OK for a overnight stay

from KeithWS
I’ve stayed at this modern hotel in the centre of Athlone on several occasions whilst on business in the area. The hotel has a few plus points, one being a large car park and free Internet access, in my opinion both prerequisites for the business traveller. Rooms are of a good standard with nice bathroom and all the other extras you would expect form a 3* Hotel. There is a leisure centre but I have never used it. I have eaten in the restaurant ‘Elements’ on a couple of occasions and I must say the food was average on both occasions. Food is also available in the ‘Quayside’ bar but the menu is limited and they refuse to serve you anything off the main restraint menu even though you may not want to sit in a formal setting etc. The bar is good for socialising and the terrace that overlooks the Shannon is very nice on a summer evening, if it gets a little chilly there are patio heaters. The hotel is in the centre of Athlone so it’s only a short walk to other restaurants or bars but Athlone as very little to offer for the tourist. If you want to visit a traditional Irish Bar try Sean’s, which is over the river and behind the castle, it claims to be the oldest bar in Ireland and is very quaint.

Overall if you are on business or just passing through Athlone the Radisson is OK.

Disappointing trip to the Radisson

from 2708
Myself and my wife booked in for a weekend away. On the Friday night everything was fine little did we know......... On the Saturday morning we were greeted to the most unbelievable breakfast experience similar to that of a backstreet B&B. The staff could not speak English, the two that were on. The food was appalling no choice of hot food for breakfast. Hot beverages for breakfast were a joke a pot of cold coffee was put on the table, even though we had not ordered it. The crockery and cutlery were dirty. The wait for a simple egg was 15 minutes plus a reminder. There was no visible management. I did however meet a rude Duty Manager who told me it would be better the next morning but really did not care and this was obvious by his attitude and demeanour.
Dinner was not great, the service was ok but the food was bland, and again dirty cutlery and crockery. The noise on the corridor during the night should have been tackled by the night management.
On Sunday breakfast we now had 5 staff plus a manager, on departure the DM then said to me was everything ok this morning to your satisfaction and would you like compensation!!!

Some people should not work in the hospitality industry would not recommend this hotel at all, book into a B&B

Very Good hotel with nice staff

from DStu
The rooms are very clean and just the right size for two people. Try to get a river view as the block facing the road can be a little noisy (if you have your window open in the summer).

There is a fantastic decking area overlooking the Shannon River which is great for a snack and a drink.

The reception staff are friendly and very helpful

The only negative is that the bar food is not great and the bar staff are the slowest I have ever met.

a very good hotel

We stayed in this hotel on the last weekend of Septebmer and can only praise the staff and the hotel for execellent service and a wonderful stay. The drawback is the fact that they haven't got any spa facilities in the hotel but otherwise a very nice experience. The restaurant is affordable priced and serves excellent food.

from ALAMB
lovely hotel, got an upgraded room with lovely view over river and boats, room was very big, not as big as suite we also stayed in there, the suites are brillant, flatscreen tv and cd player with frank sinatra already in it, lovely bathrooms and the best buffet breakfast we ever had,,

Not Recommendable

from Honesttom
We arrived on Friday evening 29th September for a conference. We went down to dinner at about 8.45p.m. which was cold!!!!. No body asked if dinner was alright, their only interest was to clean the table and get us out of there as quickly as possible. Next morning I came down to breakfast and had to ask if I could have a fried egg which was not available on the buffet. Having just had breakfast when I noticed a mouse running along the floor and under a service station, I jumped up and left telling one of the staff on my way out who looked at me in amazement. I made a complaint at reception to the Manager on Duty who simply just said "Oh I am sorry" . That morning I also had to leave a note in the bathroom for housekeeping to clean the back of the bathroom door which was dirty from someone who previously had got sick there. Our meal on Saturday night was excellent big difference from Friday night. I got down early to the dining room on Sunday morning and noticed that the dining room floor was dirty. On my check-out I was asked to pay for a receipt that did not belong to me. Nobody asked me if I enjoyed my stay. While at the checkout desk another person was complaining of their bad experience.
I would not recommned this hotel to anyone or would never again stay there.

Radisson - Great Decor, Shame about the food

from TonyJames
Stayed one night at this hotel over the recent August bank holiday weekend. The hotel is new and modern, very clean and well maintained. Family suites are spacious, equipped with 2 televisions which was ideal for us (3yr old and 1 yr old could look at their own programmes) On the downside, there was a lot of noise on the fifth floor during the night. We were woken three times by people banging doors etc. Also, the beds were extremely uncomfortable. The leisure centre was excellent and pool attendant very helpful. Hotel is centrally located and shops/local restaurants are all a short stroll away. The major disappointment was the food. Dinner in 'Elements' restaurant was only OK - menu was limited and the service was slow. For example, we got our main course, but had to remind waitress for our vegetables etc. This is annoying. Buffet breakfast had a good selection of breads/fcereals/juices etc but hot buffet food was not good - major problems here guys! Scrambled egg looked in need of some attention! In my opinion, buffet breakfasts are more 'quantity' that 'quality'. Paying 225 euro per night B&B, I would like to be served with a good quality freshly cooked breakfast which is hot - not lukewarm and dried out.

