Far from being a blissful taste of life in Capri, La Reginella is a dirty, rundown, damp and musty dive whose room rates are ridiculously overpriced for what you get.
The very first thing I did when my friend and I arrived there just a couple of weeks ago was sweep the horribly littered patio in front of our (completely viewless) room. That made things feel a little better.
On walking into the room itself, however, we found that it was first of all WET. There was a puddle on the floor right near the door. Not only that but the whole place smelt horribly musty and, worst of all, the bedding was palpably damp! The beds were metal-frame camping type beds which sagged, the bathroom was spacious enough but looked like the kind of bathroom you'd expect in a camping ground or prison, with chipped old tiles, hot water that runs out before you've finished your shower, and a general look and feel of total neglect.
Breakfast was, again, fit for a pauper. White bread (!), margarine, some dry brittle toasty-looking stuff, a plastic pack or two of marmalade, some cubes of margarine, and a dirty cracked old pot of tea (I exaggerate not!).
While nothing against the 'hotel' itself (a misnomer if ever there was one!), it is not accessible by road. You have to walk the 15 minutes from the nearest square and have a porter take your bags up there for a fee of 7.50 Euros.
The only thing in its favor was the extremely nice woman who dealt with us. However, as nice as she was, not a finger had been raised to make our stay at all comfortable.
Being as intolerable as it was, we decided to cut our stay short and moved out after the first night. To add insult to injury, we were charged, what admittedly we knew from the start to be, the full room rate of 80 Euros, but which after a smelly, musty, saggy, ugly night there was just another reason to never go back.
Avoid at all costs. I can guarantee that, short of being caught in a blizzard, you will have a more pleasant stay on Capri sleeping under the stars than subjecting yourself to the overpriced dilapidation of La Reginella.
