Historical Traveller Reviews of Ballyseede Castle Hotel

Great stay!

from Tahitifred
My partner and I had a wonderful 1-night stay at Ballyseede Castle on November 19th. It was the first of three castles we stayed at on our visit to Ireland. The other two castles were Waterford Castle and Ashford Castle - both larger, more expensive, but also very, very nice. Ballyseede however had the friendliest staff, coziest overall feeling and a wonderful Irish Wolfhound named Arthur. If you are looking for a posh "resort castle", definitely stay at the other two. If you want to stay at a castle that has lots of character, is very homey and feels like it could be haunted (especially on a cold, rainy night with the two gnarly, eerie trees out front), stay here. It's a great place to stay as a starting point for touring the Dingle Peninsula and/or the Ring of Kerry. Our room named "Rogers" (all rooms have names, not numbers) was very large and its curved front overlooked the front lawn (and eerie trees) from large windows.

We plan on returning to the "Green Isle" someday, and will without a doubt include the Ballyseede Castle again - only for a longer stay next time!!!

Absolutely Fabulous!!

I think some reviewers must have stayed in a different Ballyseede Castle to us! We had an AMAZING long weekend in October. We received a warm welcome by friendly staff, including an Irish Wolfhound, on a chilly October evening, which set the tone for what was to be an idyllic romantic weekend in County Kerry. The food was fanatastic, the staff couldn't have done enough to make our stay nicer and we had a huge bedroom with views over the grounds. The atmosphere in the Castle was very relaxed and there were plenty of quiet corners to head to, to read our books and sip red wine - perfect Saturday afternoon fodder! We loved it so much that we are going back over the New Years celebrations with a group of family and friends to rest our weary post Christmas bodies!

Ballyseede, what a blessing !

My sister and I were booked at Ballyseede Castle Hotel the first night of our stay in Ireland and I couldn't be more grateful. My sister was admitted to hospital the next day for a six day stay and therefore, the stay was quite extended. Marnie and her staff couldn't have taken better care of us if they had been family, Marnie even made it to the doctor's office before the ambulance when I called her. She and her staff went out of their way in so many ways to ensure our good care. We extended our stay for three more nights after my sister's release from the hospital to keep her close to her doctors, just in case and, again, Marnie and her staff were so warm and caring, our every comfort was considered and attended to. Marnie even took me touring one afternoon to ensure I'd see a bit of Ireland instead of just the hospital !!

The castle itself is beautiful, the rooms are furnished extremely well, clean and spacious, and the castle sits on expansive, beautifully groomed grounds. The peacefullness we immediatly felt coming up the drive, was echoed by a number of the other guests with whom we spoke. The food both in the bar and the dinning room was excellent and the chef even made the soup of the day at my sister's request the day she was released from the hospital.

The castle is also very convient to touring the Dingle Peninsula, the Ring of Kerry, and Tralee. The staff even showed us short cuts and extras to see on our driving tours. And when our touring day was over, we were so grafefull for this peacefull place and its warm, caring people to "come home to".

I will definetely be returning to Ballyseede upon return to Ireland and would, and have, recommended it and its staff to others as a beautifully peaceful, friendly and excellent place to stay.

just fab...worth a visit

from travelmad999
I stayed here with my wife for 2 nights, and after coming onto write about it, I am shocked at the last few reviews??? Staff were great, food fab, rooms huge and very clean.
It is a castle, so the heating is medium, but I have stayed in many castles and all are the same in winter..bring a jumper!!
It is a real castle, and a real gem. It was very good value for what you get.

I would..will go again. I think the last reviews must have thought they were going to stay in a 5 star hotel or something??

do not stay here

from bigdsbar
Please save yourself time, money, and not stay here. this "castle" is so neglected that they should be embarrased to charge people to stay here. its creepy, dirty, and like a previous reviewer noted...the staff leaves at night. how professional is that? there is mold everywhere...when i tried to sleep i smelled it all night. the dogs are friendly, however...they did bark all night. we were so frustrated that i skipped my morning shower just to get out of there. my sister had blood on her pillow case...i am telling you, do not stay here.

Watch Your charges

from Hockey14
The hotel was lovely . The food was delicious. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

We were overcharged and the staff on duty was not willing to make changes. We had proof of payment.

hated our 2 days

from jomack
Unfortunately we did not enjoy our stay at the castle. our room was large, but there was wood rot on the window allowing a gaping hole between the glass and wood, so that the wind and rain came into the room. the shower did not work and when I called down to the desk, their response was that they couldn't do anything about it. hair dryer shorted out, same horrible breakfast every day. Very unprofessional staff and no one offered to carry or assist with our luggage to our room. Upon checkout, they attempted to charge us for a dinner we did not have. absolutely no amenities which you would expect at a place like this for such an expense. I do not recommend anyone waste their money and time here.

Perfect Castle Stay

from Felesina
I can't believe the last few reviews for this hotel. What were these people expecting?

Anyway, we loved this hotel. I was looking for a castle stay that wouldn't break the budget and Ballyseede fit the bill nicely. Most castle hotels were triple the cost, if you could get a room for four people.

You drive up a long driveway through a forest to arrive at this hotel. It feels very secluded and it felt like we had the whole place to ourselves, even though the hotel was almost full. We were greeted by the two dogs who belong to the castle which my kids played with all weekend. The staff was great about showing my son the "haunted" room and telling the story behind it. The rooms were very large and had a nice view of the grounds. It's true the paint was peeling in a few places, but it just added to the character of the place. We had dinner in the dining room, which was excellent. I would reccommend this place to anyone who can't afford to spend $US700 a night on Waterford or Dromoland Castle.

Never Again

from kcj1314
We had a 10 day vacation that led us through most of Ireland and stayed at various castles and hotels along the way. This was by far the worst of all of our accomadations. The castle itself has a long history and is a very neat structure...but thats about all of the positive things i can say about the ballyseede castle. It is very dirty and run down. the staff is friendly but not professional by any means. they have two dogs on the premise that howled all night long. i tried calling the desk to see if they could stop the noise and found out that they had left for the night. this to me was unacceptable. the rooms are old, the bathrooms are dirty. when we sat to have breakfast in the morning, the tables looked as though they hadn't been cleaned in a week. we had six rooms here and two of them were so bad that we didn't even use them. This place was bad enough that we are contacting our travel agent for some type of refund.

Ballyseede in Tralee

from deacon1
Stayed one night at the Ballyseede. The pluses: Castle did have a lot of history, was well decorated and the grounds kept well. The rooms were of varying sizes. Ours was quite large, clean with good size bathroom. The pub was quaint and well decorated. We did not dine at the castle as we decided to eat in town. We did look at the menu which seemed a bit pricey. The negatives: The staff although pleasant was not as professional as in other places. The dining room was not vaccumed in the morning which was quite noticeable. Breakfast was fair at best.Overall not a bad castle stay, but given our choice, the Glin Castle is far and away superior.
