Historical Traveller Reviews of Gresham Metropole Hotel

Classic hotel

from ManUtdfan
This is a venerable hotel just a few blocks from the center of town. It was recently renovated and is in very good shape. We got a good Internet deal on it, which made it better. It was a sizeable room, with good beds, and a nice bathroom with good amenities. We had a view of the river (with a litlle neck-twisting), but the window was a bit small. The bad part of our one-night stopover was that it was hot, hot, hot in the room. For some reason, we did not alert staff at the time, and they were quite apologetic the next day. Given that it was a good hotel with good service, I am sure they would have seen to fixing the problem. Anyway, my teenage son and I would recommend this hotel.

Fabulous Hotel In A Great Location

from phyl_d
Stayed at this hotel in the centre of cork for a 3 night break, although the room was not large it was clean and had been recently refurbished, the bathroom was a good size and spotlessly clean. The staff could not do enough to help you nothing was a problem, and the reception staff were more than happy to give you advice on sightseeing. The restaraunt over looking the river served a good table d hote menu and the food and service couldnt be faulted although would recommend more for adults rather than family's. The secure car park round the corner was a bonus and unlike many other hotels there was no charge. The leisure centre was well equiped although you must wear a swim cap which you had to purchase for 2 euros and unfortunately the local members were saying that the leisure centre was to be knocked down at the end of the year and more rooms built in it's place. Definately a great hotel for a break in a very friendly city!

Friendly Cork

We have just returned from a stay at the Gresham Metropole in Cork. The hotel was lovely and the staff were very friendly. We took advantage of the special offer of a three night DBB break for 139 euros per person. This was excellent value for money. The food was great. The bar was nice and prices were reasonable. Travelled down to the coast and can recommend Kinsale. Also visited the wonderfull English Market in Cork City and can heartily recommend the Balcony Cafe there which was excellent. Lovely trip, lovely people.

Great for Short Breaks

from MacLeicesterUK
We stayed at the Gresham Metropole in Cork on a short break deal and had a fantastic time. All the staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for you.

Great plus is that car parking is included in the cost of your stay. Car park is just around the corner at the back of the Hotel.

The room was on the small side but very clean and the bathroom was a very good size. The TV and the furniture seemed new and there was an iron and ironing board in the wardrobe. Bed was very comfortable and being November (although we did have lovely weather) it did get very cold at night and the the radiator could be put onto full which made it very cosy.

The reception/lounge area of the Hotel is showing its age a bit but is still very comfortable and a great place to sit for coffee after your meal or for a nightcap at the end of the day.

The breakfast was plentiful with a buffet style so that you can have as much as you wish. The dinners were also very good with plenty of food however, you do have to like mashed potatoes but that seems to be the case for all of the restaurants etc in Eire. You can always ask for an alternative and they are happy to try to accommodate your wishes.

The Hotel is in a good location near the river Lee and only a few minutes walk from the Centre. Gallagher's on the corner serves the best pint of Guinness we had during our stay.

All in all we would rate this Hotel very highly and would not hesitate to go again or recommend the Metropole to anyone else.

Very enjoyable stay

Pros - central location, free secure car parking, friendly and helpful staff, excellent breakfast. Cons - poor view from room.

What a letdown...

from Emma_F2
We stayed at the Gresham Metropole for two nights. I found one member of staff in particular very unhelpful. We arrived at 9.30pm and enquired if the hotel was still serving food to which we were told no. When we got into our room we saw that there was a menu saying that food was served until 11pm! In order to get to the car park you have to pull up in a car parking space outside and go into reception to get a ticket for the secure car park, which is down the street. When I went in to get the ticket I asked if I could check in while I was there to which the receptionist very curtly replied 'No. Park the car first'. I wouldn't mind but all I had to do was sign a form and then take the bags in after we had parked properly. It wasn't as though we were blocking people outside. We were parked in a ligitimate space. I found her to be very rude.
The lobby of the hotel was not hoovered and very shabby. The room was tiny. There was onlt enough room for the bed and 2 lockers with no room whatsoever the far side of the lockers. I didn't even have room in the bedroom to open out my suitcase properly. The bathroom was in working order but there was milldew and limescale everywhere. It was the most dissappointing hotel stay ever. The Gresham in Cork certainly doesn't live up to its name. And I wouldn't mind if it was cheap....but it wasn't! I have spoken to friends of mine in Cork who have since told me of the terrible reputation the Gresham Metropole has..if only I had asked them before we went to stay there.

