Sound proofing is bad hall noise is transmitted to rooms. Sign on Bathroom wall "Do Not Drink Tap Water without Boiling" I have never seen this in a hotel. Was concerned about drinking any water in Ennis. BAD Mold around the Bathtub and rusted chains on the stoppers for sink and tub. Should learn about bleach to help eliminate the mold. Staff is very good and food is very good if you can get past the don't drink the water signs.

Historical Traveller Reviews of ynch Best Western West County Hotel

Thoroughly enjoyable stay

from FionaV25
I was actually looking for reviews on another hotel that I intend to stay in when I came across the bad reviews for this hotel and felt I had to respond.

I stayed at the West County last month with my boyfriend and we found none of the problems that have been mentioned on other reviews. From the moment we checked in until the moment we checked out, the staff in this hotel did every thing possible to ensure we enjoyed our stay. They were very friendly, helpful and polite, and we had quite the laugh one night in the bar with the guest liason. Our room wasn't large, but it was a perfect size for the two of us and it was spotlessly clean.

I'm sorry that other reviewers had such a bad experience because ours was anything but.

Great Weekend

from Rayk1979
My girlfriend and I stayed in this hotel in early July and I have to say our stay was really enjoyable.

When we arrived at reception the receptionist immediately apologised for the disruption caused by the refurbishment, which I hadn't even noticed. Our room was obviously part of the refurbishment as it was clean as a whistle and everything in it was pristine. Breakfast every morning was a treat...eat all you want of cerals, fruit and traditional irish fare.
The leisure centre which has also been refurbished is a good size with a large pool.
Overall our stay was very enjoyable and we will definitely be back.

I stayed in this hotel in November 2005, as part of a "hen-do". We had endless problems with the hotel from the moment we checked in to when we departed. The staff were rude, not very well trained and seemed to have very little interest in the various problems presented to them by the WHOLE group. Of the sixteen ladies booked in not one of us was happy with the hotel. Please, Please, Please look elsewhere for accomadtion in Ennis, Particulary if you are part of a "hen-do". Although they were advised when the booking was made that it was a "hen-do" they made it perfectly clear we were not exactly welcome in the hotel and one particular member of staff asked us not to use the bar in the hotel. Now I know what you are thinking.... a bunch of drunk women but no we were perfectly behaved and as an older bunch of girls not much alcohol was comsumed. There was also an incident of theft in the hotel which the hotel staff were not willing to discuss and we ended up having to contact the local Gardai. A total nightmare from begining to end. The food in the restaurant was nice althought the service was abismal and the staff looked like it should have been them away on a break not us! Rooms were okay but very very basic and very old fashioned. Again, please skip this so called hotel and stay elsewhere. It really is not worth the money and it is really painful on departure when you have to hand over your hard earned cash to the receptionist and pay for the "experience" of staying in such a kip!. I for one will never ever return, and neither will any of the other fifteen girls for that matter! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Great Hotel Great Value

I am suprised to read the other reviews about this hotel and thought that i should share our experience here.
We booked this hotel for 1 night while on a driving trip around south/south west Ireland. It was my girlfriends first time in Ireland.( I am from Tipperary)
We enjoyed this hotel so much we even stayed an extra night.
It is a great base if you are travelling around Co. Clare and on to Galway.
The room we had was tidy and modern, the food and drink was great and cheap, the staff were friendly and helpful.
The pool and gym were great.
If this hotel has come down so much since we visited then it is sad.
We had as nice time there.

Umm!!! Basic and grubby.

I had booked this hotel online for British schools whit week - so could not cancel without loosing my money. I booked and then read reviews on tripadvisor!!!!! I was not looking forward to my stay at this hotel in the least. We were there for 4 nights - oh no!!!!

We picked up the car at Shannon airport and found Ennis easily - a bypass being built so traffic build up is inevitable. We pulled up and parked went into reception. Had a sort of welcome - a smile and where the room was located. On arrival in our non-smoking room we were hit with the smell of cigarettes. I think a small no smoking sticker had been put on the door for our arrival!!!! That evening we had to go out and buy an air freshner as the hotel did not have one - that's how bad the smell was. We were in an old room and it showed. Lots of the rooms had already been refurbished - they are working on it at the moment - workmen all over the place. The leisure area was due to reopen on the 2nd June. This looked great

Breakfast - we really enjoyed this. If you go before 8.30am you get all the coach parties and it is very busy. Go about 9 (breakfast is served until 11.30) and you have individual service. Help yourself to juices, cereals, etc and the cooked breakfast. Eat as much as you want. We filled up here to save on lunch!

