Magnificent Mediterranean

After a day of travel to finally arrive on the Amalfi coast in the early evening, the splendor of my surrounds did not hit me till we had been shown into our room (smaller than I expected from the price, but beautifully tiled )and the French windows to the little verandah were thrown open. There on our doorstep was the beautiful blue Mediterranean stretching out forever into an azure sky. You could not tell where one ended and the other began. After that, the size of the room scarcely seemed to matter.
The staff were wonderful, there is a lovely sun drenched enclosed courtyard to sit and read in the late morning or afternoon with pre dinner drinks. The restaurant has very passable fare though there is better and cheaper to be had nearby. The "included" buffet breakfast was very good.
It was too cold to swim, but the pool and surrounds looks very nice , albeit across the road. The location is just spectacular. There is something very special about staying in this former Franciscan convent.

Just Fabulous!

Fantastic location + hotel to match. Set in an old Covent perched on the cliffs all rooms have sea view. We were upgraded to a suite on arrival, then spent the rest of the day by the pool that runs into the sea. Food was great but with a 5 star price tag. The only negative point was that the coastal road the hotel sits on was extremely busy as it is the thoroughfare for Amalfi, therefore walking to the town center was playing with your life (just let the hotel park your car!). But it was worth it!!

I stayed at Hotel Luna in August and was very disapointed. The sevice is ok, but I expected more luxury from a four star hotel. I must say that the swiming pool was gorgeous but the room was not clean or nice. If you are expecting luxury, I do not recommend.

I refer to our recent visit to Amalfi and our booking as noted below. We travelled to Italy for our honeymoon and booked 7 nights at your hotel on 7th January 2004. We had a super time in Rome and Florence and were really looking forward to an enjoyable stay at your hotel. From our initial booking I felt the service was efficient and courteous. You kindly arranged a private transfer from Salerno train station.



However all this excitement faded away when we saw our hotel room. We were checked into room No 5 at your hotel and to say we were disappointed was an understatement. The room was so small, the bathroom was filthy dirty with black mill due on the walls. There wasn’t even a shower curtain. We had no difficulty paying €320 per night for our stay. But to think this was the standard of room we were offered. I find it hard to believe. I cannot understand how your hotel was awarded a 4star rating based on the room we were offered.



We requested a change of room and although the staff were very courteous there was nothing else available. We checked out the next day and the lady at reception apologised for the room she said she had nothing else available. My impression was that this was the worse room available and if so I cannot understand why we got this room when we booked your hotel 6 months prior to our arrival.



Thankfully we got a much better hotel and enjoyed the next 6 nights in Amalfi. We have a couple of friends travelling to Amalfi later this summer and we certainly will NOT recommend a stay at your hotel.

We felt like absolute royalty at the Luna Convento! The rooms were beautiful, clean, and comfortable. The service was top-notch - everyone from the front desk, wait staff, pool staff, to the hotel manager (who was our favorite). And the view was breathtaking! A couple of our favorite extras at the Luna were the courtyard and the pool. I would highly hightly recommend staying at the Luna Convento!

Strange inhabitants

We stayed here last year and I read with interest the other review about the infestation. We arrived after having driven from Rome in a Fiat Punto (never do that!) and were seriously disappointed with the room as it met none of the promises, suite with balcony, etc. I asked for another room as we were paying 170Euro a night and we were shown something even worse. Eventually after much complaining they begrudgingly showed us to a room right on the edge of the hotel next to the Old Chapel, with a sunken shower down steps from the main bathroom. It looked beautiful until you got close and saw the infestation of giant flying ants in there. We were pretty much left to fix it ourselves though we complained plenty. It was not nice. Worst experience of all however was my Husband's night time sighting of someone that loosely resembled myself closing the window in the room only to turn round in bed to find me still lying in it. He couldn't sleep with the light off again all holiday.

Our June 2004 stay at Luna- Wonderful!

