Very old and in a lousy location unless all you want to do is golf. The furniture in the lounge was old and needed replacement. Beds fair. No air conditioning, except open windows, which was a bit unnerving since we were on the 1st floor! The town was a bit of a walk, and had more betting parlors than I have ever seen in one place! No quaint pubs, just a carnival, with loud, rude teens everywhere.
The food at the hotel was very good though and the staff, especially the evening manager, were very friendly.

With lots of faults, here are my top ones:
- the cot provided had mould all over the mattress (image1);
- the television did not work, was ‘swapped’ and the replacement television was exactly the same (image2);
- the radiator in the bathroom had a wire hanging out of it which was unconnected(image3);
- the lights from the main part of the hotel a were not working and when I finally found my way to my room to phone reception the telephone did not work;
- wires were hanging out of the wall and the plaster on the ceiling had many damp parts;
- the light in the centre of the room was full of dead flies (image4);
- the curtains in the room were hanging off the rail and the windows in the hotel were quite dirty.

I felt that we had been mislead in the fact that this hotel was rated as a 4-Star (by who?), when it should really have been barely a 2 Star. In general I found the hotel and the room to be very sub-standard.

The hotel is very old and some people had complaints about the rooms but the manager is wonderful. The staff was pleasant and the bar is good. Local entertainment was fun.

The food & the staff are fab. We stayed in a lovely room over looking the ocean and even better no extra charge like many other hotels.
I would def recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a great break away

We stayed here as part of a tour group. The drive up to the hotel was gorgeous. It is right on the ocean. There is a golf course around it and a paved walkway to check out the spectacular views. The inside reception area was very large with loads of couches to sit. The couches however were outdated. The dining room was large and clean. Once we made it to our room, I was unimpressed. Our room was very small and looked out into an alley with a fire escape. The ground was littered with all kinds of trash. We could see into the room on the other side of the alley. Some other people on our tour did have larger rooms with some view, but they were not impresseed either. The room was so out of date and in need of major repairs. The armoir was broken and leaning on the wall for support. The bathroom had this heater in it that you couldn't shut off. It was very hot. The shower curtain rod was bent and the inside of the curtain was moldy in spots. The faucets were the kind with seperate hot and cold water taps. The beds sank in when sat on and were too soft and worn out. Our door was closed, but did not close flush, so you can see out into the hall way! Luckily we were here only 1 night.

My feelings about this hotel are mixed - and mainly negative

On the one hand, the hotel does have a good location, a golf course, impressive function rooms and polite staff.

However that's where the good points end in my opinion. Like other reviewers of this hotel, I do not believe it should be a 4 star.

My first bad feeling occurred at reception, when the staff appeared flustered about which room they would give us to meet our booking request. It was like they were not expecting us and when we asked for a room with a view, their comments made us feel that we were lucky to be getting a room at all!

They then called a porter by phone and walkie talkie - no response - so we hauled our own luggage to the room.

The room - while more or less clean, was a very poor standard. You couldn't open the door fully as the bed was in the way. It felt that only one person could move around at a time. To get into the wardrobe, you had to negotiate your way around to the back of a set of drawers which the TV sat upon.

One of the blankets on the bed had big stains on it and parts of the wallpaper was hanging away from the wall (see pictures). The bathroom door was difficult to close fully and near-on impossible to re-open again. There was no toilet-roll holder - looked like it broke off and was not fixed.

One of the reasons we chose this hotel was the availability of a leisure centre. However when I found out that both the Sauna and Steam room were both broken and would not be fixed for several days, I decided not to use it.

We had one evening meal at the hotel which I would describe as just passable. Breakfast was OK.

Without major refurbishment, this hotel should not be classed as a 4 star. In addition, many of the problems with this hotel could be solved if only the management would be more pro-active in identifying and fixing problems, before the guests stumble upon them and find themselves as dissapointed as I am.

Lovely hotel with all the personal touches one would expect of a five star hotel. After a long week of go-go-go in the UK, we decided to do our two night stop over in Bundoran in the Great Northern Hotel.No regrets except we wanted to stay longer...much longer.The guest rooms are a delight to the body and mind.The food is excellent. Hats off to the chef and his staff for his unique version of 'chicken soup' -a true signature dish that looked as good as it tasted. And that was just a starter.
The staff are to be complimented - personalized service at its best.
We'll be back in August 2006 to do it all over again!
This time - my wife and I will start our trip with The Great Northern Hotel Bundoran and end it with them.

Just back from a weekend break and I am glad to report no whinging whatsoever. The food was unreal the staff very friendly. The bar was located just of the lobby the atmosphere and music were just fantastic,never had a nights fun like it in my life
The Breakfast was fantastic and the choice amazing.
Location great right on the sea cliff,with sea views all around,the town was just a 2 minute walk.will be back

A wonderful time was had by all. It’s in a wonderful location; a long cliff walk at the back of the hotel was impressive. Now I have to tell you something, I am a bit of a golf fan and the 18 hole course was a challenge to say the least, you would want to be on target with your drive. The food is very good, better than you would expect from a hotel. The dining room is overlooking the Golf course, so that was a plus for me. Rooms were very good with flat screen TVs that always a plus with me also.

All in all very impressed, good rooms, food, clean hotel, a very good Golf course and good leisure facilities. The best Bundoran has to offer, its well worth a stay.

This hotel is in a lovely setting but high winds kept us from enjoying the location. I would have loved to be able to walk around the outside of the hotel. Our room was small, bathroom only had a shower but the towel warmer was an excellent addition. The lobby and bars were nice. We had a wonderful dinner and breakfast. would like to try this hotel again when the winds are calmer.
