Top Local Tips for Bergamo

Getting around is easy and cheap Buy a day rover at a tobacconists or the main station's kiosk etc. You can even get one that gives you a day's travel on the buses AND funiculars and then takes you out to to the airport for your flight home. And it costs about £3 or £4. There are two funiculars. The lower one runs from the "Funicolare" bus stop (Line 1) and takes you in the to main part of the old town. The upper one takes you from Colle Aperto (which is also served by the buses from the lower city) up to the castle at San Vigilio (great views from the top in fine weather of the alps). Opposite the upper entrance to this funicular is the San Vigilio restaurant. Do not pass it by! fabulous views from its glassed-in terrace..... Buses will also take you out of town to the Carrara art gallery. Milan in an hour by train from Bergamo station, but check times on Trenitalia first.

caffe della funicolare The cafe in the funicolare station is easy to overlook as you rush off to see the old town but it is well worth a visit - very friendly, a beautiful building and a good mix of people. They do great cocktails, a variety of beers and good coffee and food. The best bit is the outside terrace with tables which has a panoramic view over the lower town. Its a great place to go after a meal if you want to stay out but its also open during the day to.

caffe della funicolare Ots easy to miss this place as you jump off of the funicolare and head off to explore the old town. However it is a great place to go for some coktails or a beer after a meal. Its a beautiful building with a friendly atmosphere and a good mix of people. Its wowfactor however is a big terrace with panoramic views over the lower town. We also went during the day for coffee, which was good, and they serve food to.
