I stay at the Gate regularly, at least four times a year. The price is right, and you get what you pay for, no more, no less. Staff are friendly, especially at breakfast, and they don't pretend to be anything other than a budget hotel. I always find the room clean, tidy and comfortable.. although the carpets could do with a clean... they smell a bit sometimes.. however, all in all, The Gate "does exactly what it says on the tin"..
Not really bad, but not a good place either...

For Dublin, maybe it is quite cheap, but it's quite expensive for what it actually is. Room is average, bedding less than average, and it lookes as though cleaning had not been done in a couple of months. Worst of all, never ever take a room on 1st floor, because the hotel is just above a pub with extremly loud rock music until 3 am...
On the good side, breakfast is good and abundant, staff is friendly. But next time, I'll try another hotel!
Does not pretend to be anything else

Just stayed at The gate for St Patrick's day and this has been our fourth stay. Each year we have noticed improvements to the decor etc. Sure there is always room for improvement but for the price it is just right. The breakfast is just right and the welcome always cheerful. We look forward to many more stays.

Have been staying at The Gate Hotel for many years on and off, when im passing through Dublin or there for concerts, work, etc, I have to say the staff, are extremely helpful, patient and kind.
The Rooms are perfect and at a cost effective price. The Gate Hotel is situated in a very accesible area, right off O'Connell street, which is at the heart of the city centre. No long walks to bus stations, trains stations, luais or the shops. A perfect choice.
A tranny's delight

Despite being a double incontinent those "blarney" lads never lost their enthusiasm for carrying me up and down their stairs in my wheelchair. Considering I am a pre-op TS their levels of service were second to none. I encountered no predjudice and thank them from the bottom of my trousers.
Budget at it's best.

We stayed in the Autumn of 2001 and it was simply divine. The staff friendly, the breakfasts ample and hearty and the rooms basic but perfectly functional. For a cheap Dublin treat, it can't be missed.

Top Local Tips for Dublin

dublin bus The Airlink bus will take you into the centre of Dublin passing most of the major hotels. A return ticket is 11euros. This bus is every 20 minutes and is very much cheaper than the taxis. We used it for the first time this year and shall use it again in the future. P.S This ticket also lets you travel anywhere in a 25 mile radius of the city, hopping on and off, for 5 days.

Dublin Sightseeing City Tour Buy your Dublin Sightseeing City Tour Hop on/Hop off Bus ticket online and get a 20% discount. You can turn in your e-ticket for the bus vouchers just two blocks from this hotel. And stop number 1 is just one block away. This bus has live tour guide/drivers, which are really funny. Way better than the red buses with the audio headsets.

Eliza Blues, Wellington Quay The restaurant 'Eliza Blues' is on the river Liffey (on Wellington Quay, on the same side of the Liffey as Temple Bar) The food is fantastic, and I'd really recommend it to anyone.
