Top Local Tips for Ballybunion

Travel throgh the Dunloe valley If you want to go through the Dunloe Gap the walk from Kate Kearney’s Cottage to the lake at Brandon cottage is about 14 Kms along a well paved road, the organised trips usually continue by boat over to Killarney then bus you back to KKC. The ferry trip seems to be a part of a fixed tour and not available ad hoc if you just turn up, the only alternative is the 14km walk back through the gap, or take a jaunting trap. Alternatively if you want to drive through you can take a route from the south. Leave the Kenmare to Killarney road at Molls Gap; turn left then take the first turn right, a narrow road to the Black Valley, follow that and you’ll eventually drive up and over the pass through the Dunloe Gap, you’ll just have to be prepared to pull over for the pony traps quiet regularly, they keep their pace and don’t expect to give way to cars. We spent three days driving the roads within the ROK as I must admit that I didn’t find the “official” Ring Road around the peninsular all that interesting, the interior is far more scenic and spectacular and for the most part quiet, being far away from where the tour buses can get to.

Spring flowers in May May is a fabulous time to go. The weather was - well Ireland. It rains, it clears up. We had some gorgeous sunny days, but the spring flowers were beautiful. Rhodedendron is a pernicious weed here, but it is lovely when in flower, plus there were bluebells, foxgloves, saxifraga, wild orchids and others that I couldn't name.
