What has happened to the Grand

from A TripAdvisor Member
Having stayed in the grand in Malahide several times. I rebooked for two double rooms for a weekend break with Friends. The rooms themselves where lovely but the reception staff left a lot to be desired. Everything seemed to be a problem, in particular the staff overall in the hotel gave the impression they did not want to be there.

Had the same experience with the "No Water" incident once, Thank god I missed it.

Going back in August

from shelly-ann
Stayed in this hotel for two nights bed, breakfast and one evening meal for 120 euros per person. Arrived Sun afternoon, disappointed that our room was not ready. Told to come back to reception at 5pm, which was an hour away. Went to bar to have a cup of tea, told there was no water as Finglas county council had water off. Decided then we would go for a walk, but it was lashing rain! Thought things had got off to a bad start. Went back to bar for a mineral water and they said water was back on. Had lovely homemade scones, biscuits and tea which was on the house due to our room not been ready.
We went back to reception at 5pm, told room would be another 45 mins. At this stage all we wanted was to get settled into our room, we sat at the reception and ten mins later we were called.
the room was lovely, very clean, overall we were happy with it. Had dinner in the restaurant that evening, very good indeed, I work in hospitality and I really could not complain about anything. The breakfast was suberb, the staff were pleasant. On our 2nd night we had bar food, which was even nicer than the restaurant and very reasonably priced. The only thing that was a small bit annoying was the fact that the waitress was perhaps abit over attentive, and kept coming over to the table every five mins or so and asking did we wnat anymore drink. I found this a small bit obtrustive, as I would ask if I did.
We have booked to return in August. Overall I would give this hotel a good 8 out of ten for customer care.

A Grand Experience!

from jaimewvu
My husband and I absolutely loved The Grand!!! We had an Sea View room, overlooking the boats in the harbour, and it was stunning. The room was clean and well-kept. The bathroom was large (with the best shower head I've ever used). The Leisure Center was very, very nice. The bar on the main floor was large, comfortable and worth a visit for a pint or two. The restaurant was gorgeous, with a vast buffet of varied foods as well as a hot choice from the menu. The hotel is very close to the DART station, as well as the bus stop. The nice folks at the reception desk are very accomodating and went out of their way to help us on a number of occasions. Malahide was great -- we will most definitely come here the next time we are in the country!! Most recommended!

I don't have any idea why some of these reviewers are saying bad things about The Grand -- it isn't run down in the least. It was built in the 1830's, and if you aren't a fan of this type of place then stay in a cookie-cutter hotel. There are plenty of international chains just south of Malahide. We'll stick to The Grand. We can stay in a Hilton any time.

Avoid Room 125

from jjessie2
Last Weekend I had the pleasure of attending a wedding in the Grand Hotel, Malahide. The Wedding food was very nice, as was breakfast the next day & I cannot fault the service - the function was in a very nice room overlooking the bay. However, I ended up sharing a room with my friend, a bridesmaid. The room had been booked as a double by the bride so we had to take it as booked. I don't think I have ever stayed in such a small, dark, horrible room in any hotel in Ireland. There was no natural daylight as the room was in a corner with a short of chute behind it. I reckon it couldn't have been more than 10 x 12 or 14 feet. The bathroom only had a shower. We decided to ask for another room but of course they were full etc etc. and all she could say was sorry. When we were checking out we were asked how was everything & again we said the room was not up to standard etc. but only a pathetic sorry was offerd again. As the bride booked the room we did not want to make too much fuss.
Is the Grand advertising it as a 4 star? You will get a much bigger and more comfortable room in the Airport Hilton a few miles back towards town. I can't see how it can be acceptable to offer a room of this size. I guess in an old building they knocked up partition walls and fitted in as many rooms as they could.
Perhaps we were just unlucky, but at €165 (and that was a discounted wedding rate) I think a customer should get more than a pathetic sorry if they complain. Overall we had a great night though however on the Sunday the bar does not open until 12.30. I was told I could get service in the lobby - well by whom, nobody around to offer service.
So, If you end up with Room 125 in the Grand perhaps you should ask to see it before you agree to accept it. And no, we are not too fussy, my friend usually if very laid back!

