The Paradise Is Everything They Say It Is!

Having never been to Bologna, we turned to TripAdviser to see what members recommended. Rest assured that none of the accolades heaped on the Paradise Hotel are exaggerations! It is a clean, quiet, comfortable hotel, and for accommodations of its quality and convenience, remarkably affordable. We booked it on ---- and our room was waiting for us when we requested, and at the price quoted. The delightful desk clearks, Francesca and Monica, speak excellent English and were great sources for shopping and restaurant tips. And speaking of the latter, there are a bunch of great, very affordable "trattatorias" within a block or so of the hotel. Our room was spotless, and there were envelopes with "thoughts for the day" waiting on the nightstands. The bathroom was clean, well-appointed and had a great shower (and a bidet!). The breakfast buffet was extensive, fresh and varied. (And more uplifting little thoughts-for-the-day were available from the jars on the rack near the breakfast room entrance.) We easily found the hotel, which is about a 15-20 minute walk from the central station, just a block off Via d'Independezia (sp?) in a quiet neighborhood, and yet only 10 minutes or so by foot from Piazza Maggiore, the heart of the city. (Get a free map of the city from the tourist office in the station and have them indicate the Paradise Hotel's location on it for you.)

For an excellent tour of the city, book any of the walking tours at the Tourist office in Piazza Maggiore. Tours are in English and are free, but you have to book the day before. Our "Classic Bologna" tour was conducted by a professor of architecture from the university and we saw and learned things not mentioned in any of the guidebooks. One day we took a daytrip over to Ravenna, about an hour or so away by train. It was extraordinary seeing the Byzantine mosaics looking as clean and fresh as if they were just created last year, though most dated from the 5th and 6th centuries.

Our only disappointment was that our stay in Bologna was too short. There was so much more to see in this clean, friendly, hospitable, historic and fun-loving city, which, incidentally, is also sadly often overlooked by many tourists from the States. The Paradise Hotel is a great base for seeing it all--and fortified with their awesome breakfasts, it's easy to do so.

An Apartment at the Paradise

We had a very pleasant 6-night stay here in Sep 2005. We actually stayed in an apartment just across the street from the main hotel. For 93 euro a night we had a large room with sleeping, sitting, and dining areas, full kitchen facilities, and of course private bath. This price included cleaning only on Tue, Thu, and Sat, but we had no problem getting clean towels every day. It also included breakfast in the hotel — pastries, cereal, yogurt, juice and coffee.

Don’t look for fancy decor or luxury at the Paradise, but the room was quite comfortable, and it was nice to have so much space and to be able to have a bite to eat in the room at times when we were tired, not particularly hungry, and didn’t want to spring for a restaurant.

Our only complaints were that the room was quite dark, with very little view, and that it could have been better dusted. The bathroom was cleaned well, however, and that’s the main thing. The street was quiet but well located to walk to all the main sights of Bologna as well as the train station within 10 or 15 minutes. You just had to be careful when opening the door into the narrow street to watch out for scooters racing around the corner! Service was pleasant and friendly.

There is an Internet cafe just across the street, but we found the one a few blocks down on Via Oberdan (Happynet) a better deal — only 3 euro an hour, and we could plug in our own laptop.

We would not hesitate to recommend the Paradise to anyone for a good value in Bologna.

Excellent hotel

Only stayed a night. What a shame.
One of the staff lent me there car park outside the door. The hotel is excellent and strives to go the extra mile in every respect. I loved the place. It was so handy to everything. I can recall the breakfast as being yet again, striving to be better that the rest. Truly excellent. These guys really try and I enjoyed it.
I'd be back in a flash.

Excellent Management

Situated on a quiet side street conveniently located close to all the major tourist attractions and run by two wondeerful, conscientious, caring managers: Monica Grazia and Francesca Curuzzi. We had a nice, quiet room on the third floor with an electrically controlled sky light. Francesca answered all my e-mails and Monica answered all my questions making our stay quite enjoyable. The breakfasts were good and the hotel service excellent and the hotel itself extremely well run. Two highly recommended restaurants did not pass muster: Surprisingly, two major dishes served by Petroniano were too salty and the service in Taverna die Lords was poor. We felt very comfortable at Hotel Paradise because of the excellent management and would definitely return if we could somehow find a way to avoid all the cigarette smoke in the streets of Bologna.

