Lovely Luxurious Stay

The Hodson Bay has a fantastic new wing with a beautiful Spa. Stayed with 2 friends for a girlie break. New rooms were so luxurious, huge bed, plasma TV, fabulous decor could have stayed in the room all night, but went to restaurant for lovely seaood, did not go to the bar as we had spa treatments all the next day and wanted to be in top form to enjoy them. The Spa is fantastic, it smells wonderful from outside so we were anticipating a wonderful day and were not disappointed. The weather was nice enough so we went for a walk out by the lake after, only problem was we were so relaxed we hated getting into the car to drive home - would recommend 2 nights to fully relax after spa day. Got a great deal as we stayed on a Sunday night but it would have been worth it at full price as we spend the whole next day lounging around in the Thermal Spa and leisure centre after our treatmnts.

This is an over rated and overpriced hotel. The outside of the hotel is filthy and the rooms are nothing special. It is a very expensive hotel to stay at and i would never recommend it to anyone. When i called up i was given a price per night and when i arrived they argued with me that it was higher. There was nothing i could do but pay because it isn`t near the town. Terrrible place.

Not to be missed !

Hodson Bay Hotel

This hotel is a great place to stay for either business or pleasure purposes. The hotel is set beside the Shannon in Athlone, Count Westmeath. The rooms are spacious with all the usual amenities with free broadband (cabled) in the older (not that old!) part the hotel. A new wing has just opened with more modern rooms but these are quite a bit more expensive and I’m not sure if they are worth the extra but I must say the bed was fantastic! When I stayed in August they were still waiting for some of the new rooms to be cabled up for broadband but the WiFi service was good although this was not for free. There is a very nice spa centre with all the usual treatments, I haven’t had the opportunity to use yet, but it looks very stylish.

There is a great bar with live music on the nights I stayed (guy on a keyboard with a girl singing etc.) plus there is a self-service ‘pub type’ type food service. The best place to eat however is the L’Escale restaurant; the menu is varied; the 4-course set menu is excellent value and they always have something unusual to offer such as Springbok or Kangaroo etc. Also look out for the free wine tasting on a Monday and Wednesday evening I think, there is very informative talk as you get to taste 3 or 4 glasses of wine!

The Hodson has always some deals, for instance I normally stay for two nights and book the midweek break, which you get dinner in the L’Escale on one night included.

The only downside to the Hotel is parking, since the Hotel is in such a nice location it does attract a lot of people taking in the scenery or just messing about in the water, the waterfront is a public space and not hotel owned. The hotel does not have any dedicated parking for residents so on occasion I have had to park in the public parking by the marina, this is not a problem just a small inconvenience but the parking problem is worse when there is a wedding on when its almost impossible to park (Summer Months Only)

I cant understand the one and only negative submission, I have always found the rooms to be clean and the service exceptional and the food fantastic but perhaps you cant please everyone!

I say at the Hodson whilst on business in Athlone and I have stayed in a number of hotels in the area but the Hodson is by far the best its a little out of town but it’s only about a 10-minute ride away if you want to visit Athlone.

I would recommend the Hodson Bay for business and pleasure use.

some faults but still loved it

I took my husband there for his birthday, the setting is great ,quite but alot of people around and very friendly.there is a huge lake in front of the hotel that caters for water sports and a pier where hire boats moor up. The hotel, staff great, its a big hotel caters alot for weddings.bar fine ,we sat in the conservertory area which was lovely.room was fine ,needs updating and cobwebs on the windows was a no no.we had a weekend package which included dinner.there are 2 restaurants ,the octogan and l'escale,we had dinner in octogan but i thought the menus were alike .food was great.my hubby said best in ages.he also used the leisure center ,that too was good.this is a new extension with rooms which are million times better than old part. i will go back its a lovely place but go for the rooms in the new spa section.also its about 10 minute drive outside athlone town so a good getaway.

Lovely room , terrible view

from TAJK
We arrived on a Friday evening after 8pm. We had booked into the new wing at extra cost to experience the beautiful new rooms. We opened the door and as predicted the room was indeed lovely. However, once we took a look out the window we were more than disappointed. Our room was at the back end of the hotel and faced on to the roof of a shed, and into a ditch! There is still plenty of construction going on and we got the benefit of the work men's chat the next morning too. I guess we should have asked to move , but after a long week and a drive in friday evening rush hour we just didn't have the energy.

This is a nice hotel but is somewhat of a wedding machine. The spa is nice , very clean and new , but the staff are a little bit scatty and my therapist had to keep running from one room to anther to get the stuff she needed for my pedicure.

I wrote a comment on the card and told the girl at reception how the view had let us down completely. We expected to be looking out over the Bay. She said she would pass on my complaint but as suspected that was the last I heard.

All in all a nice experince but wouldn't rush back.

Super Weekend Break

from axle99
Took a weekend break for two in July. Since previous visit, they have added on excellent Spa facilities with a new pool etc, all of which are excellent. They have new 5* Suites to go with the new build but we stayed in one of the old rooms and found it very comfortable. The food in the L'escale is excellent ( a notch above the other restaurant and not much dearer). Nice atmosphere around the place and the stunning weather was a bonus. I will return again and would recommend it to other.

