Historical Traveller Reviews of Davenport Hotel
Very solid 4 star hotel
from Mike_N_AtlantaGreat location - across the street from Merrion Park, a block to Trinity College, a couple blocks to St. Stephens Green, and about a 5-10 minute walk to Temple Bar. Area is very quiet at night, some traffic during the day although its not as bad as the area around Temple Bar and the Quays (Dublin is jammed with traffic). Self parking in a secure garage a block down the street is free, valet is also available for 10 Euros.
Cons: Missing a mini-bar in the room, a decent fan in the bathroom and top notch furnishings. The only thing that keeps me from giving 5 stars though was the mattress. It was comfortable and I slept like a rock, but it wasn't particularily new and seemed to have a bit of an indentation toward the middle (I noticed the same thing at The Alexander, same ownership, across the street). The furniture was nicer than at the Alexander, above average overall, but the room was a bit smaller. Breakfast was good, better than at the Alexander, but still overpriced at 13.5 Euro, unless you're a big eater.
Summary: Definitely worth it for up to about 170 Euro a night, depending on the dates you stay. After that, you may want to shop around and compare. Internet saver fares (prepay only) on the O'Callaghan website of Euro 110 are a steal if available.
Compares favorably with The Alexander (across the street and run by the same company). The main difference being that The Alexander has a bit more of an impressive lobby and common area - maybe slightly better for business, and slightly larger rooms. The Davenport may be a tad bit older, have a tad bit smaller rooms, and be a tad bit noiser due to location and set up of the building and rooms, but it has more character and is a bit more intimate. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again if the rates were decent.
Almost Fault-free
from FearnanGleannThe hotel has a terrific location for the city centre and is also within walking distance of Lansdowne Road Rugby Stadium which was the purpose of our visit!
The front entrance looks good and the front hall is large clean and welcoming. The bedroom was excellent - spacious, clean nicely furnished and with good (adjustable) temperature controls. Staff of all levels were among the most helpful and friendly that I have ever encountered. We were only staying one night and wanted to eat at a particular restaurant so I can only comment on breakfast. The food quality and variety were excellent.
So why only "Almost fault-free"? Three things:
Despite my comments on breakfast I felt that it was way too expensive at almost 15 Euros.
The hotel parking is too far away and quite difficult to find.
On one side of the hotel there is a bar. Due to the smoking ban, it is now quite common for bars to have a small terrace which accommodates smokers. The noise from the terrace at this bar went on quite late and despite the fact that our window was closed we could still hear it.
Despite these minor complains, I would stay again - just not on the side of the building that adjoins Fenian Street!!
Overall my wife was most impressed as my hotel picking has been known to leave a little to be desired from time to time!! (This time I got it right which helped her cope with the disappointment of her brothers team losing their rugby match).
Stay at the Davenport - you'll love it. Oh and by the way, book direct on their own web site. We got our room at 50% discount - on a Saturday night!
Loved it!
from lilybeeGlasgowOne of the airport coaches stops just steps away from the door - another plus.
Highly recommended!

from mcd63I would definitely recommend and would stay there again. Last time in Dublin, I stayed at The Shelbourne which was also very nice, but the rooms here were much larger and also quieter.
Ideal Location and very friendly Atmosphere
from Hope4SunThe breakfast buffet selection is varied and very good the lounge/bar has a great and lively atmosphere. The room was very spacious and clean, very well equiped and a nice bright bathroom.
Would higly recommend staying here and will again i'm sure, the Air Bus stop is just around the corner from the Air Port as well so save on the Taxi fares and take the bus.
Wonderful hotel - highly recommended
from Todd_WhitehurstThe location is pretty good, very close to Trinity College but a bit of a hike to Temple Bar and the shopping areas. However, it is a very safe area, and we did walk everywhere.
We arranged for a babysitter ahead of time with the hotel staff, and we indeed had a wonderful babysitter each night. Both of them worked in the hotel on other nights, so they were very familiar with the staff, and they took our daughter on a tour of the hotel, which she loved.
Davenport is fab!

Great little restaurant For a nice dinner in Dublin, and not overly expensive (dinner for two with wine and tip--150euros), the Town Bar and Grill, 21 Kildare Street, is highly recommended.
Driving in Dublin Driving in Dublin is difficult because most of the street signs are on the buildings and street names change from block to block without warning. Get a GPS if you intend to drive. It will save lots of frustration.
