Historical Traveller Reviews of San Mamolo Hotel
A friendly, charming hotel,
We just returned from a four-day stay at the Hotel Porta San Mamolo, and we loved it. The hotel offered excellent value for money, but even better, the friendly staff bent over backward to make sure we had an enjoyable stay. They gave us maps, made restaurant reservations for us, and seemed genuinely interested in whether or not we had a good time. Our room on the top floor was a good size and we had a great view over the rooftops to one of the leaning towers, while the sound of churchbells wafted into the room. It is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the hotel to Bologna's centre, but we thought this was a good thing, as our neighbourhood was quiet and peaceful. Since we were there for a romantic weekend, we made the most of the comfortable, quiet room. As we drove away in a taxi to the airport, the front desk clerk actually walked outside and waved us goodbye. We will most certainly return to the Hotel Porta San Mamolo the next time we go to Bologna.
Wonderful stay in Bologna
I can't say enough about this hotel in Bologna. It was the least expensive suite during our trip through Italy and also the roomiest.
Clean, well appointed, wonderful courtyard and breakfast room.
The owner even took our bags to the room. He spent time talking with us while we drank some wine in the courtyard.
Walking distance to the main sites.
This was the finest hotel we stayed in during a 10 day vacation.
Great Quiet hotel off the busy streets
We loved this wonderful small hotel with all the amenities and super helpful staff. The breakfast was delicious and the help was so kind and prompt. The owner even gave us a bottle of his own vineyard's excellent wine when I asked where to buy a bottle on our first night. We stayed 4 nights, and though it is a walk to the city center, it was worth the effort and helped us work off our large meals! This hotel is a real find - it really felt more like an apartment than a hotel as it is in a residential area. A great family restaurant - Quindici, an osteria known for its belly-filling gourmet meals at prices that won't empty your wallet (via Mirasole 15) is on the next block and well worth it.
Wonderful little hotel!
It is a romantic little hotel with high quality accommodation. The room was large, very confortable and new, and very well decorated, in a bright, relaxing and elegant style. The courtyard where breakfast is served is lovely and quiet. The whole hotel is just full of charm and the personnel is helpful, warm and welcoming. Absolutely worth recommending, although difficoult to find if you come by car!
This was our least expensive hotel and one of our favorites. The staff is outstanding and I felt like we were staying at a private hacienda. The grounds were beautiful, the breakfast room lovely, free internet access in the lobby, etc. The restaurant down the street they recommend is WONDERFUL. It was fun to climb the tower in the center of the square. I'm not an architect or mathematician, but I swear it was leaning more than Pisa and what a spectacular view from the top.
I would most definitely stay here again.
Very nive holidays in Bologna
In September 2006 I had with my wife a 5-day vacation in Bologna. The Hotel Porta San Mamolo was very nice, very friendly staff, good location in a small and quiet street, the breakfast was excellent, only some minutes walk to downtown (Piazza Maggiore). Unlike to the other tripadvisor reviews we missed some cleanliness in our room (in our bathroom the sink of our shower was blocked with tons of hairs). In the same street only one minute from hotel there was a nice restaurant Al Sangiovese. Bologna is a very save city and we never had an unsave feelig even when we walked in the night after dinner from downtown back to our hotel. We enjoyed our stay in Bologna and we are sure to come again to this nice city.
very welcoming staff
Hotel is nice and very clean. Although it's smaller & the lobby a little different than what we saw on pictures, we had a comfortable stay. Our room & bathroom were brand new and a good size. Great water pressure! Bed linens & towels felt brand new and everything felt clean. Breakfast room is very nice & the breakfast buffet was very good. The staff was very accomodating and made our stay great. Because of the kindness of the staff and cleansiness of the hotel, we would stay there again. The restaurant on the corner "San Giovanni" has great home made pastas. One of our most memorable meals in Italy.
We only had one night at this hotel, but it was lovely. Staff were very friendly and helped us with whatever we needed. We stayed in a room facing the street but did not suffer from street noise. The rooms are air conditioned with remote controls to adjust temperature. We stayed in a room that was off the garage door - just be sure they show you the button to open it! The bathroom was exquisite - maybe triple the size of my own.
Breakfast was very tasty and in a lovely conservatory. Highly recommended.
The best hotel in Italy!!
My husband and 5 year just returned from Italy and this hotel was awesome. The rooms were clean and attractive, the breakfast was fantastic. The little courtyard was a nice place to rest in the afternoon. The staff could not have been more helpful or friendly if they tried. They went out of their way to help us and make us feel at home. They were available day and night. They were such hard workers I actually wondered when they slept! I hope to get back to this place some day. The food in Bologna was great too. The place right around the corner from hotel was excellent.
If you stay here Roberto and Irene will take good care of you.
Little oasis in a city
Fantastic hotel with an italian character and an up to date modern feel, located within the city walls. Well worth the effort of trying to find it (we used viamichelin website for directions). First appearance from the outside seems small but opens out inside to a very well designed and maintained reception area leading into a super courtyard and breakfast room within a little garden.
Rooms a very clean with quiet air con and spacious bathroom.
The staff were very helpul with all our needs from a street map for the city explaining where to go etc, secure garage parking for our 5 motorbikes to even arranging a taxi to take the men to the ducati factory while the girls went shopping.
Well recommended, wish we had more time there.
Top Local Tips for Bologna
Make sure that after you purchase your train ticket, that you get it stamped in one of the machines before you board the train. The ticket agents don't advise this and once you are on board, you can get a penalty of 25 euros for not having the ticket stamped.
Bologna deserves more attention
This was our only time in Bologna and we were amazed at how interesting, attractive and clean the city was. The main piazza in the old section is beautiful and San Petronio is very special in it's artistic and historic significance. It is much different from a lot of other churchs we saw in other historic towns and deserves to be more widely written about and visited. Also the city is far cleaner and less crowded than the other main tourist draws. We were surprised that Bologna has so little attention on Trip Advisor and in other tourism media. It deserves more.
Walk up to the Basilica de San Luca and enjoy the best views & pizza in Bologna
Make sure you pay a visit to Da Vito's when you have made it up to the Basilica. Enjoy the views and then head for lunch before braving the walk back. The restaurant is a gem - views out the front across the hills, friendly and efficient staff and gorgeous pizzas and salads.
