Historical Traveller Reviews of Kenmare Bay Hotel

Really cool rooms. Will look forward to coming back again

from Rocketman780
Just stayed a few days ago during the June bank holiday weekend in their new rooms, abolutely amazing. According to the really friendly recetionist, Natalie, they are doing up the rest of the hotel as well. By far the best value in Kenmare which is a beautiful Irish town. Loads of day trips around including the awesome Ring of Kerry. Will definitely recommend and go back myself.

Very enjoyable

I normally never book anywhere without reading Tripadvisor reviews first but I'm very glad I didnt on this occasion because the negative ones would have prevented me from booking. I've just returned from 3 nights at the Kenmare Bay Hotel and I have to say that I would stay there again. Sure, it's not 5 star and it's not plush. If you want that, then there's the Sheen Falls or the Park and you can pay an absolute minimum (if there are special offers) of 110 Euro extra per person sharing per night if you need all the things they have to offer. For the price we paid, which was 45 Euro per person bed and breakfast, I really cant fault the place. As we drove towards it and saw the building site we wondered if the bargain rate was because we were in a roofless room! But, fear not, this is an addition to the existing hotel (extra rooms & swimming pool). As others have said, it is a very dated building from the outside. Presumably, this will, in time, be done up to match the new wing. When we checked in, the girls on reception were fantastic. Our booking was confusing as we were part of a group booking for the second night but they had it sorted efficiently and quickly - something you dont come across too often these days. Our room was a good size and spotlessly clean. No minibar but there is tea/coffee making facilities. No iron (we had brought our own anyway) but I would imagine it could be borrowed. There is a hairdryer in the room. The beds were fine. Not the comfiest I've slept in but certainly not the worst either. There's no lift but we saw there was a porter there if you needed help with your bags. The breakfast was excellent. A buffet style with a good choice of cereals, yogurts, and juices; hot breakfast had rashers, sausage, black pudding, scrambled or poached eggs, mushrooms, beans, etc and was very, very tasty. The staff were all pleasant and the tea/coffee/toast were all brought quickly. We didnt need to go looking for anything. The hotel bar is quite small but well run. The porter will open it up if you want a nightcap when you come back from the town (residents can drink till 2.30 a.m). We had dinner which was part of a function on Saturday night and the food was pretty good. It was nothing out of the ordinary (for that, we went to Packies the night before!) but, as hotel food (plus being a function) goes, it was tasty and, again, the staff were great. We enquired about ordering wine from one of the waitresses who got the wine waiter to sort this out. She also came back to us about 10 minutes later to make sure we had been looked after. We were moved to the function room upstairs for the dancing. The only gripe we would have had all weekend was that the bar up there wasnt very well stocked but we still managed to accumulate a hangover so it can't have been that bad! As for the location of the hotel, it's walkable into town and takes about 10 minutes. It was dry so we chose to walk in on the Sunday morning but ended up getting soaked to the skin so pack a brolly! At night (again, it was raining), we got a taxi into town which was 5 Euro. Beautiful peacocks walk freely around the place. They can squawk quite loudly at times! There is also ample parking. All in all, we really enjoyed our weekend. In fact, we hadn't intended to but booked in again for the Sunday night.

The relaxed atmosphere is unique.

I stayed recently in this hotel when I saw a special deal in the paper. When I drove up the road it looked at first like a building site but then I parked and a feeling of calm came over me.Just sitting in the car gave a sense of relaxing that is unique. The hotel is quite dated in the reception area but staff are nice and their is no panic about anything.Food was fine and rooms were good.I have to say I came away refreshed. It was almost as if I had been to a spa,.... but hadn't.I do recommend this to people who want a break ,.. to chill out.Paul.

Happy Days

Just spent a weekend in the kenmare hotel and had a great time.Stayed with 5 other mates and all had good times. They dropped us into town when the taxi didn't arrive for no charge. The rooms were grand and the breakfast nice.Didn't have dinner.I'll be back when the pool is built in the winter. The peacocks are nice but noisey if you have a sore head.John.