Our stay at the Luna in mid-June 2004 was fantastic! It was more than we could have imagined even after all of our research. We found the staff to be attentive, the room to be clean and spacious with an incredible view, complete with a private balcony. (We stayed in room 42). Though some may view the room decor as "sparse" (no pictures on the walls, for example), I loved the clean lines and why would you want the walls to "compete" with such an incredible view? Also the floor was a beautiful red and yellow ceramic tile, and the ceiling a stenciled vine pattern. Perfect Mediterranean style, in my opinion. To reach our private balcony we climbed 6 or 7 steps (from within our room) out to a tiled balcony with a table and chairs. We could see the town of Amalfi, wonderful views of the water and the Amalfi coast line. Breakfast was included in our rate and it was a nice spread each morning with a large selection of meats and cheeses, tomatoes with olive oil, fresh fruits, pastries, muffins, wonderful coffee and fresh juices. All of this eaten on a balcony overlooking the water and Amalfi-- what a start to each morning! The Luna pool was a sight to see and you won't believe your eyes as you climb down the steps to reach it-- it is perched on a section carved out of a cliff. (Though I had plans to read and relax I never read more than a few pages b/c the view was so breathtaking!) Amalfi is a quaint little town and a very relaxed pace. It is filled with little shops, gelaterias and friendly people. A highlight of our trip was attending Mass at the Duomo-- what an incredible experience. Though we were content to stay put in Amalfi, exploring other towns along the Amalfi Coast would be easy with the clean and efficient SITA bus line (a stop is located right outside of the Luna entrance), by ferry, water taxi, or even by hiking if you are so inclined. We felt at home immediately in Amalfi and look forward to a return visit with our children using Amalfi as our base while we explore more of this region.

Not great any more

Both stays at Luna were on Christmas. The first (2001) was nice and the food was good. In 2002, we were extremely disappointed. the room was in bad shape, the food was served cold (they were too bust serving the tours to take any decent care of us) and the help was curt. All this and a huge bill!!! We've traveled to Italy on a few occassions and have been to many different types of places, but this one was a major disappointment. On the up-note, Christmas Eve in Almalfi is magical. It's very much what the holidays are supposed to be about.

A wonderful visit

We had a wonderful three day stay here last Autumn. The views from our room and the balcony (with table and chairs) were gorgeous.
The hotel still has some of its monastic origins (the stone, the layout). Central courtyard was pleasant place for conversation and drinks, but frankly it was hard to tear ourselves away from the coastal views we had from our room.

The food was fabulous (still trying to find Pasta Limoncello somewhere in my subsequent travels and home cooking). The staff were pleasant and attentive.

The pool is across the street (across the Amalfi Coast drive that is, so you have to leg it across pretty carefully and quickly); it's breathtaking, seemingly carved out of the coastal rock (you peer over the edge to the coast below, watching brave souls swim or dive in). However, note that the pool is not heated and it is cold! Worth a dip though.

You can quickly walk to the town of Amalfi which is quite close down the road, but again you are walking on the Amalfi coast drive with little room to spare, so it isn't a leisurely stroll.

We would definitely stay here again, maybe in combination with a stay in Ravello and a night or two on Capri.

We stayed at this hotel in April 04 for 6 nights - and had a fabulous time. The rooms, the food, the service and the view could not be faulted. We especially enjoyed our evening meals.

Let me add my voice to the happy chorus.
My wife and I just spent five nights in the previously recommended Room 19, and we found the hotel to be everything others said it would be. The Luna is in a fabulous location, the room had an amazing view, the food was great, and so was the service. We loved every minute of our stay. Oh sure, it could use a rug here or a painting there to make the place seem more sumptuous, but then the prices would go up, and the other great thing about the Luna is that it is a great value.

The Hotel Luna Convento was fantastic! We stayed during mid-November and thoroughly enjoyed the hotel, restaurant and cloister. We stayed in Room #15 which has the perfect view of the Mediterranean and a slice of Amalfi. The restaurant stayed open for us despite the fact that we were the only guests at the hotel our first night. Dinner was delicious and the dining room has an excellent view of Amalfi. This hotel and stay is a dream come true!

Top Local Tips for Amalfi

Getting Around 2 bits of advice: 1. Use the SITA - it is cheap, clean, efficient transportation which will take you to all of the small towns surrounding Amalfi. 2. Rent a scooter - we paid 65 Euros for a 2 seater scooter 1 day rental - it was fantastic and a MUST DO. See Nino travel agent in the main piazza - a little store on the left hand side if you are walking away from the coast.

getting from Amalfitan Coast to Pompei I definitely recommend a trip to Pompei. On the way, there is a route you can take over the mountains which offers extraordinary views, albeit takes long. There is also the coastal road from Sorrento but gets crowded in rush hour.

Atrani, must visit!!! Beautiful little town next to Amalfi is a must see for dinner and a walk!
