Top Local Tips for Castel Gandolfo

Station has no name. When you arrive in Castel Gandolfo by Train, the station is very small and you may not be able to see a station sign. The big clue you are in Castel Gandolfo is the large lake below you.

Sit here and people watch Park at the Belvedere and walk up the hill to the village, which is perched on the crest of the volanic crater rim. What a setting! From the town the views to the sea on the one side and the lake to the other are superb. There's a beautiful gem of a church by Bernini, with wonderful sculptures of angels carrying the altarpiece. The tourist office (such as it is) is down the shady slope to the left of the Papal Palace from the Piazza. You can get a map there. The Pope was in residence during our visit, and the Swiss Guard do a 'changing of the guard'. Everything closes for lunch, but one gift shop stayed open and I bought some great things from a lovely lady. Try the gelateria with the metal chairs; they do an icecream sundae for two to share, to die for! The atmospere in the town is warm and peaceful, and we watched a wedding crowd outside the church. People watching at its finest!

Castel Gandolfo - don't bother Generally seems to be a rather run down area. Lake seems nice (only spent an afternoon & overnight there). Avoid Hotel Villa Degli Angeli like the plague. Gets busier in evening when communters come home & seemingly all go jogging. Maybe more fun at weekends but surrounding towns all seem pretty run down too - all rather like a sixties family holiday destination that has fallen on hard times.