At Kenmare Bay Hotel

Had a great stay at the Kenmare Bay Hotel, they are doing extensive work on the grounds but this did not make a difference to the stay. The staff were super friendly, couldn’t do enough for us, the food was amazing, nothing like “Hospital Food” at all. The restaurant was a little cooler than normal but this was fixed almost immediately. The hotel does look a little dated from the front but this all going to be changed with the work going on. We are very happy with our stay and will go back again

Great time at the Kenmare Bay!

I was really surprised to read the previous reviews. I use the Trip Advisor all the time to help make bookings and had used the comments on the Kenmare Bay for our booking last weekend and found the staff, the hotel, the meal and the bar great. I met a group of Bridge players who all enjoyed their stay and we had a great time at Breakfast on Sunday morning. The Hotel is undergoing refurbishment but this did not affect our stay at all and I'll be defintely be going back.

Utterly disgraceful

Absolutely shocking. Worst hotel experience ever! Dinner served in freezing cold restaurant. People had to wear their jackets while eating. Totally unprofessional with staff unable to locate a corkscrew for 10 minutes.

Final straw was the ice cold breakfast brought to our room. Our weekend stay quickly turned into a one night stay. Avoid at all costs

I would not advise anybody to stay in this place, it falls far below the rating, the premises are '70's like and cleanliness to be desired. Musty smell in parts of the hotel. Dinner was similar to bad hospital food. Honestly and without a doubt the worst place I've ever stayed in and we're not 5* regulars.

We just loved Kenmare, very pleasant stay

After booking a night in the Kenmare Bay for 10th December I really didn’t have too high of an expectation as we got such a good deal at €25 per person, but upon arrival I must say we greeted with friendly, welcoming yet professional staff. A somewhat dated reception area but the room was only perfect. We stayed in one of the front facing rooms with panoramic views of the mountains and looking out on the gardens and the unusual special guests of the Kenmare bay, the Kenmare bay Hotel Peacocks. The hotel is only minutes walk from the centre of Kenmare where we ate in Packies Restraunt, which served really great food in a relaxed pub like atmosphere, truly one of Irelands nicest towns. After our meal we returned back to the hotel we decided to have one more drink only to find the cosiest little bar ever with a big open real fire and a great pint of Guinness. The next morning before our departure we decided to go for the breakfast, which was just top class, you can’t beat a good fry! Although a bit dated I do believe it undergoing a full revamp including a new leisure centre, so I have to say that the Kenmare Bay Hotel will definitely be seeing us again!

Right Quality and right price at Kenmare Bay Hotel

On a recommendation from a friend we headed to Kenmare for a short weekend break in November. We booked into the Kenmare bay hotel as there was a cheap deal going for 2 nights with 1 dinner. I have to say our first impressions of the building weren’t great but once we got inside things got much better. The staff I have to stay were very nice and up to Sunday morning when we checked out they couldn’t do enough. Rooms were comfy and clean, bar was cosy and the food although basic really was well cooked and tasted great. Kenmare was a really top town and on our first night we ate in a great restaurant called ‘The Horseshoe’, which was recommended to us by a very competent male receptionist. It really was amazing. We will certainly return to Kenmare and to the Kenmare Bay Hotel, they tell me that in a year they’ll have a leisure centre, we look forward to our next visit.

Top Local Tips for Kenmare

food There are many fantastic eateries in Kenmare and I would definitely make time to visit a few as they all have comprehensive affordable lunch and dinner menues.

For the Kids My kids are getting older now but when we did go away on breaks as a family I never would have thought of bringing them to Kenmare but in actual fact I think kids would love it. Theres a great water park out the road called starsailing, there is the show which is suitable for all ages, when we were there, there was a large group of young americans who attended and loved it. Theres some great pubs for the older teenagers with great live music!!

night life If you don't drink, don't come to Ireland
