I have to slightly disagree with Mary's review. Although everything was great, especially the spa and great breakfast, I found the surroundings not too pretty. Its situated on a main road and the rooms at the back overlook a massive paved area - although beyond the paved area the views are quite beautiful. Besides that everything else was just great - close to the town and many great golf courses.

The Brehon Hotel situated on the Muckross Road in Killarney has superb views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. The hotel to sum is up is pure luxury. Every last detail is thought of, down to a provision of dressing gowns and slippers. The staff are warm and friendly, most courteous and welcoming. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend this hotel for sheer comfort and relaxation. You have been told!

Historical Traveller Reviews of The Brehon Hotel

Great place to stay in Killarney

We stayed here in October for a weekend break and are regular visitors to Killarney. The Brehon was by far the best place we have ever stayed in the region, and great value for money. It is contemporary but still warm. Our room overlooked the National Park accross the road and was spacious and funky. Little details were great like the additional mineral water placed beside your bed during the turn down service and the amenities in the bathroom add to the experience. The staff were all very friendly and the receptionist greeted us with a "welcome to The Brehon", you don't hear that very much anymore.

We had breakfast in bed once, great eggs benedict on brioche. The second morning we went to the buffet breakfast which was outstanding. We actually hardly left the Hotel as it was such a haven of relaxation. The bar food and food in the restaurant are both great. I loved the fact that the wine in the bar is not served in 1/4 bottles as is so often the case in Irish Hotels. We were sorry that there was nothing of interest to us in the National Events Centre next door, there was a great line up of upcoming events including Status Quo and next time we are going to book our stay around a concert we want to see. We will definitely be staying at the Brehon when we visit Killarney in the future. I would recommend that if you are booking a stay you book your spa treatment in advance, the spa is amazing but seems to book out quickly for weekends, we tried to book an additional treatment when we arrived but it was booked out.

Young Solicitors Give It The Thumbs Up!

from karen25
The Society of Young Solicitor's annual Autumn Conference was held in The Brehon, and we can confirm that it was categorically one of the best conferences held in years! From start to finish, the service was impecable, the staff always friendly, the ambience ever welcoming, the food divine and the spa pure luxury! The decor was ultra modern and chic, and we would highly recommend The Brehon for any group, romantic or family weekend as it caters for all! We take our hats off to Mr Sean O'Driscoll (the GM) for his cool, calm and collected ways in ensuring that we had a super weekend. We can't wait for our return trip!

I would go back

from Gaelic_traveller
I stayed here for one night in September for a function. Requested a twin room when I booked 6 weeks earlier and found that they had given me a disabled room which meant the shower was very low down ( would have been difficult to take one) and no bath. It was late in the evening when we checked in ( they never even mentioned it was for a disabled person on check in which was very surprising) and I requested another room and was lucky that they had one last one remaining. Have no idea why they didn't give me that one in the first place seen as I had booked well in advance..( if that hadn't happened I would have rated this hotel excellent). On saying that, the fact that they do have excellent facilities for disabled people is great. Overall I found the hotel a very comfortable place to stay. The food was really good throughout the stay which included a really good breakfast and we had really great coffee in the lobby on a lazy Sunday afternoon. The staff at reception were friendly but that is the least you would expect. for a 4*. The location is a pleasant walking distance from the town. I didn't use the SPA so have no comment. The hotel itself has a lot of dark wood and marble decor which is effective and a high ceiling in the lobby which works. The restaurant decor is basic enough but fine. When I do go back to Killarney I would stay here again.

Stayed in this hotel for one night in November which was truly sumptuous. I did not think it would live up to its brochure as so many do but it failed to disappoint. We stayed in a superior room with views of the golf course. The room was large, beautifully decorated with a spacious bathroom and every comfort provided ie. iron, kettle...
We had dinner in the hotel restaurant which was beautifully presented but we found the menu limited and over-priced for what it offered. The hotel spa is truly beautifully and one cant help but be rejuvenated and relaxed after this. I have never felt so well from such treatments. The pool itself is small but the sauna and steam room are large and the spa has a shower room which mimicks the rainforest and ocean. We would stay here over and over if this new hotel maintains its fabulous starting standard but we would eat in the town of Killarney rather than the hotel next visit.

