run down, staff not vey friendly or efficient

from L0rraine
booked online as directed by hotel website in order to avail of special offer. Then told we couldn't have dinner as described by offer. no hot water for showers in the evening. reception not helpful or friendly. decor old fashioned and shabby. leisure centre is by far best part of hotel - new, clean and very good facilities.

Perfect Setting

from perfectsetting
We stayed in October 2006 - to say the hotel is set on a perfect setting is an understatement, lovely gardens and beautiful walk way to the Lough it was just perfect.
As we were celebrating a special occasion we got upgraded to the Presidential Suite - the staff were very welcoming & made a great fuss of us & made the effort to know our names by the end of our stay - which I have to say is very rare in hotels nowadays because you feel sometimes in a hotel you are just on a conveyor belt - great personal touch in this hotel.
I have to admit, I wasn't keen on the walk up to the Suite, I felt that the corridors were a little worst for ware as far as a lick of paint and some carpet work go but thankfully it did stop at the door to the bedroom - the bedroom was really nicely decorated, very clean and very spacious - bathroom was spotless and very spacious also.
We had a lovely relaxing time in the bar, perfectly situated over looking the gardens and Lough (the outside of the windows in the bar area could have done with a clean though considering all you do when you are there is admire the view!!). We made great use of the facilities, spa area and pool, all very nice and very relaxing.
The only thing I would have to have a little moan about would be Breakfast!!! We went down for breakfast & the conservatory area was full. We were put in the over flow on the right of the restaurant (steps up to it) - not one member of staff came near us while we sat waiting for our order to be taken we had to call a waitress 3 times to eventually get our order taken and then when we went into the buffet table there was nothing left and staff were too busy to restock it, plus the area was packed and you couldn't walk around the table because of the volume of people in there and a trolley for loading dirty delph on to was just in the door. My personal opinion, if the hotel is full (which it was), they should just use the restaurant for breakfast and use the conservatory for the buffet table. In my opinion, Breakfast was the only thing that let a lovely ,clean, relaxing hotel down. We will stay again because of the cleanliness, friendliness and perfect setting of the hotel.

Try and get one of the executive suites

from MrBusby
Stayed here for four nights and througherly enjoyed my time. The Room 451 was spacious and the bathroom was in a way too large especially for one person. Breakfast were served on time and by helpful friendly staff.
The spa and gym did get busy as many locals use it too but it you arrrive first thing or after 6pm you can have the pool to yourself.

Would stay again for any other trips to Mullingar.

Good hotel bad food

from trayloua
The hotel itself is set in a beautiful part of the countryside with a lovely stroll down to the lakes edge. The staff were very friendly and helpful especially a small dark haired waitress in the restaurant who found out it was my birthday and got the chef to make me a very special dessert. The rooms were quite large with a double and single bed, which were extremely comfortable. The view from our room was fabulous we could see the forest, lake and gardens of the hotel. I also sampled some of the spa treatments (stone aroma therapy massage) highly recommended!!! The staff in the spa were lovely and really made you feel relaxed. My appointed spa staff member was Chantelle who was not only very professional and friendly but was also very good and made me feel very relaxed for the day! Now the bad part... the food... we had booked in for a 4 course meal. Firstly as I only eat chicken and do not eat red meat or fish, I was disappointed to find that the only chicken dish on the menu was chicken wrapped in parma ham with salmon stuffing! I requested plain chicken which was no problem but when it came it was very dry and tasted like it had been left all day under a light, despite this I continued on with the food and enjoyed it for the most part but was not feeling well at all about an hour later and ended up very ill for the rest of the night. The following morning we headed to breakfast, they had not very many options for people who do not eat a "fry up", I noticed some empty boxes of cereal about but when I asked for some cereal I was told there were none left. Consequently I got toast and tea which were cold when placed on our table so I requested a fresh batch which hit the spot in the end!!! Would I recommend this hotel, yes but I would suggest room only or possibly B&B provided you are willing to be at breakfast before 9am but I would not recommend dinner, in fairness to the chef I do sympathize as they did have two weddings running in conjunction with the restaurant but coming myself from a hotel background this is still no excuse for bad food!

