Myself and my husband stayed at the Clanree during our trip to Ireland, along with another couple. The standard of accommodation was very poor, our room was really shabby. I would actually go as far as to say the customer service at the hotel was the worst both me and my husband have ever experienced. The staff and management were rude and clearly have no clue how to run an hotel, our food was substandard and upon complaining we were met with a very negative response.
I would urge people to look elsewhere for accommdation in Donegal as we were so let down by this "hotel".

I was on business nearby and stayed here for one night due to the location. Do not be fooled like I was by the pictures on their website, hotel looks nothing like it in reality. Guest rooms were a joke, no satellite tv as promised and as for business facilities...well they didn't exist. Staff weren't much better either. I'm not a hard person to please but if you're a business traveller, keep on looking!

I stayed here with a group of 18, they included members of my family & some friends. I have to commend the staff here, We were all given a true Irish Welcome (not something you always get)by all the staff,from the minute we arrived until we left, we stayed for 3 days & would without doubt return to the Clanree when visiting Lettereknny Again...

I would honestly say that the first 2 reviews on this page must have been staying in a different hotel from me. This place was excellent in all ways. The food was delicious every time and I mean delicious. Parking great, rooms great, service great. The staff were excellent, friendly and helpful. They couldn't do enough to please each and every individual. If you don't choose Clanree because of these 2 first comments, you would be off your head and would be missing out on one of the best places to stay and possibly come back to!!!!!!!!!!!

Terrible attitude

After spending the whole day at a wedding here, I have never seen or experienced such an unprofessional establshment. Being a manager in the hospitality industry I have a good eye for staff and the small detail. Yes the place looks great and was set up very weel, but this was totoally spoilt by having to wait for a drink at the bar for over ten minutes every time, being snarled at by the receptionist when all the payphones were out of order, having to ask for broken glass to cleaned from the dance floor over 5 times, a meal which could have come out of a microwave, and finally being forcefully man handled by a fellow with a bow tie on when I decided to go outside for a walk, who in turned called me the w word and told me to f@@k off home, only to be supported by the actual so called manager! Amazing!! This staff jsut want your money and then will just literally throw you out the door!!!

Your limit of two people per room - is that just for Americans? You forced my family (3 people) to split up and take two rooms to the tune of $250 US for one night (on a Monday) for an average room!!! No other hotel the whole week of vacation required two rooms and the average rate per night from Galway, Clifden, to Donegal Town was between $79-$140 Euro for the three of us including breakfast. But no, not at Clantree - two rooms!!! I'll not soon forget this stay and would not recommend your hotel to any Boston friends and relatives.

Great for a party and the craic

There must have been around 30+ of us staying at the Clanree on the 16/17th April 2005. I was there with my football club team mates plus some our ex-players and some of our directors.
I haven't got a complaint about this wonderful hotel - not that I can remember much.
Me and my team-mate, big John - and our other friend, charlie had a brilliant time.
John and me were doing a karioke on the stage with the locals and giving it big licks for the local freedom fighters - up the 'ra we shouted all night.
Some of the older and ex-players and directors seemed to know more songs about the Freedom fighters than I did - but I'm young and have got time on my side.
So if it's the craic you're looking for, and you want a great tim(e), you must visit the Clanree Hotel in Letterkenny.

Very Noisy

We stayed at this hotel on a Sat night and as we had driven over 400 miles to get there we were exhausted. The hotel looks lovely and the staff were friendly as we were checking in. The bedroom was disappointing, the room was very big but there was a tiny bed in the very corner of the room. Apart from that the room was very clean if in need of some redecoration. The tv reception was bad, we could just about see tv3 and that was it.

The worst was yet to come. I was just settling in for a good nights sleep (I'm 3 months pregnant) after a lovely meal at the bar when the band started to tune up below us. Well I might as well have been down there with them. I don't think I've ever stayed in a noisier room in my life. They finally stopped after 1am and after that the hotel was quiet.

