We stayed at Grand Hotel Vanvitelli in Caserta April 2004 with a family of 5 (12, 10, 3 yr old boys). We have traveled all over the world at all quality types 2-5 star hotels and this rates as a 5 star hotel (rooms and service) at 2 1/2 star prices (even at poor Euro conversion rates) They did not mind 3 active but well behaved boys in the least. The only (and I mean only) negative was the pool with incredible fountains & statues was not heated in April. The rooms were beautiful & roomy (I think we had 2 rooms that cost total $250 US per night) It was easy to find (not always the case in Italy). The staff spoke English well, were very capable and professional. It was a memorable stay. We stayed here en route to Capri after our overseas flight from the US and visited the Caserta castle. The castle was very very grand (similar to Versailles in architecture) but it does not have the $$$$ to keep it up in splendor the way many other castles have. I believe the proximity to Pompeii was good (maybe 1 1/2 hours) so it would be good stop enroute to or from there. I would highly highly recommend the hotel if it in your path to or from another destination. Caserta itself is not a destination city other than the castle. Good luck!!!