We stayed here for one night on the thursday before the august bank holiday weekend.Had a shaky start with the booking process by a receptionist who shall remain nameless who was extreamly rude. I had asked for an email confirmation and was told 'they didnt do that'. That was a new one on me however i did ring the following week to confirm the booking and a different receptionist who I must say was very helpful could not find record of booking but there was availability for the night, booked it for me and there was an email confirmation waiting for me next morning.
The hotel was fine, rooms were very spacious and clean but I do agree the hallways do need a bit of freshning up. Breakfast was fine, typical hotel breakfast. The gym was brilliant, plenty of all the machines and pool and jacuzzi were great.
I didn't encounter the rude receptionist during our short stay and all other staff were fine and helpfull when we needed something.
I do think it wasn't such great value for money @160 for 1 night for 2 adults b+b but this is ireland, land of expense.
Would i stay here again? possibly but I would arrive early on day of arrival to make full use of facilities there and the lovely surroundings on the lake to get value for my money

Great craic, if you like weddings.

from DetoxRetox
We stayed for 2 nights for a family wedding. The triple room we had was spacious with a large bathroom. The room and facilities were clean, although there is scope for minor repairs throughout the hotel (a lick of paint here and there, nothing major). This hotel looks to be a regular host of many weddings, there were 5 during our stay alone. This creates a huge number visitors with the parties going on into the early hours of the morning.
Breakfast can be a hit and miss affair, officially it only is served until 10.30, but with the celebrations running late there is a tendency for this to be extended to 11or later! Food will not win any awards, but acceptable.
We stayed for evening dinner once, and found it to be good value, if a little uninspired.
Some rooms have a view of the lake, ours did not. If this is what you want, make it clear during booking! We used the pool and found it to be a good size. The best time to go, not surprisingly, is before breakfast, when you will have the place to yourself.
Overall this is a very, very busy hotel, not for the faint hearted.

First Class service by friendly staff

I spent four very happy days at the Hotel as part of a Golfing group of 12 from North "Wales. Following the March 2006 report we were a bit concerned. However from arrival we were greeted by excellent service by friendly and helpful staff. The accommodation was very comfortable and all meals were of a very high standard especially the evening set meal comprising four courses at a price of 15 euros which was excellent value. All members of the group are agreed that we would recommend this Hotel for future visitors.

Comfort, with views of the lake

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel is a nice combination of old and modern. The old house has been incorporated in the new. Conveniently situated about three miles from Mullingar, local side roads by the lake were quiet, level and good for walking when we were there in early April, 2006. The south facing rooms have fine views of the lake (Lough Ennel) and countryside. The food was very good (contrary to the findings of another reviewer), and one could eat a huge breakfast from the combination of buffet and cooked food. Staff were friendly and helpful. My only, small, reservation is that my artist daughter won't make a living from the sale of prints to the hotel - of the sixteen pictures on the walls between my room and the ground floor, eight were of "boat near lake" and the other eight were of "trees near lake".

Friendly and very comfortable

from A TripAdvisor Member
Having seen a previous review of the food here I was slow to make reservation. I was more than pleasantly surprised. We had a beautiful meal in pleasant surroundings, served with a smile and with finesse. I could only speak well of the place. I would certainly recommend the place from several points of view.

Awful Awful Food

from A TripAdvisor Member
We spent two nights in this hotel. While the hotel was in a lovely lakeside location I would not recommend it. When we arrived we had asked for a smoking room they put us in a non-smoking room. We then moved rooms into a junior suite which was very old fashioned but adequate. The main problem with this place is the food which is some of the worst food I have ever eaten, even breakfast was very poor. Do not eat here.

Top Local Tips for Mullingar

Oscars By far the finest restaurant in mullingar . Well prepared fresh local produce. Every thing tastes exceptional try the fillet steak with the mushrooms and salad to die for. The hot chocolade fudge dessert is undescribably fantastic. The service is excellent too.

travel strongly advise to rent a car if you are a tourist as there are a lot of dual carriageways and motorways in and out of Mullingar

spain great outdoor life lake walks