Hodson Bay Hotel

I loved the Hodson Bay Hotel. The staff at reception were some of the most helpful and friendly I have ever encountered, the food and facilities excellent and my room comfortable, clean and with a wonderful view.

I do however have one or two negative comments. I found that the restaurants closing at 9.00 very inconvenient, especially in summer when the long days mean that one can stay out longer enjoying the beautiful surroundings and views. In fact, entering the dining room too late meant that the only food available (even room service stops at 9.00) was a sandwhich. Surely the opening time of the bar restaurant and the main ones could be extended to 10.00. Also the toiletries in the bathroom were very meagre. A hotel of this calibre usually provides fsr more than a miniscule piece of soap and two tiny shampoo bottles.

Having said that, I have only great memories of the lovely three days I stayed at the Hodson Bay and hope the management will take my few above criticisms on board..

A little bit of heaven

I have just come home from a 3 night stay in the Hodsion Bay Hotel in Athlone and I have to report that it was a wonderful experience. The staff made you feel that you were the only guests in the Hotel even though it was extremely busy. Our room was excellent with a spectacular view of the bay to waken up to in the morning. The food in the restaurant was superb - and the service was incredible. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone who needs a relaxing break.

Disappointing and Frustrating

from A TripAdvisor Member
We booked a suite for 2 nights and we had our 1year old with us. The suite €220 per night was dirty (cobwebs everywhere, dead flies on window, bathroom dirty black grouting ). The furniture would not be sold in a charity shop it was that badly marked, sofa was ripped. I did not want to unpack, it was completely depressing. Then we went to bar for carvery, the bar was dirty and grubby. There were windows open and smoke was coming in from conservatory. When I requested a room change they couldn't find anything better of similar size and would not allow children into new suites. The cot they provided, we found our baby eating a piece of it which had broken off and was left in the cot. The manager did listen to what I had to stay and reduced price but this was not what I wanted. I wanted the 4 star luxurious accomadation they quoted on their brochures. He brought complimentary champagne to the room as I was celebrating my birthday and said he would do his best to get a new room for the Saturday. I asked at six Saturday evening (thought I would be approached before this) what about a room change and of course nobody knew anything about this. Explained and they showed me another room, not a suite but at least clean and modern. So I changed but in general very disappointed and frustrated with the whole place. The breakfast was nice and dinner in restaurant ok but not 4 star. There was old bread lying in the corner of the dining room from breakfast, cleanliness definitely not a strong point of this hotel. I will never go back here or recommend to anyone to visit here and I did not think this was a family friendly place to stay.

The Wonderful Hodson Bay

from jabez
We have just returned from a long weekend at The Hodson Bay Hotel. The hotel staff were a pleasure to deal with, the booking we made was at short notice to attend a family funeral. A family room was made available and all the little extra's taken care of, (ie. early breakfast, route plan, ferry enquiry) which was a tremendous help. The hotel although large has kept the personal touch. The room was immaculate with the usual tea/coffe making facilities, phone and en suite. We all loved the new pool and leisure complex and the staff there were also extremely helpful and polite. The breakfast is great and plentiful, the first day we had continental and the second a wonderful full Irish! wow a feat in itself. The last time we stayed in March 05 the kids attended the kids club and gave us a much needed break, they loved it and didn't want to come away. Overall I would say the hotel does cater for all ages, with enough to please everyone, although slightly expensive it is without a doubt worth every penny. We have already booked another mid-week break.

Wonderful Hotel with super staff.

Just back from 2 nights at Hodson Bay and must say we had an excellent weekend, 6 of us had a super time, from the minute we arrived on Friday evening the reception staff were very professional and friendly, our rooms were super, we were in the new wing and the rooms are really top class. Food was also very good, we ate in the restaurant one night, had bar food and breakfast all were most enjoyable. This hotel is one that you feel you can spend all weekend here without having to leave the grounds. Nice walks, golf if you wish and a fab Leisure Centre. Entertainment in the hotel was most enjoyable - I found the music in the bar on both nights very good as were the bar staff, most pleasant and helpful even when I looked for tea/sandwitch at 11.30pm on Sat night, there was no problem, service with a smile. On my experience I can only highly recommend the hotel, the staff were very friendly and efficient - and amazingly I never saw a Manager for the whole weekend. We will definitely be back.

Just ok.

from KMULL
Spent 3 nights in Hodson Bay. Paid extra for lake view room and got a great room. However it was right beside the building work that is still ongoing in the hotel (new extension). Had to move due to the noise, got moved to a Junior suite, sounds great but this room in muy opinion is badly in need of a face lift. Leisure centre is very unappealing but a new one is near completion (badly needed). Restaurant was excellant as were all the staff. Bar is in need of major facelift. Overall stay was average, would probably give hotel another chance when all building work has been completed.