The breakfast the following morning was lovely, but after the lack of sleep all I wanted to do was go home. One word of warning if you are intending to stay in the Clanree on a Sat night check if there is a band playing in the bar and if there is make sure you're not staying in a room that's right above it.

Travelled to this hotel with a coach company for 4 nights in January out of which we had hot water for one morning and one afternoon - moved rooms but still no hot water - had e-mailed hotel previous to visit enquiring if vegetarian menu available and told it was. Each night no vegetarian option was on the sparce menu and when the waitress was asked what the vegetarian meal was, was told vegetable lasagne!
Whilst hotel staff did their best to solve problems no solution was forthcoming even though they kept insisting a plumber was on site and was fixing the problem with the water. Having now looked at previous reviews for this hotel I see the hot water has been a problem since December.
Also the variation in the breakfast each morning had to be seen to be believed, one day full Irish, the next bacon, sausage and beans was the only choice, the next day 5 cereals plus porridge and an assortment of fruits followed by full Irish.
This hotel whilst sporting beautiful carpets, curtains and furniture really does need to sort out its heating and water problems and do something about the menu.
All in all a very disappointing stay in what should have been a lovely comfortable hotel if the 6 lane road can be ignored.

We stayed two nights at the Clanree with our 2 1/2 yr old boy. From the moment we arrived, staff were very helpful regarding cots etc... We had booked 2 nights B&B plus 1 dinner - The dinner was an excellent 5 course meal. Bottles of wine were on average €19-€23 - very inexpensive for a nice hotel. Restaurant staff were very nice to our son and even gave him little toys to play with to keep him occupied.

On our second night we had the early bird menu which was a 3 course meal for €22.50 and the main course should have cost that alone. We were given plenty of extra's such as veg, potatoes etc where most places charge these as extra cost.

The room was big, very comfortable, lovely and warm. Plenty of hot water.

The Spa and leisure facilities were lovely - included a kiddies pool and staff there were lovely too. Plenty of parking available.
Breakfast too was lovely and didn't leave you hungry.

Overall, i would recommend this hotel to others. For what we got, it was well worth the money!

Disappointing

This was a poor hotel overall. We booked a suite for a treat.- the website showed a lovely huge room with adjoining sitting room. We were given a basic room , and when we complained were told that there are no suites in the Clanree. Were overcharged by the web booking site. Asked for a vase to display a bouquet and were given an empty pickled egg jar.
Bar was cold, drafty with unfriendly service. There was smashed glasses and bottles in the car park.
Leisure centre was fine, restaurant OK.
Tap water was very dirty looking and we were told there was a problem with the water supply.

Could do a lot better

Took my family to the Clanree hotel for two nights. Was awake all night from machinery noise, I was told it was the heating, however, when I pointed out the lack of hot water I was told it was because the heating was not working! I did not find one clean window in the hotel, a lack of cleanness in public areas worried me greatly, what about the non public areas? While I was complaining at the front desk, two more guests strolled up with their tales of woe including broken fittings and a safety rail in a bath that fell off. The swimming pool was good and the bed room was big, the food was OK although it tasted like it all came from Sharwoods jars rather than being prepared from scratch. It was cheap though and I delayed booking to the last minute and got it €20 cheaper per person than the original quote. The hotel is a good distance from the town, you would need a car to visit Letterkenny.

I've been reading the below reviews and have been wondering if we actually stayed in the same hotel! The staff is unfriendly and abrupt! The cracks in the walls and ceilings left a lot to the imagination. The room standard was ok but the noise from the road was deafening even with the window closed. To give one example of the service.... when the bartender did not clear our table after 4 hours, I went to the bar and asked for a cloth to clean off the table. He said no problem and that he would be down in a short while (the bar was not busy). I was hoping he would get a subtle hint. But guess what? He came down, put the cloth on the table and WALKED OFF. So, I put all the used glasses on the bar and cleaned off the table myself. Isn’t that great service..! I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Really lovely hotel

I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights for a short break. The rooms are very nice particularly the bathroom which was huge and had been refurbished so was clean and contemporary. The lobby is very impressive and the leisure facilities were excellent. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. We had dinner one night and it could not be faulted. Breakfast was a buffet so all you can eat! This is simply a lovely luxurious hotel and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to visit spectacular Donegal.