What a Lovely experience

from DavidMcCartney
We had booked a week-end break with my brother-in-law and his wife coming over from Runcorn to join us and just have had a wonderful experience. The rooms were very well furnished and very clean. Even the chocolates in the room were replaced on the second day! We ate in the hotel on the Friday night and could not fault the food or the service. The staff were from all over the world it seemed but all very friendly and attentive without being intrusive. On the Sunday morning when I went out to start the car I discovered I had stupidly left the DVD on in the car and the battery was dead, and I mean dead! One of the receptionists offered to help me start my car with hers and her jumpleads, it was absolutely pouring down but she insisted. Now that is what I call going the extra mile, That is irish hospitality in it's truest sense. The Leisure Centre was great too, we used the gym twice and the pool twice, all very clean and fresh, could not fault it. Malahide is a lovely place with some great restaurants and very handy to Dublin by Dart. 14 euro for four return and only 20 minutes, you have the best of both worlds. The view out to the Marina and and across the water is very refreshing and it is worth asking for a room with a seaview. We will most definitely be returning a another week-end of relaxation and superb hospitality.

lovely hotel

from benji55
Just back from the grand hotel.rooms were great ask for a seaview and u might get a free upgrade as I did.food was okay but for great food eat at cruzzos which is a five minute walk from hotel it was the best meal i have had in ages little bit expencive but worth every penny. you would need to book in advance.there is building work going on at the hotel but it was not noisy. The pool and spa area was great if you go after 7 you could almost have the pool to yourself as children have to leave then.

Malahide a lovely little town

from Maxine002
Have just came back from a 2 night stay at the Grand Hotel, Malahide. I went with my husband, eight year old daughter, one year old son and mother. First impressions of the hotel was that it was a bit tired looking, some parts could definitely do with a lick of paint. Check in was suppose to be 3pm but our rooms were still not ready. Eventually we got our rooms although there was a bit of a mix up, cots and a camper bed were put into them even though we had told them we were bringing our own travel cot. However a maid soon remedied that and removed the cots and camper bed. The hotel is well placed for touring the surrounding area. A lovely beach is across the road, we are looking forward to returning in the warmer weather to explore this. The town itself has a few gift shops and boutiques. Restaurants are plentiful, Italian, Chinese, Greek etc We went to Malahide Castle which has lovely grounds, plenty of grassy areas for the kids to run about and a brilliant playground. Will definitely visit it again when all the attractions are open.
All in all we would return to Malahide again but not sure if we would bother going back to the Grand, maybe a little B&B or something. We went on a bed and breakfast basis and bought 2 meals in the hotel, (bar meal and carvery)not impressed! Better to go bed and breakfast and eat out in the many restaurants.
Also there is a lot of building work going on at the hotel and it is a bit of a trek to the swimming pool.

Hotel - Dire Food

from lit102
We stayed here for 2 nights in Feb, having gone down it see Ireland V Wales in the 6 nations. Hotel itself as usual was excellent, despite the building work going on. We got a free upgrade to an Executive suite, room fantastic, if a little hard find initially. First night we ate in a resturant called Cruzo's had to book in advance and boy was it worth it. Food to die for, unfortunately same could not be said for hotel resturant, food would have made you die! Appalling was not the word to describe it. Starters were fine, after a 30/35 minute wait our mains of 3 medium/well steaks arrived and they weren't just well done they were cremated. 2inch thick steak that literally had 1/2 inch of meat that was vaguely recognisable. So bad we could our wine thrown in for free. I hate to say it cause this is one of my favourite hotels (my 5th visit) but I seriously doubt I will ever eat in it again.

As I have said there is a huge extension going on at the minute, I just hope that bigger doesn't mean worse. And I hope they will improve the size of their bar it is struggling to cope at present.

However I will give the Grand the benefit of the doubt and visit again, i'll just make sure we book Cruzo's well in advance

Fantastic Weekend Break!

from Sineaid
We have just returned from a fantastic weekend break at the Grand Hotel, staff were all very pleasant and helpful, the food, both the breakfast and evening meals in the Colonnade restaurant were excellent with a very efficient service.
The Arena Pool was a great size and the Gym was also very good. The bedroom which was spotlessly clean was very spacious and very nicely decorated.
We will definitely be back!
