Very Nice Hotel but expensive for what you get. Just another overpriced hotel.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel

Nice stay

from MrsK
Stayed here in May for 2 nights, B&B & 1 dinner. Room was decent size, location very central & both the breakfasts & the dinner were good. Kilkenny is a lovely city, toured the castle & walked around. Would recommend this hotel for a short break.

An ok hotel.

This hotel was not what I expected when I heard that it was a four star hotel in Kilkenny. The beds were nice, and the breakfast was good. BUT. The place is impossible to find without asking for directions from someone in the street. It's down an alley that looks like a pedestrian way. The room was very hot, but they were able to provide a fan on request. The breakfast ordering procedure was also a bit confusing for us. It was the most expensive hotel we stayed on this trip, but I didn't like it the most. We were somewhat limited on where we could stay, however, due to a bank holiday that weekend. The location was nice, however, as we were able to easily walk to a pub for dinner.

t listen to the negative reviews

We stayed at the Kilkenny Ormonde on arrival in Ireland and were a bit apprehensive based on some of the negative reviews on this site. All I can say is the beds were extremely comfortable (just what you want for your jet-lagged body). The staff could not have been more cooperative: they let us in the room hours early, they went out of their way to accomodate our requests. The hotel is extremely well located in the center of Kilkenny, a few steps from the castle but on a side street. The food wasn't fantastic but it was very good. We had a family of six in two adjoined rooms. Forget those negative reviews, this is a great place to stay in Kilkenny, you won't be disappointed.

They should have paid me to stay here

Stayed for one night and it was one night too many. They gave us the wrong room - upon calling - they said - we are so sorry - we will be right up to take you to the right room. We waited 1/2 hour - no response. Went down to the desk where they proceeded to act all surprised and handed a different room key and sent us on our merry way. The whole time we are pulling luggage ourselves. The rate included breakfast the next morning. The food was so bad my daughter had to sign us out as I was almost vomiting in the lobby. Never again - not in this lifetime.

We Loved it.....

My boyfriend and I have just returned from a weekend away in this hotel. We found the staff really friendly and helpfull. Our package included two nights B&b with one evening meal and we found it to be excellent value for money. Our evening meal was in Fredricks and the food was gorgeous. The hotel is located in a perfect spot in the city easy access to everything that you could need. When we arrived there was a wedding reception taking place I was a bit nervous about this as other reviews said that the noise from the function rooms was intolerable but we didnt find it to be a problem. The leisure centre was really spacious and clean. Overall I would say that this hotel is one of the nicest ive stayed in and do not be put off by other reviews go and make up your own mind.

What a terrable hotel

We stay in this hotel during the Kilkenny Arts Festival, the festival was fantastic, the city is beautiful, but this hotel is the worst we have ever stayed in, the staff are not helpful and very unfriendly, the food and service were average but the noise from the nite club and function suites was intolerable.

Hmm, plusses and minuses

We, a couple in our thirties, spent a weekend in the Ormonde a while ago and for the first time I feel compelled to write a review:

- They did not have our room as they had made a typo that said we would arrive on Sunday (for a weekend special...). Only when I produced their confirmation email did they believe me. They found a room, but it was not non-smoking as specially requested and confirmed by email earlier. When I said I am allergic they got mad at me, trying to say there are no rooms (as if it was my mistake). However, I kept at it and they found a room in 5 minutes... I asked if it was at a quiet part of the hotel as promised. She looked at me as if I was stupid and said there are no quiet rooms as it is the Arts Festival Weekend (she was getting agitated at this stage). I do know that, but I was talking about the nightclub and function rooms which are indescribably noisy. We arrived at our room and opened the window to find the airconditioning equipment or something of the hotel under the window (no aircon in the rooms though) and indeed inside the walls of our hotel room. The noise isn't quite as bad as a street drill, but not far from it. At this stage we had to laugh as this was something I had planned for weeks and was supposed to be special.

Next morning I went to the gym and back in two minutes as it was freezing there and the music was too loud, but thats just me, nothing wrong with it if you are Irish and used to cold temperatures inside. Went back wanting a hot shower, but there was only cold water as the boiler had burst. Had to take a cold one to make it ot breakfast.

There was no toiletbrush and one was promised, but never came. Sorry to be disgusting, but you can imagine the toilet after two days.

+ The food in Fredericks was excellent and the Polish waiters were lovely.
+ Breakfast is nice.
+ Nice lounge.

All in all, we had a great time in Kilkenny, but the hotel was a letdown. No way you could compare it to a 4 star hotel anywhere else in the world. Have a look at the breakfast tables underneath the cloth...

Reception would do with a few older people with adequate life experience to have some empathy. I would not have minded the messup in the least if it had been dealt with in a nice way.

Friendly staff but not too much attention to detail

I stayed mid week at the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel and had a pleasant experience overall. There were a few issues which I thought needed attention. Some of the lamps in my room had no bulbs! The lack of air conditioning was disappointing, especially in Earls bistro. The service in the bistro was pretty poor, I was left waiting 45 minutes for my dessert!! Staff were friendly but there seemed to be a bit of a staff shortage. I would return, but not in the middle of summer, my room was terribly hot.

Excellent Hotel, Excellent Location, but a bit noisey!

My Wife and I stayed in the hotel for the August Bank holiday weekend, We checked in on Saturday afternoon and were a little dissappointed that we could not get a table in the restaurant until after 9PM, When we did eventually get to eat it was worth the wait!! the food was to die for, Service was excellent.

We also used the leisure centre while staying at the hotel and found it very clean and the staff very friendly. Killkenny is a great town to stay in with plenty to see and do.

My only gripe is that we stayed directly above the hotel Disco which was very noisey up to about 3am. I would advise that people request to stay on the far side of the hotel away from the disco below.

Complimentry Presidiantial Suite. Nice One!!

Booked a "Romantic Package" for my boyfriends birthday in mid July. it was meant to cost 279 each for 2 nights accommodation in a deluxe room, with full breakfast in bed both mornings, champagne and strawberrys on arrival, bouquet of flowers for the lady, bathrobe and slippers and scattered rose petals with a turndown service, plus dinner in Fredericks Restuarant with a complimentary bottle of house wine. It turned out that when we arrived on the friday to check in the put us up in the Presidential Suite, one of 5 in the hotel, all complimentary. It was gorgeous, it was like a proper apartment, we had our own balcony, seperate bedroom with king size bed, seperate sitting area, luggage room, kitchen, huge bathroom. The bar in the hotel was grand, they did nice bar food, and the restaurant in the hotel was good too, excellent service by the staff. All in all, it was a lovely experience, Kilkenny is a great city with plenty of pubs and things to do. I'll be looking to go back for my birthday in September.