Well,my wife and I stayed here this weekend, we have just returned. To be honest, the Clanree website makes it look absolutly wonderful, t looks clean, modern, sleek classy. They even have a picture of multi-millionare crooner Daniel O'Donnell celebrating his wedding there on the website, so you would think, that if it's good enough for Daniel, it's good enough for me....NOT

Firstly, the receptionist was lovely, that's not an issue. We got the key to our room and off we went. The first sign of things to come was that the hallway ceiling was caving in, a huge massive crack ran the whole way down the corridor. Into the room and it was indeed well spaced, in fact it feels as if there is some furniture missing. So, off to ed we go (it's a long drive from Dublin!) there was a function on that night in the hotel, and to say that we felt like we were attending it is an understatement. IT WAS SO LOUD, it felt like the DJ was in the rom with us. We could hear word for word what he was saying alon with the cheers and laughter of the crowd. I asked the receptionist about upgrading our room and she actually told me that if we move to an 'executive' room that it will be even louder!!!

So eventually we fell asleep, children ran up and down the corridor all night, shouting and laughing and slamming doors.

Breakfast is excellnt, good buffet style. We decided to check out the leisure centre, the website shows a very classy marble pillared place (the pillars were indeed plasterboard and hollow) so we gave that a skip.

We ate in the village in a place called Lemon tree and returned for drinks in the hotel bar. Staff were friendly but the bar is badly laid out and not very nice, the band were overpowered by the music from a wedding in the next room.

Check out was smooth and taxi was quick but to be honest, the noise levels were shocking, and we will never stay there again. Next time I'd choose the Raddison up the road.

Fantastic Hotel

This hotel (which has recently been renamed as The Clanree Hotel) is beautiful in my opinion and is ideal for a special night away. The staff in the hotel are really friendly and helpful. We arrived just after lunch and even though checkin is not until 3 we were really pleased to find that this was not a problem and the staff were able to accommodate us immediately. We were also provided with a free newspaper on arrival which we thought was a nice touch. The decor in the hotel is modern and refreshing with large air conditioned bedrooms and a big bathroom. The bedroom and bathroom are extremely clean also!!!

We have stayed in Letterkenny before but never in this hotel since it is not in the town centre (5 mins in a taxi though) but we will definitely be returning. Free parking is available at the hotel.

We dined in the hotel restaurant and had a really tasty meal for a reasonable price. The restaurant had a good crowd in it also which to me is always a good sign. There is a beer garden where food is also served. Breakfast (full Irish breakfast) was also of a good standard in comparison with other hotels we have stayed in. The bar is open to residents until 3.00am.

In our opinion this hotel is definitely the best we have visited in Letterkenny and we can't wait to return - our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer!!!

Good hotel but pricey

I have stayed here a few times.The hotel itself is nice and the rooms are good sized and clean.Shower leaked out onto the floor this stay, but staff seemed to ignore this complaint.The breakfast is very good and there is a great selection.The bar is very lively but gets absolutely jammed due to the fact that locals go there.Think rooms are overpriced.

Top Local Tips for Letterkenny

Ards forest park - Walk, jog, cycle. only 30 minutes from Letterkenny Ards forest park is approx 40 minutes from Letterkenny, after the town of Creeslough. It's a great place for a quick walk in amazing surroundings.Apart from being stunningly beautiful, it's a great place for a light or strenuous walk, as well as jogging or cycling. It's by the sea and the back strand beach is absolutely breathtaking. This place will shake the cobwebs away. Another plus is that you can walk there in most weather as the walks are reasonably sheltered by the trees. Its free to get into from October to April (approx) and during the summer months if you want a short walk (and dont want to pay) park further up opposite Ballymore Church and walk in thru the tunnel.
