Heaven on earth

from A TripAdvisor Member
My girlfriend and I enjoyed a romantic weekend in the Aghadoe heights. From the moment we arrived to the moment we checked out it was magic. We stayed arrived on Saturday morning and they offered to have our car parked and luggage brought to our room. We were given a guided tour of the hotel and facilities from the receptionist. When we opened the door of our room we were awe struck. We had booked a lake view suite. The views of the Killarney mountains and lakes were breathtaking. We dined in Fredericks both nights, both nights we were served tasty food, I would recommend the scallops and the monkfish. We walked the gap of Dunloe upon the advice of the manager who greeted us at breakfast both mornings. It was truly beautiful.
The hotel surpassed every imaginable expectation we had. But I do think what sets this hotel apart is the level of service. From the barman who gave a detailed description of each wine in stock from memory to the waiter and waitresses who gave impeccable service while still giving space to enjoy your meal.
If you can't wait for heaven visit the Aghadoe Heights in Killarney.

Pure Luxury!!!

from Helena015
My husband whisked me off to The Aghadoe Heights for a mini break before the Christmas mayhem and I must say that it was an amazing experience from start to finish!! We were checked in very efficently by a lovely lady named Louise who then gave us a tour of the hotel. As we chatted i found out that she is actually from Killarney and gave us some great recommendations on which of the sights to see and where to shop and eat...all the important things!! We ate in the Hotel restaurant on the first evening and found it wonderfully relaxing with mouth watering meals. Our room was one of the superior suites and was really comfortable, clean and cosy. We actually met one of the owners Marie one evening in the bar and as she was enquiring as to how our stay was we felt we had to mention how impressed we were with Louise and the general profesionalism of all the staff. Marie was such a nice lady and after meeting her I can now understand why her Hotel is so successful. Unfortunately we had to go home but you can be sure that I have dropped loads of hints to my hubbie in the hope we will go back soon!!! I would certinaly recommend this Hotel to anyone.

Honeymoon Heaven

from nellyfleming
This was our first trip to The Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Aveda Spa, and by far our most important...for our honeymoon. What can we say, it was perfect; from the wonderful location, high quality accommodation, friendly staff and superb food, it was all fantastic.

We arrived to the hotel before the check-in time, 11am and were greeting by a concierge at the front door. He introduced himself and very kindly parked our car and assisted us with our boot full of luggage.

We then proceeded to make our way to the front desk, where a very friendly receptionist checked us into the room. After a few seconds, she delighfully informed us that our room was available to check in and that she was personally going to give us a brief tour of the hotel & walk us to our room. We were delighted with this personal touch as we got the feel for the place.

When we reached to our Lakeview Suite we were amazed by the personal touches they had made for us. As it was our honeymoon, they had arranged for a heart shape of roses on the bed in the main bedroom. There was also a gift from the General Managers as a congratulation for our wedding celebrations.

This was Definitely five star service.

Our Room was magnificent, with plasama screen televisions, king size bed, spacious bathroom, luxurious pillows!! (which we were able to purchase on our departure),and not to forget the over whelming view of the lakes of killarney. We could have spent all day glazing at the magnificent view.

We dined in Fredrick's Restaurant on the first evening and we throughly enjoyed our meal from our starter to our mouth watering desserts. The following morning, my wife availed of its Aveda Spa. To this day she is still talking about her treatments. She would definetly recommend it to ladies who are in the need of luxurious pampering!!!

Finally, I would like to congratulate the staff here in Aghadoe as they made our honeymoon an experience not to forget and we have already re-booked to celebrate our anniversary with them next November.

Once again, well done..!!!!

This was the trip of a lifetime for the Muircheartaigh's
To name a few places of beauty wouldn't do kerry justice,, Getting to the top of Conner Pass and looking out over this area, makes one ponder how Beautiful the Almighty make Kerry for the Irish. and the Visit to Con Muircheartaigh;s Gop of Dunloe home and his wonderful wild and beautiful places he escorted our Clan to , well it was just one breath taking site after the other,
This was my 4th trip to Ireland and the Best of ALL , and on all 4 trips the iRISH people bent over backwards to make sure we all had a grand & wonderful time, to put it plainly the People of Ireland go more the the so called
Extra Mile for visitors from all over the world and getting there well the experience starts with AIR LINGUS.
We stayed during our visit the whole time at the 5 star Holel in Killarney ,THE AGHADOE HEIGHTS HOTEL & SPA , AND to say it was Grand is an Understatement, we had a room overlooking the Lock Lein of Killarney famous lakes. Just breathtaking ,We also had dinners at the LIME Tree resturant, the Beaufort Bar and Rssturant and our banquet was held at the Brehon Hotel and the places and food served was just fantastic, like I said before This was a Dream of a Trip and a Lifetime of memories.

