Never again!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed in Dromoland in July of this year.

I was so looking forward to my stay at Dromoland after reading the previous reviews. What a disappointment!
Upon check in I as told my reservation was lost. It took 15 minuted for it to be found and I received no apology.
I checked into my room and was disappointed further. It was tiny and as a previous reviewer mentioned there was an very strong musty smell. The bathroom was poky but there was lots of supplies, not your usual 1 bar of soap, 1 bottle of shampoo and 1 bottle of shower gel. My robe however was quite worn and had seen better days.
The room was clean enough but at those prices I was not expecting to find dust under the bed, and yes I did check when I dropped an earring.

The grounds are wonderful and you could quite easily spend all day just walking.

On checking out the next day I noticed a telephone charge when I had not made any calls. Again, another drama carried on behind reception with the receptionists talking very loudly about me "creating a fuss".
It was resolved this time with a half hearted apology.

I will not be returning to Dromoland in future. It's sister hotel, Ashford, has never been a let down, this trip certainly was.

A castle for those who like to be treated like serfs

from TheGreatWhiteWay
What a tremendous disappointment. After a wonderful stay at Ashford Castle, we arrived at Dromoland and encountered some of the worst staff I have ever seen at a supposed 5 star hotel. We did not receive the rooms we had requested and the staff acted completely put upon to try and resolve the situation. We eventually escalated to the Manager on Duty who did not seem to care much either. It was at this point that we noticed that our car was left open by the porter and our luggage was unceremoniously dumped on the sidewalk (unattended by anyone for 30 minutes.) It actually amazed me at the lack of any concern for their guests.

The hotel itself was 'ok' but had absolutely no feel of being a castle. The rooms had little character or charm. After reading the other reviews, I can't help but feel that the hotel has certainly changed and has a dire need for more staff training. We felt that we were at one of those bus tour factory hotels.

Save your money and stay elsewhere.

(Oh and lots of stairs so this hotel is completely inappropriate for anyone who is even slightly disabled or even out of shape!)

Biggest disappointment of trip

from A TripAdvisor Member
Honestly, after everything I had read, we were so excited to stay here. It ended up being the biggest disappointment of the trip. We paid extra for a "suite" which was a small room with a love seat thrown in. The room smelled musty and was not that impressive. When we asked to see other "suites" we were told that this was the nicest suite in the hotel. On our last night there, I was injured when a lamp in the room short circuited and burned me. Though the staff tried to be helpful and the service was good, overall, this hotel is extremely overrated. The breakfast buffet was nice, but otherwise, the food was substandard. Honestly, do not waste your money to stay here. We stayed at much nicer, far less costly places on our trip. This might be impressive to you if you stay here for your last night in Ireland after having stayed in B&B's or cheap hotels. Nothing to write home about.

s top hotels

from MarkSAllen
An absolutely fantastic hotel, with an attention to detail second to none. Magnificent setting, outstanding quality rooms, tremendous ambience, and great service. The food was probably the best I have tasted in 10 years of international travel, with contrasting tastes and textures used to full effect.

Truly one of the world's top hotels!

Had a wonderful time.

from ironranger
Stay for just one night, June 20th for my daughters 18th birthday. The service was excellent our stay was fantastic. The 5 star restaurant deserves every star....well worth the $700 per night. The grounds and golf course are awesome. If you have the money the Castle is not to be missed. If for only one night. Which is all I could afford. Royalty for a day!!!

Romantic and beautiful

from itsjusttravel
I have now stayed at Dromoland Castle twice. The first time was with girlfriends in 2001 and most recently, November 2003 with my husband. The first time we stayed just one night and the second time, two nights. I wish I could have stayed for a week. We received a complimentary upgrade on our second trip and the room was beautiful! The Earl of Thromond dining room( I think that's how it's spelled) was delicious and elegant. We had a tour of the wine cellar, it was so much fun! The grounds are beautiful. The staff is so professional and curteous. I felt very pampered! I can't imagine going to Ireland without including a stay at Dromoland Castle.

The cottages are wonderful

from A TripAdvisor Member
The cottages on the property are private and wonderful. Location is great for exploring. The castle was lovely but a tourist trap. The staff is so well trained I fear we never saw a "real" Irishman/woman. Furnishings need updating. Overpriced and pretentious.

t do better than Dromoland Castle

from A TripAdvisor Member
My husband and I stayed at Dromoland Castle last year to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary. All I can say is it is beautiful. The suite we were given was in one of the towers, and we had breakfast served to us every morning with the papers. The staff were extremely courteous and polite. Being from Ireland everything is extremely expensive anyway, so we were nicely surprised when the meal we got in the dining room was gorgeous, and very reasonable. We will definetly stay here again. For the whole weekend we never left the hotel. We went for beauty treatments every day, lunch in the golf club, walked around the grounds. It was totally relaxing.

Wonderful First Night

from roxian
My mother and I stayed at Dromoland on the first night of our 7 day trip on March 31, 2004. It was a wonderful place to spend our first evening (especially after a sleepless overnight flight!). The rooms were very nice (and I am very picky about my accomodations). The bathrooms were spacious and also very nice. The grounds were absolutely beautiful. The golf course was immaculate (and very busy). The staff was superb. Everyone there was extremely friendly and helpful. I did feel sorry for the "butler", who had to carry our very heavy bags up to our room. After seeing the sweat on his brow, it then occured to me that there were no elevators in the castle! We took a couple long strolls that evening, and I have to say, this is the most peacful place I have ever been. I really wish we could have stayed here longer, and next time in Ireland I will include Dromoland in my itinerary.

great for my teenage sons

from A TripAdvisor Member
Our last night after a 2-week trip in Ireland was at Dromoland Castle.
My husband and I had one room, and our 2 teenage sons another. The staff was wonderful to the boys -- arranging for fishing, movies, tours and stories about the castle. They had a great day away from us and we had a great day of privacy! It was a win-win! They felt quite grown-up.

Top Local Tips for Newmarket On Fergus

good pub food at Hunters Lodge Excellent pub lunch & dinner on 2 visits, once as we were arriving at Shannon airport and once as we were leaving. Pleasant pub in center of town, cheerful bartender, chatty locals who were fun to talk with. We had fish & chips, roast beef special, liver & onions special. Came with great sides of fluffy potatoes & veggies & salads.

By the way Only go if it is a function. The banquet facilities are OK

Walk around and explore the landscape Walk up behind the gazebo to see hundreds of pheasant in the woods running wild but staying near the feeders! Dont forget to check out the walled garden and take a row boat out on the lake.