In january we also stayed in their two bedroom self catering apartments which are of a remarkable quality and standard. The master bedroom had a large ensuite bathroom and their is another large bathroom provided in the apartment seperately. The kitchen/living area is large with views of the golf course. The kitchen was supplied with soda bread, milk, tea/coffee for that all important arrival snack. The apartment also had a laundry room with a washer/drier combo and ironing facilities. When self catering is as nicely arranged and serviced as the Brehon/Gleneagle apartments are then self catering is a pleasure.

Round Table National Conference

from Mrs Nic B
My husband and I stayed here when we attended the Round Table National Conference, which had its headquarters next door in the Gleneagles Hotel. We had a marvellous twin room on the fourth floor, with a massive bathroom with long bath and separate shower cubical as well as heated floor. Even though the hotel was fully booked, due to the conference, it never seemed too fulll and service good. Only criticism was that no extension was made to breakfast end time on the Sunday, which resulted in a huge queue at 9:55am! However, all were seated and fed eventually. With difficulty, my husband did use the pool one morining - there is little published information about what is and isn't available to you if you are not having a treatment and I'm still not totally clear (something about only 10 people allowed in at a time?) which I believe put off a lot of people even contemplating use of the pool facility. Suggest the hotel think about whether it is offering a pool for general use or just for treatments? That aside, a very good hotel, service, visit and conference!

Excellent new hotel

This is a newly built hotel and is very spacious and decorated with no expense spared.
Excellent spa facilities and friendly staff who speak a variety of languages! Went for a wedding but would definitely return for a holiday.

Spent three nights at the brehon last weekend. Loved every minute of it. Staff very friendly and food excellent as was room. Also a great base for touring.

fab hotel

last weekend went to this hotel for the 'bridal shower' package. Rooms first rate, gorgeous dinner even got a champagne reception! The spa is devine, but we did book treatments well in advance. Very helpful staff, only complaint would be that the service at breakfast wasn't great. Well worth a visit!

great base for touring but

the brehon is a very impressive looking hotel from the outside. it is quite new maybe 18 months old. however there is little or no grounds with it. i would say that it is a perfect place to stay if you want a base to tour from each day. if however you are looking for a hotel break to chill out and use the hotel solely , then i would not recommend it.the bedrooms are nicely appointed, good size and a nicely fitted bathroom. bath and seperate shower cubicle. breakfast was the only meal we took in the hotel and it was fairly standard fare. leisure centre is nice. small pools rather than one large one. sauna and steam room , both of which were closed for some reason one of the mornings.i suppose the area which i was most disappointed in was the hotel lobby. huge but totally soleless big for the sake of it with tiny gas fires which threw out no heat , no comfy area to read a book near a fire. no grounds for a stroll around either. perhaps my memories of parknasilla and sheen falls have me spoiled! to conclude a grand hotel as a base clean and comfortable

Loved it but......

My boyfriend & I stayed for 2 nights at The Brehon at the end of December including New Years Eve night.

First impressions were fantastic, great service at check-in, friendly, helpful staff & a lovely lobby area. It is within walking distance of Killarney, about 15/20 mins.

At first glance our room was lovely, great views, big bathroom & the bed was very comfortable however we then noticed little things which hadn't been finished/done properly in the room. These included:

fittings over the bed had not been measured properly & looked really bad and bathroom problems including a very visible SQUARE hole in the tile behind the ROUND showerhead 'arm' on the wall, bath was badly sealed around the edges & the bathroom sink had been fitted incorrectly & had too much masking on one side that you could clearly see it.

This bad finishing in our room really did colour our view of the hotel as we felt that we were paying enough for an expensive hotel & expected high quality (which we saw in in the rest of the hotel) but not in our room. The fact that this hotel isn't graded leads me to believe that there are more finishings to be completed in the hotel before it can be graded to a 4* standard.

My boyfriend works in the construction industry & was amazed at the (lack of) quality of these finishings. He said he he'd be sacked if he handed any property back to owners in the state our room was in.

On a 'lighter' note, we ate both mornings in the restaurant & the food was great. Service was good.

The bar also was lovely. We didn't have any treatments due to the spa being fully booked weeks in advance.

On the whole we liked The Brehon's common areas - lobby, restaurant, bar - the staff also deserve a mention as they were truly helpful & friendly but our room really did leave the hotel down. It isn't a cheap hotel & we expected high quality for the price we paid. I couldn't say that we'll never be going back there but I would probably wait until it's graded by the tourist board to the 4* standard it's looking for before we'd consider going back again.
