I enjoyed my stay at the the Mont Clare, so much so that i stayed again in November 04. The service was excellent, customer care is first class and the rooms are clean and comfortable.

Great Value, Great Location-Recommended

Stayed 28-30th Dec 2005 at the Mont Clare Hotel, Dublin.
It was very clean and comfortable indeed. Made minor requests to staff on two occasions and both were dealt with quickly and in a friendly manner.
The location for the centre of Dublin ie Temple Bar and the Grafton Street shops could not be better (5-10 mins walk away) and the air bus from the airport stops just 30 seconds walk away from the hotels door.
Slightly noisy air conditioning, at times, being the only slight complaint.
The hotel overall lived up to expectations and more.

Hummmm....where to start. The Mont Clare had a great location, Marrion Square, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. However, like many hotels in Europe, the room was quite small, and, although we had requested it well in advance, we could not get a non-smoking room.

The bed was comfortable, but there was no where to put suitcases other than in the closet, which was not so easy to get to. The room was rather strangely arranged with a little round table in the narrow hallway into the room.

The location was excellent, and the staff was very, very helpful. The daily breakfast was not spectacular (compared to other hotels in Ireland where we stayed), but it was quite adequate.

I would not give the hotel more than 2 1/2 to 3 stars, and probably would not use it again.

Decent Enough

Dublin is so incredibly expensive that I was delighted to get such a good deal at the Mont Clare. The location was fine, nice and quiet, though if I could spend more money I would probably stay at the Westin or somewhere a little more central, but certainly not somewhere as noisy at Temple Bar.

The hotel itself had a nice lobby and breakfast, but the rooms definitely needed some updating. We had a suite with a large King Bed, the room was really large and actually had character. At the same time, the drapes and furniture were worn. Overall the hotel was very clean though.

Convenient but small with a good bar

Hotel is in an okay location with a very small room. The staff was very friendly, and we were lucky to find a room in Dublin on Friday and Saturday night without a reservation. We got a great corporate deal of 65 Euro each person. The room was big enough to house two twin beds, but it was clean and quiet. The parking is free, even though it's only two blocks away...but that was no big deal. The bar in the hotel was fun, and the bar food was okay, too, in case you don't feel like venturing out. It's kind of a few blocks from the main area, but that's okay because it's quiet. It's only about a 10 minute walk to Stephen's Green and 15 minutes from Temple Bar area, but a cab is not expensive at all. I wouldn't mind staying there again, but I might try to stay closer to the shopping area near the Fitzwilliam Hotel next time if the price was right. But, this was fine.

Not the Greatest

The hotel car park was located about two blocks away. There was no iron/board in the room as expected.

The bathroom outlets were designed for electric shavers only. Not much help for a woman who curls her hair. The lighting in both the bathroom and main room was terrible.

The bed was uncomfortable to say the least.

One night was more than enough.

Good Location

We were pleased with the location of this hotel. The bus from the airport dropped us off almost right in front of it. Easy walk to Temple Bar area for restaurants, pubs, etc and close to the bus area for the Hop On/Off buses. The hotel itself was okay - nothing great but clean. The elevator was broken the night we stayed but we were on the second floor so not a big deal to us but we heard others that were on higher floors complaining.

On reflection, this was amongst the most appealing hotels I have ever stayed in. The location on Merrion Square is excellent, affording easy access to the city centre and national gallery. The square itself is attractive and characterful; it's worth taking a walk around it to read the plaques commemorating illustrious residents of the past. Our room was attractively furnished and of a good size. The breakfast was excellent and the dining room very attractive in itself. We visited the bar attached to the hotel on one occasion and found this to be convivial and inviting. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and will certainly stay here again when I return to Dublin.

Noise from street unbearable

We were in room 252 and went to sleep and woke up to street noise constantly. The first night, we thought the window was left open because of all the noise, but realized it was shut! We could actually hear every word the tour guide was telling visitors on the city tour bus.... and our windows were shut. Also, the elevator was broken one day and everyone had to use the stairs on this 5 story building. There were no face cloths at this hotel! I asked a couple staying at another O'Callaghan owned hotel across the street and they too said they didn't get face cloths. The maid said they just don't have them to give out. The room was also very small, but that's expected with European hotels. The bathroom was tiny. Breakfast was okey here. My husband and I attended a conference and got a group rate of 197 euros for a king size bed. This Merrion Square location was ideal for Trinity College and the tour buses were across the street along with city buses making it easy to get around.

The Mont Clare is located just off Merrion Square and is a 10 minute walk to Grafton Street and Trinity College. The National Art Gallery and National History Museum are just across the road from the hotel. For those of you arriving by air, there is an Aircoach bus stop just 50 yards down the road.

The hotel itself is very nice, I would say it was 4 star rating. We only stayed one night, the room rate was 155 EUR for a double which included a rather nice full Irish breakfast! The room we had was on the 5th floor overlooking other buildings but on the opposite side to Merrion Square. The room itself was very small with barely enough space to move around in but it was nicely decorated and clean.

I would definately recommend staying here as the location is great and the price not too bad for hotels in the city centre of Dublin.

My family and I have just returned from a trip around Ireland. While in Dublin we stayed at the Mont Clare Hotel and loved it. While the rooms are on the small side they are very clean and nicely decorated. The location was wonderful and allowed us to walk to many of the attractions we wanted to see along with having the tour bus stop across the street. Parking was tricky so I wouldn't recommend having a car while staying here (although they do provide off site parking). The location was also very child friendly. We traveled with my son who is 11 months and had no problems.

Top Local Tips for Dublin

Bus Passes If staying in the center of Dublin, don't purchase a bus pass for local travel. The buses are slow and don't go directly to tourist destinations. A multi-day hop on/hop off pass will serve you better.

Spend the money take taxi forget about driving in Dublin .Maps don't show one way streets , streets change names sometimes after one block long.Parking is impossible and expensive. Walk and take taxi . Hotel to say Guiness was 10 euro's incl. tip , airport 30 without tip. Save 3 euro's , hail taxi from street , if front desk or bar calls for one , meter adds the 3 euro's $4.00 u.s..

First time drivers It was very difficult for me as a first time "drive on left side of the road" driver to pick up a rental & drive straight into downtown Dublin on a Monday AM. This was arranged by travel agent & definitely not a good idea!
