Top Local Tips for Bologna

Eat local Don't eat the fast food - McDonald's and carry out pizza, have lunch at the Tamburini cafeteria. For good value dinners, don't eat in the basic places or the high end restaurants. Choose a local, family run Trattoria. Eat the local and regional pastas and grilled meats with the house wine. Fabulous quality and excellent value almost without exception.

Let's go shopping! Bologna barely rates a mention in the guidebooks, but after living and touring Italy for a year, we were quite surprised at what the town has to offer ... a fair share of historic buildings and churches, walls, the university, great food, lovely covered walkways, accessible buses, and LOTS of places to shop! Most Italian stores carry outrageously priced merchandise and Bologna has some of that too, but most of the stores I shopped were affordable and interesting. I'll be recommending this stop for anyone travelling the northern part of Italy.

Make sure to wear a sleeve t-shirt and pants when you enter the Churches Some of my colleagues who wore a spaghetti shirt and shorts were not allowed to enter the Catholic Church. I was suprised at how strict they were here. But I wasn't shocked because I am Catholic myself and I have seen some people denied to take the communion if they are wearing a sleeveless blouse.
