phone booth. I kept trying to use the computer (for a fee) one night, but one man was hogging it for a few hours. Breakfast was not included in the room, which disappointed me. I found the service to be lacking. It was courteous, a little formal and not extremely friendly. One gentleman in particular, when I asked for ferry information (which is across the street from the hotel) told me to go outside and go to the right. And what??? Apparently there was a tourist office there, but he didn't say so. And why didn't he just hand me a brochure on the ferries and explain them to me. I am sure they have them available for guests. Also, when coming back late one night we had to park our car in a different garage which was not close to the hotel and my husband had quite of walk. I am not totally blaming the hotel since we failed to let them know both of us would be staying, but we thought the bed would have been big enough to accommodate both of us. If the decide to book the hotel, please request a renovated room.

Como - cold but wonderful scenery

21-01-06 - 3 nights. The website estimated the taxi fare from Bergamo to the hotel would be 65euros.
It was late at night and the taxi was the only option to the hotel. The trip took 1hour and cost 135euros.
We had room 55 on the top floor. It has a fabulous view of Lake Como, and was directly opposite the ferry stop. Nothing special about the room and no coffee making facilities -2-3 star grade, maybe. Okay, to sleep there but we took every chance to dine and drink elsewhere. On one side of the hotel is a very good tourist information office and on the other side is a nice little restaurant which is bright and cheerful. A small restaurant but we were offered a menu in English; something I think which was quite unique around that area.
Recommend a trip up the lake to Menaggio,. wonderful scenery

Ho Hum Hotel - Great Location - Poor Service

We stayed at this hotel for one night at the start of September 2005. Hotel can't be better located, if you want to stay at Como. It has a fabulous view of the Lake, and is directly opposite the ferry stop - so it is incredibly convenient.

Rooms are ok (very tired, but everything works) - and would make the 2-3 star grade in Australia, but is apparently graded as 4 star. Internet access comprises a small computer in a room the size of a phone-booth, at a fee.

Our initial contact with the reception staff was unpleasant - incredibly rude and unhelpful. We were given a smoking room, and when I asked if it was possible to have a non-smoking room, all I was met with was 'all full - all full' with no apology ... totally devoid of pleasantness.

Would not stay there again.

Nice hotel and great location

We spent 3 nights here and enjoyed our stay. It is right in Piazza Cavour, steps from the lake and shopping.

The room was very clean, as was the hotel. The only downside is parking. You must park in an underground lot about 5 minutes away but that isn't so bad.

All in all great hotel and great price

Excellent Hotel in a perfect location

We were very pleased with this hotel... after a horrible experience with a hotel in Florence, this was a welcomed change. Beautiful decor and friendly staff. The location of being right on the lake and adjacent to Piazza Cavour was nice for exploring, etc. It did get a little loud, but that was expected. Beautiful rooms, linens, etc. The staff was also great for recommending places to eat and helping to arrange travel. We would definitely return to this well priced hotel.

Great town centre location over lake

I followed the reviews from Trip Advisor. This hotel was difficult to book on the internet, because it kept saying it was booked out...I suggest giving them a direct call. We got a fab double room overlooking the lake with an interior balcony (useful as the weather was rubbish). The restaurant was quite acceptable, the concierge and staff were very helpful, the place itself has a very eccentric charm, with parquet floors and wallpapered doors...it was elegant and unique. I'd go back again.

I just recently had a chance to go to Como after a long week of work in Milan. It was fantastic to reach by train in just under 1 hour. Moments from the train station was the Main Square where I found this charming Family operated hotel. The room was very comfortable, the view out of this world and the service was fantastic. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Top Local Tips for Como

Driving in... Follow signs for centre of town, Como is a big place really and the Hotel Metropole Suisse sits on the waterside in a square which is hard to access from the road (bus lanes etc). Head for McDonalds signs as when you reach McD's you can see the lake and the hotel.

Experiences good and not-so-good If you go in May, take an umbrella. It can pour with rain, wet, squally and miserable, although it is fairly changeable and does 'clear up' quite quickly. And take a waterproof top-coat. Shopkeepers were doing a brisk trade in waterproof cagoule-type garments to tourists. And they're not cheap. It's well worth a trip to Milan by train, just under an hour. We travelled from Como Nord on a stopping train and the return fare was Euros 7 each. Visit the Quadrilaterale d-Oro, the shopping streets with Prada, Dolce and Gabbana etc. There are two or three "factory shops" where you can get designer clothes at big discounts. For dining out in Como, I suggest you avoid Albergo El Duc: all show and no substance, dreadful food i.e. almost certainly tinned seafood, and cardboard-tasting pizzas at inflated prices. We had two very nice meals at Pizzeria Don Lisander, it's a basement establishment just along the lake front from the Piazza Cavour. Good value, tasty food and cheerful service.