There are better options

from A TripAdvisor Member
While planning this trip I was looking forward to staying in this hotel. I am not too much of a picky traveller, but when I pay for an above average hotel room I do not expect the furnishings to be worn down, the bed to be sagging in the middle, paint peeling off of the wall, an extra small room, a lack of adequate lighting, and this is just the sleeping area. Moving into the bathroom I was surprised to see the sad state of affairs. Yes, the mirror, sink, and toilet were in good working condition, but after a day of sightseeing or travelling, you want to step into a nice clean shower. This shower had too many hard to reach places which caused mildew build-up and the smell that comes with it. I don't blame the cleaning staff for it, for I wouldn't even be able to clean the shower. The elevator was tiny, and there were stairs separating the concierge from the elevator making it completely wheelchair inaccessible. The only saving grace was the above average breakfast in the morning - perhaps it seemed better since I was so disappointed with the hotel room. In sum, I believe the hotel has a long way to go to justify charging the prices they do. It does not shed a good light on the Gresham name. I would not stay here again - there are much better options at this price point.

A great hotel, but not the Ritz

from A TripAdvisor Member
I am astounded by the negative reviews of the Metropole on this site. I've stayed there twice in recent years and have always found it clean, good value and the staff perfectly courteous. I mainly chose it for its great location: close to the railway station, yet a handy walk from Patrick Street. You also have some of the best restaurants and bars in town right on the doorstep (Star Anise, Isaac's, Greene's, Dan Lowrey's, Gallaghers), plus a hangover-busting buffet breakfast to look forward to in the mornings. On both weekend stays I found the pool to be all but deserted on a Saturday mid-morning.

What I would fault them on is the lift. It's tiny and painfully slow, so I mostly climbed the three floors to my room.

The Metropole is not by any means the last word in luxury, nor does it pretend to be. But it's a thriving city hotel, in a great location, with reasonable prices. I will continue to stay there on future visits to Cork.

Very disappointing service from the Metropole

from Bryno
A visitor to my workplace booked Gresham Metropole for a two night stay.
You won't believe what happened, but it didn't surprise me. The Metropole is not a hotel I would recommend to anyone.
When she arrived late (about midnight), they told her they could not give her the room because there was a problem with it. They sent her to another hotel close by which happens to be of a much less standard to the metropole. Because the visitor had never been in cork before she did not know any different. She really disliked the second hotel.
When I contacted the metropole the next morning on her behalf they told me that the reason they could not give her the room was that the 'gentleman' who was previously in the room had asked to extend his stay. We were livid. (We wondered had it been a woman who had asked to extend her stay, how she would have fared)However I have to say that the duty manager did handle it very well and organised a room for her second night in the Met. He did not charge her for the first night either. The bottom line though, is that they gave her room away which she had booked and had a ref number for.
Even after all that, she said it was not a good hotel and that it was not up to the standards that would normally be expected by staff in her company.

A loverly hotel in a good location

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed there for three nights, the end of June. I can not fault the hotel, every thing was fine. It was near all the attractions and shops, and you could eat over looking the river. We moved on to Dublin and were booked into what I can only describe as the Hotel from Hell, Browns. We felt like crying after being in a loverly hotel in Cork. We refused the room and the replacement in what I call the cellar and booked at once into the Gresham on O'Connel Street, again an A1 hotel. If you are doing Cork and Dublin, book into both, you wont be disappointed.
