Historical Traveller Reviews of Lake Hotel

Surviving on the view!!!!

from Yellowbely
This is a really charming hotel which has a lot going for it. It has the best vista in the world, a lovely old hotel which is beautifully done up by the owners ,and it is close enough to killarney town...But...
It does not have the pleasant staff that one would expect. A girl called briddee is their only saving grace. No one can understand english which causes no end of problems. If you have money you can buy a lovely hotel and make it a nicer place by spending more money...but... the people working in it are the thing that make it a good hotel. Its a good hotel, it could be a great hotel.

Overpriced - Overwarm - Overnoisy - Underfed!

from Biffo28
If you want to pay over £100+/night for a hotel that - has no air con in the rooms (Yes! you do need it in Ireland in the summer!) - has no mini bar facilities, - has a choice of breakfast that fails to match that of a £25/night B+B, (eg. continental breakfast served in the bedoom = 2 croissants -NOTHING ELSE!!! had to make our own tea in the room!!) If you want a hotel that is noisy in the rooms adjacent to the main entrance, that refuses to serve tea/coffee with dinner (you will have to wait an hour and take it in another room!!) - that overcharges on the bill for 2/3 guests checking out at the same time as we did, then this is the place for you!! It might be ideally sited on the lakeside but that fact alone does not warrant its charges!
Management Response from Kerryman_7
Just responding to the unfairness of this review and here is why. Our Hotel is family owned and Family run mainly on the feedback of our large repeat customers. Why our customers come back is exactly the opposite of what this review suggests. The hotel was built in 1820 and being an old hotel we only have air conditioning in our Lounges, Bar, Restaurant, Sun Lounge and Leisure Centre. Our climate at present has not required us to put in air conditioning. There are many modern hotels with mini bars, pools, a/c and so on but these do not offer the Lake Views, 12th Century castles, Native Deer and friendly Irish welcomes ti nane a few. Our guest comments book suggest the opposite to this review, I must also note we are not perfect and we try hard every day to improve our Hotel and would normally take notice of an unhappy customers feed back. This is not a fair review and may affect our business. On the breakfast points we have a huge choice from Fresh Atlantic Fish to local Meats, Cheeses, Eggs and of course Fresh Breads juices, cerials, fruits, herb teas "etc". Overall our breakfast would meet a 4 star + rating and as we are 3 star hotel it offers even better value to our customers.

I would like to thank Tripadvisor for allowing me to stand up for our property, 77 staff and the Huggard family at the Lake Hotel as we feel we are not getting fair dues here. I value the reviews on tripadvisor but this time it very unfair. Other rewiews we must take on the chin sometimes and more are great to see. We will be working hard to meet the ever changing expectations of our customers and look forward to the future.

A piece of heaven in Ireland

from Mills15
There is a saying in Ireland, 'there are no strangers, only friends we have yet to meet'. This has never been so true when it comes to the Lake Hotel Killarny.
The staff are welcoming and friendly and the hotel itself is a real piece of heaven in Ireland. You would be forgiven for thinking that the gardens were shipped in from Eden, especially when the deer walk across the gardens and take a moonlight swim out across Lake Killarny.
If you book a superior room, this is exactly the view you get from the balcony of your room.
The bedrooms are large and very roomy and include a dining and seating area.
The restaurant serves food of a very high standard and we particulary liked the fact that children are not permitted into the restaurant or bar after 7pm.
Have a look at the hotels website and what you see is exactly what your get. This is the second time we have been back to this hotel and it was just as good as the first time. This is the most relaxed holiday we have ever had and intend to go back year after year.

