Top Local Tips for Bolzano

Dining and Walking in Bolzano Take time to walk around Bolzano..great place for outdoor dining and walking. Beautiful city with a great mixture of Italian and Austrian influences.

Great City to experience the South-Tyrol Bolzano is a beautiful city, easy to reach by train and well serviced by buses. It is a fairly large city with a population of about 100K and offers great stolling along the River Talvera, stunning views of the Dolomites and an oppourtunity to visit the Iceman in his own first rate museum - rent the audio guide as most signage is Italian or German. Travellers might want to read-up on the recent history of this area as it will help to understand why in Italy it feels like you have visited Austria. A suggestion is to visit the TI as soon as you get to town, it is not open late or Sundays. If alpine hiking is your thing be sure to take the bus to the Seiser Alm... it is stunning!! One dissapointment was the little train that operates above Bolzano from Oberbozen was closed during our visit due to the large cable car being out of service until Autumn 2008.

Drinking and munching your way thru Bolzano Do a pub crawl if you visit Bolzano. There are 3 good breweries/bars in Bolzano, Hopfen & Co., Paulaner Stuben and Forst Stuben. Try the Paulaner Salvator Doppelbock and the Forst Sixtus if you like dark beers. Also, stop into Gasthof Fink and try one of their Knödel dishes. yummmm.