Truly Heaven

This is a truly magical place to stay. From the moment we arrived you felt completley spoilt. The porter appeared out of no where as soon as we got to the reception desk and had our bags on his trolley before we realised. We stayed in a lake view suite. The suite itself had every thing you needed,a plasma screen, huge bath, separate shower that water was sprayed at you from all directions, fabulous lounge area and a bed you did n't want to leave. This just leaves me to tell you abou the view. You can lie in bed and look through two huge picture windows at the fantastic lakes of Killarney and Ross Castle. We went to bed with the curtains open so we could look at the view as the sun came up. It was difficult to leave that bed.
Before having dinner in the restaurant we had cocktails in the lounge. Try the Aghadoe Cocktail, it's to die for.
We could not fault anything during our dining experience. The scallops were cooked to perfection as was the monkfish. Service was excellent. The manager knew exactly what we'd had to eat and spent time talking to everyone in the restaurant. After dinner we retired to the cocktail bar for a night cap where a very friendly barman served us.

Breakfast the following morning was just as good. The juice of the day of pineapple and strawberry was delicious. We both had a full Irish and everything was cooked just right. The choice for breakfast was amazing. We 'd loved to have stayed a fortnight to try them all.

After breakfast we used tht Thermal Suite at the Spa. This was heaven. The receptionist pampers you even before you get into the suite.
A selection of saunas, steam rooms and amazing showers help you totally relax and unwind. Heated loungers looking out to the gardens mean you feel like you're in the Caribean.

A must go place to stay and the suite is worth every penny to stay in.

Very Overrated

from kivapierce
We stayed for 3 nights at the begining of Oct 2005. Concierge was there on arrival to help us in with luggage. However didn't see him again until our departure morning to take luggage out to car. No sign of him in the days and nights in between when we arrived in the pouring rain to open doors , shelter you with umbrella etc... as would be expected in a 5 star hotel.

Rooms were just ok. Contemporary design. These rooms are not plush or luxurious. Awful curtains and bedspread. Horrible fabric, bland and boring. Does not lift the room at all. Cheap handles on wardrobes. Slippers and dressing gowns supplied ( with hole in it ! ).
No expensive or nice furniture. Very 3 star hotel standard.
Good quality bed linen , comfy , good quality beds.
We had 2 rooms and both were the same. No WOW factor in the rooms at all.
Minibar - well priced & Stocked
Safe - in warerobe
Turn Down service, bottle water and handmade chocolate etc.. - as you would expect for a 5 star

Lakeside rooms had a wonderful view.
Garden rooms over looked a very muddy garden, No flowers at all ( all dead ), Garden needs winter planting , Recycling and garbage yard, staff accommodation and car park. DO NOT ACCEPT THESE ROOMS . The view from the Lakeside rooms is what makes this hotel.

TV with not enough channels for 5 star hotel. Excellent bathroom, clean, no cracks on tiles, Aveda products supplied. Grout in perfect order. No separate Shower, climb into the bath for over head shower. However the extractor fan to take out steam from bathroom also carried in cigerette smoke from another bedroom. Don't like having someone elses smoke in my bathroom.

I also noticed that the corridor on the lower ground floor ( where there are bedrooms) , smelt strongly of chlorine.

I do not feel that torn carpet on the two entrance steps upto the restaurant are acceptable for a 5 star hotel. Over all the carpet in the public areas of hotels needs to be replaced ( however I understand that this is happening next year ).

Ate out for first evening in Killarney. Would highly recommend the Cooperage Restaurant. Good food , nice restaurant and not a price rip off.

Had food in hotel Bar area on second night.
Seafood Chowder - Very nice.
Main Course took 40 minutes to arrive. Waiter came over to apologies - Kitchen very busy. Even though we could see into restaurant and it was only half full.
Fish & Chips ! Chips lovely, Fish in breadcrumbs totally overcooked and a dark shade of brown, Salad - just about acceptable - alittle imagination would have helped.
Did not eat in hotel main restaurant as I felt if they couldn't get a piece of fish right for Euro 16, I wasn't going to pay the Euro 60 each for dinner. (very average menu too )

Breakfast was alright. 2 mornings food arrived as expected. 3rd morning there must have been a problem in the kitchen as it took 35 minutes to bring out the Full Irish Breakfast.. Tea & Coffee had gone cold by the time it arrived. Breakfast was overcooked and not acceptable.

