Disappointing at best

I was traveling with 12 family members, and we were really looking forward to the Killarney Royal. The location is excellent - right in town near pubs and restaurants. Unfortunately, some of the rooms we got were filthy, all of them smelled like mold, and it really needs a major update. One of them was just disgusting, and the floor in my room was gross. The bathroom could not get clean because the grout was so old. The hallway floors were so noisy I thought I'd wake up the entire hotel after enjoying an evening out just walking through and our door squeaked really loud. The food was adequate and the staff very friendly.

Inconvenient parking

My wife and I stayed for two midweek days early Feb 2007. There is no parking- you are directed to a council car park a couple of hundred yards away. The security of this car park is questionable especially bearing in mind that Ireland has the highest crime rate in the EU. There is also no parking directly outside the hotel to allow for unloading bags. The management should speak to the council about this because if it`s a problem in Feb when the hotel is nigh empty what is it like during the season? The hotel itself was comfortable, the room large and the staff friendly. The restaurant was only used for breakfast, other meals were served in the bar area. The food was average at best. I would suggest that the management consider connecting to satellite TV because in this day and age a choice of 4 channels, and one of those in Irish, is just not sufficient. Considering the wet Killarney weather I should think those TVs are pretty busy.

quiet and friendly hotel

My husband our 16 year old daughter and I have just returned from three nights at the Killarney Royal.
We had a triple room that was huge with a large bathroom complete with fluffy robes and slippers. The room was very comfortable although it had no view, just a wall! As it was so convenient for the town we didn't spend much time looking out of the window anyway. On arrival we were sent up tea and delicious scones with the compliments of the house. Killarney has plenty of reasonably priced and very good quality restaurants. We were spoilt for choice. Buckleys bar at the Arbutus just over the road was good in the evening with varied entertainment and a good atmosphere.
The hotel staff were all very pleasant and helpful and we felt they were all anxious to please at every level. We ate in the bar on our first night and had an excellent Caesar salad and breakfast was good also, especially the porridge.
We left with very pleasant memories to take home and will be back without doubt.

Best choice in Killarney

They have the NICEST staff I've encountered anywhere, extra helpful and attentive to all guests. Perfect location just 1 block from the action, but off-center enough to be quiet. Comfortable, homey lobby that many people used as their living room. Very good food in the attached restaurant. Rooms very nice and bathrooms large. Free internet in the lobby. Excellent breakfast buffet plus hot food to order off the menu. This is one of the best hotel stays I've ever enjoyed. I'd stay here again anytime!

We had a large room with air -conditoning. The white fluffy robes in the bathroom were fought over!

It is in a wonderful location on the main street in Killarney!

Not so hot

We were excited to stay at this hotel after reading the reviews on this page. Unfortunately, the hotel has many problems. We were provided a room that had the distinct odor of a long decayed dead rodent. This was probably not unique to the hotel as many of the rooms were being aired out as we walked down the hallway. Speaking of the hallway, it has little hills and valleys, and is not a straight course.

The room itself, while sizable, had the feel of a rooming house stay. Outdated and moldy would be the best description, including missing tile from the bathroom. There was no sense of style. At well over $300, one expects more.

The breakfast was not up to other hotels of this price level. One can order off the menu for hot items and also select from cold cuts, etc. We were a bit surprised when our egg dishes were brought out almost immediately after our rather unpleasant waitress took our order. This was due to the fact that the eggs were powdered and, frankly, inedible.

I sense that this hotel is profiting from the current rage in Irish travel, as well as the booming Irish economy. At $100/night, it would have been appropriate. For what we received, it was an awful tourist trap.

A delightful stay

Recently stayed three nights at the Royal and it was a delightful experience. Arrived soaking from the rain and within minutes Maura, who checked us in, call up to the room to see if we would enjoy some tea. Shortly thereafter trays arrived filled with tea, scones, butter and jam. It was a wonderful welcome and we totally forgot about the rain! The breakfasts were the best and filled us for the day. We found the staff most helpful in arranging trips for us to the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle peninsula. The hotel location was perfect for exploring Killarney and we enjoyed sitting by the warm fire in the lobby on return.

Off Season special

Took my 8 year old daughter off to Ireland for a half term break and passed through Killarney on our tour.
I have stayed at McSweeneys next door to the Royal and found it to be good.. but the Royal is far better. I was going to stay at McSweenys but they were having some work done, so I popped into the Royal to get a good rate.. and boy did they deliver, we had a fantastic, cosy, spacious room for a meagre 85 euro inc breakie! The staff were lovely, nothing too much trouble... had dinner which was also v.good.
It was so good we decided to stay for an extra night!
My daughter loves the pancakes w/ maple syrup for breakfast and the the full Irish was superb and kept me going all day. We went horseriding at killarney stables and had the best hack out ever, beautiful frosty morning riding through the Muckross estate was a real highlight.
Killarney is fantatic out of season if you get the weather... and this hotel will definitely be on my 'stop' list next time we visit the Emerald Isle.
Hope you find this useful... hotels like this are a rare find.

Feel Like Royalty

A two night stay at the Killarney Royal will convince you why they deserve a listing in the coffee table book which describes the best hotels in England, Scotland and Ireland lying on the tables in the very inviting and cozy front room of this very small and well run hotel. Sit by the fireplace and sip a cup of tea or coffee brought immediately upon your asking by Gillian the receptionist/concierge/ front desk person. The staff is very much at your disposal much like if you were one of the "royals".The rooms are outstanding and very well appointed with fluffy robes and towel warmers. The two rooms we had were the largest we had in Ireland. Both had a putting machine as well...a first. The breakfast had the most variety of any of the four hotels we stayed at during our weeklong trip...offering fruits, sweets, muffins, salmon, ham along with the usual cooked breakfast. The leisure facility was located a block down from the hotel and was first class just like the KRH. Located right across the street was Sean Murphy's bar and his upstairs restaurant, The Lord Kenmare...excellent food and service with a gracious and charming host. The food was so delicious we should have eaten there the second night as well as. We did not have a very pleasant experience or good meal at Foley's a few blocks away...terribly overpriced with a pretty indifferent wait staff and a very uninviting head waiter. After Murphy's closed, we went back to the Royal Bar where John the bartender was willing and able to stay up and serve drinks as long as you were able to keep them coming. I was able to negotiate two rooms, two nights at a 100 Euro per room, per night double occupancy. When you figure the cost of a B&B around 40 Euro per person, the additional 20 Euro per couple was worth it, even if it stretched the budget. After all how often do you get to be treated royally in your life.

Stay here if you can- Great staff, hotel bar and the rooms are fantastic. Huge rooms, even have a putter and automatic ball returner in each one. Location is perfect for hitting the pubs too.

Top Local Tips for Killarney

Great restaurant Gabys Restaurant in Killarney High Street is where to eat. Excellent food, great service ,which of course, is reflected in the bill. If you arrive cold and wet ,as we did ,you will soon regret accepting the table near the open fire. "More water over here please!" A very nice place but please leave the lobsters in the tank to enjoy old age.

Ring of Kerry This is a perfect location for a trip to the Ring of Kerry.

Book Ahead Killarney is a very popular destination as it is, not only a charming town, but the beginning of the Ring of Kerry drive. We arrived late afternoon, after a long day's touring ,without a reservation only to find that most accommodation was booked out, or above our budget. I suggest that you book ahead and , if arriving by car,arrive early rather than later, as we had to park our hire car away from our hotel overnight.