A little bit of Paradise

This hotel is located on a small, quiet street in central Bologna. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Our standard room was miniscule, only enough room for the bed, a built in desk and wardrobe. It looked out on an alley, but that was fine with us because it was quiet. The bathroom was also teeny, but both bathroom and room were immaculate. Little slips of paper were squirreled throughout the room containing optimistic philosophical sayings, which contributed to the funky feel of the place. Bologna is very hip and cool, filled with young people and students, and although we only spent one night there, we would probably return and stay again in Paradise!

We were upgraded to a 2-bedroom apartment because the hotel had run out of rooms. The entire apartment had been very recently renovated in a very sleek and contemporary Scandinavian design. Each bedroom was tastefully decorated and contained its own air conditioning unit. The kitchen was cozy but gorgeous. The staff at the front desk was also extremely helpful and pleasant at all times. Breakfast provided a number of tasty options in a small setting. Walk to the city center or the university is about a 10-min. walk.

The Apartment for 4 was perfect

It would be hard to find a room for 4 at this price and so close to everything in Bologna. We had to walk up about 20 steps and were at the top of the building (across the street from the hotel), but the room was very large, the view of the rooftops was enchanting, the bath was modern, large and updated. The a/c was ok, not cold by Houston standards. The futon bed was ok, but the other beds were fine. The bed area had a screen to seperate it from the living area. We didn't use the kitchen facilities except to keep our water in the fridge.

The breakfast was excellent as was the reception we received. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Does what it says on the tin

This Hotel is a little gem that does exactly what it says on the tin.
Very convenient location, the airport bus stop at Arena del sole is 150 metres away, handy to walk around the city.
Rooms very swish and modern. Staff don't bite!
The barbers shop outside run by Enso is great.
Good choice for breakfast if a tad cramped. Good value.
Will definately rush back to this Hotel and Bologna.

Loved the Paradise Hotel

I read about the Paradise Hotel at the tripadviser web site. All the reveiws gave it excellent comments. It was an excellent hotel to stay in while in Bologna. The Front Desk staff were great and all spoke English. If you needed help finding a store etc. they showed you on the map and also told you. The lobby had a copy of the Herald Tribune, the English newspaper available for guests to read. The rooms were very well decorated and the bathroom had a basket of all kinds of goodies including small tissues packs, razors, toothbrushes and toothpaste. There were candies and a welcome card in the room also. Breakfast was served in a delighful room with no smoking alllowed. Coffee orders were taken for each person and served. The food selection was delightful for a breakfast included with the room. All of the staff greeted guests and the elevator worked all the time! This 3 star hotel was a treat for our last 2 nights in Italy.

Great Hotel

I used Hotels to book the reservation. Mistake!! They never forwarded the reservation to the hotel. We arrived without a room. Fortunately, they had one available. We were given a good deal. Very accomodating. Excellent room!! The best we stayed in during our vacation. Excellent breakfast buffet. Good location on Bologna though it is NOT a "few meters" from the train station as described. It is more like 3/4 of a mile. We would stay here again in a minute.

Top Local Tips for Bologna

A city of science With the oldest university in Europe, Bologna has a rich history of science and culture. The area has been inhabited since 900 BC beginning with the Etruscans. There is an excellent archeology museum, you can visit classrooms where students studied in the 1600. You will not find the Renaissance art of Florence, but you will find a city steeped in history. It is easy to explore the surrounding region by in expensive and convenient train. A day trip to Venice is easy. The food, of course is fabulous. There is an excellent outdoor market. You can have a coffee a pastry in a differnet cafee every day and not be disapointed once. Also, some of the best gelato I have eaten in Italy. The city is also fantastic for walking, with any area in the cental district reachable in 15 minutes. This wold be a great stay for 3-5 days.

Foodies Heaven This city is the Gatronomic Centre of Italy and from our experience it lived up to the reputation. Wheather a full blown 3 hour meal or a Pannini at the counter or on the hoof the food was fantastic.A wide choice of restaurants and pizzerias.Often the later also serve other traditional Italian food at good value

University town Any night is a good night. We figured out that a lot of business people go to Bologna for conventions, and it is also a University town. So you can count on good food at various price points and good nightlife.