The place just needs a REALLY really good clean - the bedrooms, the Irish pub area - all over. The staff were friendly to us but you could tell they had had enough of some guests! Lots of Americans, French and Germans stopping here and noisy cabin crews!!!

We wouldn't go back to this hotel again as there are so many all over the area that looked far superior. Give it a miss if you can find somewhere else.

t bother

I am obliged to stay in hotels a lot, i've seen a few, but nothing prepared me for the nightmare that is the west county ennis. The pool was closed the hotel was being intrusively refurbished, i'm talking noise. but the staff... o man, rude, confrontational and seething with poorly concealed resentment. The hotel obviously makes its dollar from coach parties who're not there long enough to matter. room service takes approx. 4 hours to make it to your room and Basil Fawlty would be embarassed by the open hostility the resturant staff. Really, don't do it.

Having read these reviews before i went to this Hotel i didn't know what to expect but was greatly surprised to find that these comments were an unfair reflection of this Hotel. I attended a conference at the Hotel and found the facilities, staff, food everything excellent. Many a time we tend to just write the bad things and not the good and i can say i would most definiately return and found this to be a traditional style irish hotel which is very must lacking in our new modern Hotels in the country.

Service lacking, hygienically challenged, no warm Irish welcome here!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at this hotel expecting a warm Irish welcome however the staff were not particularly friendly or helpful.

The cooked buffet breakfast was generally cold if available at all. Staff were not tending to their guests needs adequately, quite often we had to go searching for someone to bring tea/coffee/toast etc.

The swimming pool was extremely heavily chlorinated and swimming caps are required to be worn, charging the guests 3.50euro for the privilege.
Each guest is also charged 4.00euro extra during what are termed peak times for the use of leisure facilities. Lockers are NOT secure, if guests wish to secure their belongings a padlock must ALSO be purchased.
The shower area and toilets were not clean, so much so that we showered in our own room.

The public toilets within the hotel, though supposedly checked every 60 minutes smelled disgusting, in fact the odour could be smelled from the corridor and bar area.

There was much misleading information regarding the use of leisure facilities, telephone numbers and the walking distance from Ennis town centre.

The rooms and en-suite facilities were fine however, as was the evening meal in the County Grill.

Go expecting 2* quality/service at best...

Tops

I found the hotel initially large and intimidating, there was a wedding going on and very noisy. Getting to my room two lights did not work and the window was jammed. I went down to reception to complain and met the manager who was standing there, what a nice man, he had every thing sorted out in 3mins flat. If the room still was'nt right he said he would upgrade me to a suite. He had the drinks taken off my bill in the restaurant and the meal was out of this world.
Having breakfast, which was huge the manager turned up, sitting with me for a cup of coffee we chatted about the weather, I think his name was Mr Harrington what a gentleman.

OK Hotel, High Price

from Elleor126
The hotel is ok. The rooms are average. The food is lovely and the leisure facility is nice but quiet undersized. I was there on business, so it was fine for that. As for staying there by choice on vacation, that would be a no, there are plenty of nicer hotels in Ennis, but if hotel is solely a place to sleep while on vacation, its perfect. Shop for your price and you will get a good deal and appreciate it more!

Top Local Tips for Ennis

Beautiful Ennis We found Ennis the most charming town we visited in our Ireland trip - the scale is beautiful, the streets are lively, and the atmosphere friendly and welcoming. We couldn't recommend it more; it's a bit of old Ireland without feeling too touristy.

Where to go Knox's pub and restaurant is great for food and music. The pub has a late bar at the weekends and I would stay there rather than go to the queen's nighclub which is not great to say the least. Its just jammed on Saturday night's and is dirty and the drinks are expensive. It's 10 Euro to get in. O'Halloran's is also a great place to go drinking.

Nightlife in Ennis We were in Ennis for a weekend and the pubs at night just came alive. The food was extremely good and reasonable and the lively pubs with live irish music was great fun.
