The room I was initially shown to had not been cleaned after the previous guest. The bed was unmade and the room a mess, including the remains of a meal. When I complained, my room was changed. The following morning, I was dismayed to discover, firstly, that my breakfast was not included in the price, when I had been told upon check-in that it was and secondly, that the hotel operates on the rip-off price structure which I thought was on the way out in Ireland; namely, €5 for tea and toast, €8 if you want anything from the buffet. For the price charged for this hotel, it is terrible, terrible value for money. Its only selling point is the proximity to the airport - it is the only hotel in the grounds. I would never stay there is not for that reason.

Our overnight stay at the hotel was exactly what we needed before we left Ireland for our return to America the following morning. The hotel was beautiful, our room was spacious and clean, the food in the restaurant was excellent and an after dinner drink at the bar ended our wonderful stay. The rental car place and the airport were right across from the hotel, which made it doubly convenient. It couldn't have been easier.

Take the Great out of this hotel

My husband and I stayed in this hotel as we had an early flight -- quite honestly -we should have stayed at the Radisson down the road.
However, we only paid 79eurofor a double room. We got a free upgrade to an executive room but this was as far from executive as could possibly be -- I definately would not have paid for it.
Very basic, old and definately in need of modernisation . We have a toddler so have to keep the bathroom door closed at all times but the door kept sticking tight so was difficult to open.
We ate in the bar -- we ordered two steaks which were 25euros each and were the toughest pieces of meat we ever had AND we had to request steak knives.
We found the bar staff to be rude and unhelpful.
I would not stay in this hotel again and I would not recomment it to anyone.
On checking out the following morning we had to wait for the receptionist to finish his cigarette outside the main entrance before we could check out !
There are other hotels around the airport which are just a short drive away -- USE THEM.
Such a pity, as I stay with GSH hotels a lot with work and they are all so plush -- shame abou this one.

Loved the Great Southern Hotel, Shannon

I absolutely adored this hotel. I have stayed in many 5 star hotels throughout the world but have never met such friendly staff as in the Great Southern Hotel in Shannon.
I had room service and the food to be very good. Kathleen is a true gem and excellent at her job.
The rooms are very spacious and spotless.
The airport is just across the street - ideal location if going or coming from a flight. I was there on business and was a little concerned about the noise level - what noise level!! I had the best nights sleep.
Don't miss out on this hotel. For a 3 star it is excellent.

Very disappointing

Stayed in this hotel as we had booked an early morning flight from Shannon. I was looking forward to the stay as we had booked an "Executive" room and while i didnt know exactly what this meant, i had high expectations - especially as I had stayed in other Great Southern Hotels and was very impressed. However the room was a real let down, it was basic, dated and nothing special at all. the only thing this hotel has going for it is the location..which is in the grounds of the airport.

We stayed at the Great Southern at the Shannon Airport after our 12+ hour flight to Ireland from the US. It's very convenient since it's practically in the parking lot of the airport, but the hotel isn't that great. The other Great Southern Hotels we stayed in throughout Ireland were great, but this one was really sub-standard compared to the others. The beds were very uncomfortable and the food was terrible, but the rooms were clean. It's an o.k. place for weary travelers to lay their heads and get their bearings before exploring the country. Now that I know how close Bunratty and Newmarket on Fergus is to the airport, I doubt we will stay here again.

I stayed at the Great Southern Hotel at Shannon Airport for one night, October 8, 2005, as I needed to be on a flight the next morning to return to the US. I was given one of the "executive" rooms and it was clean, decorated in a simple but nice fashion and had two twin beds (I would have preferred a double bed but for one night it's no big deal). The room had a TV, coffee/tea maker. an iron/ironing board, and a big closet as well. The bathroom was nicely tiled and seemed to be fine... until the next morning when it was chilly and the hot water didn't work in the tub - that was not good! This hotel is okay for one night, but it's not an amazing hotel. The best thing about staying here, as the other reviews mentioned, is that the hotel is directly across from departures terminal at Shannon Airport. There is a price to pay for convenience. With that said, I personally found the staff to be very helpful and accommodating, and the hotel bar had a nice fun crowd that night. I don't think I would stay at the Great Southern Hotel at Shannon Airport again in the future. With my 20/20 hindsight, I might consider staying at Ashgrove House in Bunratty or another nice place close enough to the airport where I could take a taxi in the morning.

Due to a layover I stayed at the Great Southern Hotel in Shannon. For a four star hotel the bed was worn out, the food was average at best, the cost was way out of line for what you can get anywhere else in the world for the money, and the staff was not friendly at all. For a company that is supposedly trying to change it's image, it has a long way to go.

Good location, but yukky rooms

My husband and I stayed at the Great Southern Hotel as we had a very early morning flight out of Shannon Airport and it is literally a walk across the street to the terminal. But the room was nasty, the shower didn't drain so you were calf deep in water while you showered. The room smelled bad too. The TV didn't work properly. It served the purpose of getting us to the airport on time, but don't expect a great hotel experience.

This hotel is literally right across the parking lot (EASY walking distance) from the small Shannon airport. The rooms are large, clean, and comfortable, and there's a screen in the hotel lobby where you can see arrival and departure information for all flights. So convenient!

Love the Shannon Great Southern

I would recommend the Shannon Great Southern to anyone traveling to Shannon, in fact I do. I travel to Ireland every year and have stayed there on my arrival and my departure. I have stayed at the Great Southern in Dublin also, and let me tell you the staff is much friendlier in Shannon. I personally have never had any problems there. The staff is always fantastic and helpful. Breakfast is always great, and I have eaten dinner there on many occasions. I think if you go anywhere with a negative attitude you will find all the negative aspects of anything. I love the Shannon Great Southern so much, that I plan to spend most of my vacation there in July of 2005.

PS On my last visit my Aunt was my traveling companion. She arrrived in Shannon sick and the staff was extremely helpful in making her comfotable and providing her with a hot water bottle. She is kinda of a negative person and she loved it there.

the only choice at Shannon airport

Stayed at the GSH at Shannon since I was arriving late into Shannon and had to pick up family arriving early the next morning. What I would say is the hotel was minimally acceptable for a one night stay. I would not have wanted to stay longer and at Euro 90, it was below average value. But since it is the only hotel with a few miles of the airport, they have a captive market. I would not say it is a good hotel and I am very surprised by the variance in published reviews -- it is far from a fine hotel.

Stay there only if you need to is my recommendation. Ireland has a lot better accomodations.

Top Local Tips for Shannon

Buses There is good service to and from Shannon airport from the forlorn Limerick bus station which is really a series of parking slots just outside the train station. But the trip can take anywhere between 15 mn and 40 mn, depending on the route (direct or local), I guess, or the time of day.

MacNamara's Bar in Bunratty for evening entertainment If you're in Shannon for an evening, be sure to go to Bunratty Castle and Heritage Village. And if you want real Irish music, go to Mac's bar in the village after hours. Though it is a tourist destination, it is more real than the local pubs.