First Class hotel for families

from Aingeal
As someone with a 'large' family I often find it difficult to find hotels that provide family rooms. Even when I book a family room we often arrive to find a room that is overcrowded with beds, offering no space to move around, and inevitably resulting in an uncomfortable stay. This, thankfully, was not the case with the family suites offered in the Radisson in Athlone. The suites consist of two large rooms with a very large double bed(seemed like king-size) in one room and a sofa bed in the other. An added bonus was two T.V.s - a plasma screen in the main bedroom. The large bathroom has a bath and separate shower. Bathrobes and lots of additional toliteries were provided and there were plenty of towels - another detail that is often overlooked. My husband took the children to the pool while I was out for the day and they were very happy with the facilities offered. The breakfast buffet is extensive and seemed to cater for all tastes. The staff are extremely helpful allowing my husband and children to check-in at 10.30 while I was at a meeting elsewhere (Check in is officially 3pm!). We stayed in the Radisson in June and will certainly be making a return visit whenever we are in the midlands again.

Five star four star!

from Contio
Please note: I have given five stars to this hotel not because it is a five star hotel, but because as a four star hotel it does everything such a hotel should do. This was my first visit, and I only stayed one night, but I was extremely pleased, and shall certainly return. I have no criticisms at all, and would like to mention the following things I liked:
1. The fabulous view over the river Shannon towards the castle and imposing classical Church on the west side of the town. Do pay the extra 10 euros for a room which looks over the water!
2. The fact that these rooms face west, which means a nice sunset in the evening, and nice dark mornings for sleeping!
3. Very comfortable room; crisp white cotton on the bed; wireless broadband free of charge; kettle, iron and ironing board, safe; excellent desk and desk lamp, which makes for a superb working environmnet.
4. Very quiet in the room; I had a great sleep, and woke refreshed.
5. Buffet breakfast had very good fruit; bacon, eggs etc were quite adequate, but these things are never at their best from a buffet, are they?
6. Otherwise I didn't eat in the hotel, since I generally avoid hotel food. But there are many good places to eat in Athlone. On this trip I had a fine dinner in Ireland's best Thai restaurant, Kin Khao.
7. Fitness centre is better than many I have seen in five star establishments. Great pool, sauna, and steam room too.
8. Staff were pleasant and unobtrusive, just as they should be.
Yes, this is a very pleasant, relaxing place to stay. A few months ago I spent two nights in the Wineport Lodge, just down the road, and, although it was good, I think I would rather the Radisson as an overall deal.

Beautiful Hotel with Excellent Service

from A TripAdvisor Member
I spent a weekend at the Radisson SAS Hotel Athlone in September with my husband, i am amazed with alot of the reviews on this website as we truly had a wonderful weekend, firstly i knew nothing about Athlone and we only choose to go to Athlone as there was a Radisson hotel there as we generally stay with the Radisson hotel group when we travel & having stayed at the Radisson in Galway, Athlone really does live upto Radisson standards.
We checked in on Friday evening late enough after travelling from Dublin and as anyone can imagine a 2.5-3 hour drive from dublin on a Friday evening can be very stressful, when we arrived we could see the reception staff were very busy as it was Friday evening and by the look of things the hotel was full for the weekend so we went to the bar before checking in, a gentleman behind the desk saw us walking away & came from behind the desk & asked if he could help, we told him we were going to go to the bar first & then check in so he offered to take our bags off us & asked us for our name.
We went into the bar & there was a lovely atmosphere in there a few people sitting around having drinks, dimmed lights and candles lit on the tables it looked very cosy so we ordered a drink at the bar and the bar man told us to take a seat & he would drop the drink down to our table which we were quite amazed with as that is not your normal service in hotel bars, we felt quite special from that moment and i think thats what started our Excellent weekend off for us, we got very relaxed & stayed for a few more drinks & then some music started, there was a man singing & playing an Organ, it was very nice and everyone seemed relaxed.
We decided to check in and when we returned to reception the same gentleman was there and he remembered our name which we were gobsmacked with, he got our bags for us & checked us in, we went to our room, we had booked a riverview room which only cost 10 euros additional, & the room was just fab, so clean & bright, we were very happy.
I could really go on forever about our lovely weekend in this hotel and i would recommend anyone coming to Athlone to stay in this hotel as it is new, clean & very personal, it really was the perfect hotel for a romantic weekend away, we were very sad to leave but we will definately be back & i have told all my friends of this lovely hotel, as i said earlier i was sad to
read the comments on this hotel & felt i should express my fellings & my experience at the Radisson Athlone.

Seans Bar Seans Bar is the first and last stop for pub life in Athlone. The pub has a great atmosphere and is the old style pub that used to exist in every town in Ireland years ago...