It gave us time to have a good look around the restaurant and notice the layer of dust on the blinds and family of dead flies on the window ledge ( inside hotel window, NOT outside )

The Spa - Very nice, Luxurious - what you would expect from any 5 star hotel selling itself with a spa. Make sure you book your treatments in advance of arrival as they never have any availability on the day if you leave it to chance. Expensive but worth it for a little TLC.

Swimming Pool and Jacuzzi - Fine . No lifeguard or staff on duty. Changing room too cold.
Gym - Well equiped.

Reception Staff - Very pleasant.

Check out : Met Operations Manager at checkout - brought my complaints to his attention. Got the Fish & Chips FOC.

Never actually saw the Managers / Owners over the 3 nights or 4 days.

Since in the Travel Trade , very familiar with most hotels in Ireland. This hotel was a total let down. No comparision between it and the K Club ( 5 star ) or the Merrion ( 5 star ). It was an average 4 star. I have no idea how it got 5 stars. Maybe it was the spa or the view. It certainly is not not the hotel that I had expected.
I would not return....

Did a site inspection of 2 other hotels in Killarney and would much rather stay in The Brehon ( 4 star ) but much more luxurious and plush or the Park Hotel (5 star) right in the town centre.

I would not recommend this hotel to friends or clients for the reasons above.

The Heights was most Impressive

from Jpirate
This hotel is set on one of most spectacular sites in Ireland. The view from our room was a "WOW!!" when first seen. The service was outstanding, and the staff were well trained and very quick to attend to any question or need. This was especially true in the dining areas which were staffed for the time of the year but catering to a higher than normal number of guests. The room was above average in size and with very comfortable seating and excellent amenities. The very functional and minimalist look of the room was in keeping with the hotel and its surroundings. One suggestion would be on the bedding which could use some updating as it wasn't as "comfortable" as other hotels now provide. The spa wasn't used but offered excellent activities. The pool area was outstanding, and the public rooms were very warm and inviting and all had that great view. It definitely was a 5 star hotel. Our only comment that may seem less than enthusiastic was for the food, which was very good but it didn't hit the same high quality mark for this type of hotel. The service in the dining room for breakfast and in the lounge area for the light dinner was outstanding and we felt the "Excellent " rating was still appropriate.

Had a four night stay. Staff are fantastic, room fantastic with amazing views over the lakes. Couldn't fault a thing. Tried out the Sauna and Steam room. Brilliant.

I think this must be one of the top ten hotels in the world

Unforgettable weekend

from A TripAdvisor Member
I recently stayed at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel with my girlfriend for one weekend. It was excellent to say the least. From the moment we arrived, the staff treated us with professionalism and hospitality. They were very friendly with no hint of being pretentious. There was initially a problem with our booking which the staff sorted out quickly and efficiently without the usual million questions attached. High tea was a treat and Fredrick's Restaurant had excellent food. At night the bar staff provided impeccable service and even came around before closing time to take last orders off everyone. The spa was to die for and one of the best we've ever been in, our only gripe being that it was almost fully booked for the weekend that we couldn't get the treatments we wanted. Still, the staff were obliging and managed to squeeze us in without much of a fuss. Their treatments 2 weeks ahead. The views from our room was just amazing and Sunday morning breakfast served in the room with a view of the lakes is unforgettable.

An excellent hotel - food and service was superb. One of the best hotels I have ever stayed in - and I have stayed in many across the world! Friendly staff who could not do enough to help - as I was at the hotel at the same time as the previous comment I have difficulty comprehending what their expectations of a hotel are!

Top Local Tips for Killarney

Stay here Eat as mcuh of the food and see as much as the views while you can

Muckross House Muckross House and environs is fantastic. Spend as long as you can there- lots to see and do, just ambling about. Great facilities there. Don't be put off by crowded carpark- there's so much space you won't feel cramped. Also, although it's a cliche, the jaunting cars are great fun. Weather is inclement- just get out in a raincoat anyway!

weather bring a raincoat and gloves.