Stunning views

from pat2
A large old hotel by the lake with one of the most beautiful views anywhere.
Our room was large with 4poster bed and a balcony overlooking the lake, and the place was just a haven of peace and tranquility compared to the Vegas-style strip of hotels along the road coming out from town. The trails (hiking, biking, horse-and-carts) go by the entrance to the driveway to the hotel which is right on the edge of the National Park. The big old dining room has huge windows so everyone gets the view, and food was great. Ditto the bar.
We asked to change to a higherup room and they were helpful and obliging. The suggestions for hikes and excursions on their website are good. Sitting out in front by the old boathouse at sunset was idyllic.
The hotel's not modern, and not cheap, but we'll never forget our stay

We spent two nights at the Lake Hotel in late April 2005. My boyfriend and I traveled with his parents who have stayed at the Lake Hotel more than a dozen times over the past years. We were very impressed with the accommodations, the courteous staff (Niles was the manager) and the wonderful view of the lake. It was very serene and felt more like a spa retreat than a hotel. For the price and quality of food/pub, we will definitely stay here again. They have Internet access and a Web cam connected to the Lake view so that you may say hello to friends back home during your stay.

Love the Lake Hotel

from maryjenn
We stayed her for our anniversary and I absolutely loved it. It is undergoing renovation so parts of the hotel were still old style however our superior room was lovely we had a balcony overlooking the SPECTACULAR scenery. I could lie in bed and gaze out at the Lake/Mountains. Truly beautiful. (Also helped that we got a rare and beautiful weekend weather wise)
We also ate in the restaurant and the food was lovely, no complaints whatsoever and agin the view is amazing.
There is a lot that can be said about Killarney both good and bad, but after this weekend I feel the town has pulled up its socks somewhat, it has some spectaculr scenery and hotels & Spas to match, and along with the modernisation of some of the shops etc it has definatley brought it into the 21st century. Thank god the old leprechans seems to be fading away!!
I would really recommend it for a weekend away or to visit.
You can not beat Kerry County the sunsets alone are enough to hook you.
I look forward to going back here.

Wonderfully unique

from Chi-townRedHead
We visited the Lake Hotel in November, 2004. Although we arrived well after dark, we actually gasped audibly as we pulled into the drive- the grounds were that beautiful. We were delighted to find that we'd been upgraded to a lake view room, complete with small balcony and jacuzzi tub. It looked as if it had been recently refurbished; it was rustic, yet nicely appointed. The view is spectacular, the lovely lake with the mountains in the background.
The hotel is older and full of charm and character. It would make a good setting for a movie. What really sets the Lake Hotel apart is the staff; every single staff member was totally charming, yet professional. It is a family owned and operated hotel, which set it apart from the hotels we're accustomed to here in the U.S. We extended our stay there, as we liked it so much; when we left we felt as if we were leaving friends.

Loved the Lake Hotel

from May_Zee_2004
We just returned from a stay at the Lake Hotel in Killarney in October. What a wonderful stay we had! The hotel is very old but has been updated and has such character and charm to it. There is a lovely sitting area with fireplaces going that you can sit and have a drink in. The dining room has all glass windows that offer a spectacular view of the mountains and lake. There is a cozy pub area and Irish entertainment on Thurs. and Sat. evenings. There is a varied breakfast buffet served every morning.

The standard rooms are very large and spacious. They also have balcony rooms that face the lake and mountains. Outstanding views. There are walking paths where you can explore the property. The red deer frequent the property in the evening and you can see them walking about (and hear their mating calls also!). They are a conversation piece.

The staff are very friendly and eager to please. There is a nice outdoor jacuzzi and steam and sauna room also.

A wonderful place to call home while visiting Killarney. Highly recommended to all.

Close to national park

from AuntAnnie
Can walk the 3km right into the national park. The set taxi fare is 10 EUR to the park and 6 EUR to town. Setting is very pleasant and staff are excellent. Best hotel prices for having laundry done, I've seen in a long time. Lots of dark wood inside, but wonderful windows looking out on grounds. Staff have a real "can do" attitude. I was sick one night and had soup and yogurt for dinner even though the menu appeared to be a fixed price. Rooms were fine, but would stay for location and helpfulness of staff.
