Historical Traveller Reviews of Cabra Castle Hotel

Spooks and things that go bump in the night!

from MsManda
We stayed in Cabra castle while attending a friends wedding. The location is stunning and the bar area is nice and relaxed with plenty of nooks and crannies to sit and chill out.
The food is fantastic and the portions are huge, the staff as well are extremely courteous and professional.
The accommodation ( in the courtyard ) is basic and you can hear all your neighbours noctural movements. NOt a good diea if you are there for a nice relaxing break.
The rooms are in a two up two down arrangement and not all have a bath. The are tastefully furnished and very clean.
Wardrobe space in limited but there is a nice seating area in the rooms and a lovely low roof which gives a nice country feel.
The walk from the courtyard to the hotel is not for anyone with mobility difficulties there are plenty of stairs and corners to negotiate and lots of really spooky pictures hanging on the walls (look out for the portrait of the lady with the huge nose)
All in all, grand for a short stay but you are really fleeced for the privilege of staying in the castle, there are no leisure facilities and I think after a day it would become a bit tedious. Golf is free for residents but the course isn't that well maintained (grass in the bunkers and daisies on the greens).

Great Escape!!

from hbscubagirl
We spent 2 wonderful nights in Cabra Castle. The room and grounds were beautiful. The castle was so much fun to explore. The food was amazing! The staff was so helpful and friendly. We were so impressed and would encourage anyone to spend the last days of their vacation at the Castle. It was about an hour drive to Dublin airport, but was so worth the drive.

A Valentine trip to Cabra Castle

from richhill
We have just returned from an overnight stay in Cabra Castle for Valentines night and all I can say is that is was excellent. From the moment we went through the door we knew we had made the right choice. We had booked a dinner, bed and breakfast break and were given a suite. It was absolutely beautiful, the bed and all the furnishings were really lovely. We had the valentine dinner 5 courses....wonderful. The staff could not do enough for you and were always on the look out for what you might need. They were courteous and helpful at all times. The whole Castle was spotless. We will be returning at the next available opportunity.

Loved storming the castle for ghosts!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I am a travel agent and wanted to experience the castle while in Ireland. It was GREAT! I enjoyed the food, the staff and the room. They have an Irish Wolf Hound - sweet heart! GO - enjoy your stay and make sure you have time to ride horses in the day and hunt for the ghost at night....

Excellent castle, reasonably priced; can be booked online

from RoomRaider69
Excellent castle, very reasonably priced. We were in room 57 in the courtyard (a much more recent addition), but the room felt very authentic with interior stonework, thick walls, a Juliet balcony, and a large arched window. (Room 57 is on the end and has windows on 3 sides, which makes it a bit better than others in the courtyard.) The bed was large, warm, and comfortable, and there were several seats and a large mirror for make-up.

Breakfast is in the castle itself, though the buffet selection was a bit limited. The castle has a few common rooms with elegant antiques, fox hunting pictures, and oil portraits.

Bring driving directions (on the website) and a good road atlas, and try to arrive before dark. Driving to the castle after dark can be a hair-raising experience, as the roads are very narrow and winding. Don't underestimate how long it will take to drive. Ladies, bring hair conditioner, which unfortunately is not provided.

Big pro: the hotel can be booked online instantly.

ALERT: For Americans, the hotel will bill your credit card in USD plus charge a 3% commission for this "service". As has become standard practice, the hotel does not tell you about this 3% commission or offer a choice of currencies, which I consider deceptive. If you have a credit card that charges less than 3% foreign currency commission, insist that the hotel bills the card in EUR and not USD. The front desk clerk will grumble about having to reprocess the card, but you are avoiding a minor rip-off by the hotel.

Truly a castle!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed 2 of the 6 nights that we were in Ireland, at Cabra and were pleasantly surprised all the way around!! We would have stayed longer if our other stay (at Dublin Four Seasons) wasn't pre-booked.

Cabra was head and shoulders above the other similarly rated Abbeyglen castle, in which we also stayed. (Abbeyglen was definitely decent, don't get me wrong.) But Cabra truly felt like a castle. We stayed in the old part of the castle itself, in a 3-room suite. (Rm 24) There are maybe 50 newer rooms also--which they did an excellent job of on the exterior, making the buildings look old. However, those newer rooms are very Holiday Inn-like inside. The new rooms would be the only "drawback" in our eyes.

The restaurant, grounds, bar, service and cleanliness all got high ratings from us--and we thoroughly used them all. The castle seems under-marketed in photos, and from anything we saw on the web. Meaning, we were astounded by how much we liked it in person--yet we couldn't have guessed from what we had read beforehand. Truly a great experience and a pleasant surprise!

Beautiful hotel, shame about the chaos!

from HeatherSydenham
Beautiful Hotel, lovely setting in it's own golf course. Our room was in the old stable block and was spacious and comfortable except that when the people in the room above walked around (as they did from 3am to 5am!) the noise was terrible. The chaos was that the staff did not seem to know where our party was to eat, at what time etc. Also did not inform us of special entertainment. It was supposed to be a special "Farewell dinner" but there was nothing special about it. Families were split up, no attempt had been made to organise tables to suit, and the service was awful. It took two hours to eat a mediocre meal with senior staff being quite snappy when asked any questions. Wine finally arrived half way through the meal. Perhaps if we had not been in a large group it would have been better, but that does not excuse the rudeness of the dining room staff.

Excellent Choice of Irish Castle

from Lydka
My husband and I recently went on a driving tour of Ireland and included in our travels was a night at this castle. It was spectacular. Upon arrival we were shown to our suite. We don't know how we got this three room suite but if you want to treat yourself ask for room 24. When we walked in we were shown our sitting room, large four piece bathroom, and our bedroom. We then went for a walk around the grounds and thoroughly enjoyed our time exploring every nook and cranny. My husband went down in the evening to enjoy the music and get a drink and desert in the bar which he said was excellent. Of all the places we stayed, we both rate this our favourite. We were made to feel welcome throughout our stay and the staff were extremely helpful in every regard. If we travel back to Ireland we will definitely be staying at this castle again. If you are trying to choose between Ballynahinch Castle and Cabra Castle my advice would be to choose this one. Ballynahinch is more for die hard outdoorsmen. Cabra castle also offered a free round of golf on its onsite course, which we didn't use, but thought was was a great offer. If you have any further questions, I would be glad to answer them, or if you want more pictures...

Nice Stop After Arrival

from AMULD3145
Cabra Castle is a nice stop after a long flight from the US to Ireland. While not deluxe, it is very comfortable. We had a room in the Stables area. This is a short walk from the main building, but the walkway is covered for part of the distance and the rooms in the stable area appear to be larger than those in the main building. My main complaint is that the hotel books a number of weddings and tour groups, so the bar and restaurant areas can get crowded. While not great, this is a nice hotel and one in which I would stop again if I were headed north or west from Dublin.

A must for Castle Lovers

from A TripAdvisor Member
My wife and I are lovers of Castle stays and have visited some of the greats, Dromoland, Adare, Kinnitty. However Cabra castle is by far the experience that you should expect from a castle stay and more. The staff are very experience and friendly and not overbearing. The castle itself has the perfect mix of old world charm and modern. It is very popular with weddings however at no time will you feel disturbed by these events like other venues we have visited. As for value for money it cant be bettered.I have spent three times the money in more so called world class castles and felt cheated all round. Would reccommend the Courtyard rooms for that special stay. Food excellent.Already planning our next stay.
