Historical Traveller Reviews of Icelandair Loftleidir Hotel

Good Hotel for the price

from travelagent15
I stayed at this hotel while attending a convention and found the hotel to be fairly nice, but to far from the city. I was aware of this by looking at other reviews, but the walk is pretty considerable. They do have a shuttle, but it didn’t work around the times I needed. The typical cab fare is about $20 each way to and from the city. I usually shared it with other attendees, so it worked out fine. Except late at night when everyone is fighting for a taxi. The room itself was very clean, the bathroom was European in the since it was very small. Mine only had a shower, but other rooms do have baths. The room was very clean and I had a view of the airport right outside my window. You could see the ocean as well so it wasn’t that bad, except the planes flying overhead and starting they’re engines early in the morning. I kept my room warm due to it being so cold outside, but everyday the housekeepers turned down my heat and opened the window, so when I came back I was freezing. The staff was not friendly at all and I felt like they knew we had to stay there, so they didn’t go out of they’re way to help us. I actually don’t remember any of them smiling. The breakfast was pretty standard, although I encourage you to load up since it’s free and the food in Iceland is very expensive. I paid $35 USD for a Hamburger at the hotel restaurant. They do have a swimming pool and small shop in the hotel as well. I would go back, but I would stay closer to the city and in hopefully a friendlier place.

Okay, but would choose another hotel on return

My boyfriend and I booked Iceland Air's Northern Lights Quest package for March 10-31. First of all, Iceland Air's packages are a good deal considering the prices in Iceland. The package included a stay in Loftleider (which we chose based on the city shuttle).

Let me say first that this hotel is about 45 min to 1 hour away from the international airport. Thank goodness a transfer was included in our package otherwise we would have had to pay $100 for a taxi. We were on a red eye flight from NYC and when we arrived our room was not available. I didn't expect it to be, but wonder why Iceland Air books the package on a red eye and then doesn't arrange for early check in.

Breakfast was not inlcuded on the day of arrival either so we were on 4:00 am NYC time with no food and no place to sleep. We took the 9:30 am shuttle into the city center.

The shuttle is inadequate. It leaves at 9:30 am, and 10ish and returns from the city center to the hotel at 11:45 am and then not again until 6pm!!! We ended up walking back to the hotel twice which took about 20-30 mintues across a highway.

Breakfast was okay. Buffet with hot and cold.

The beds were very comfy. I enjoyed them very much. The hotel was clean and despite the $12 beers (typical of iceland) we were pleased with Loftleider with the exception of the shuttle.

The shuttle is the reason that we would not return.

They also have a tour desk in the hotel which is always staffed and very convienent as well as two free internet kiosks.

My boyfriend and I booked a weekend package through Icelandair over President's Day weekend - and first let me note that I can't say enough good things about Iceland. When it comes to the Loftleidir though... the rooms were clean and yes, we had an English TV channel, but that wasn't why we'd come to Iceland... to me the whole place smelled like it had been bathed in cigarette smoke since about 1972, and we found that one of our reasons for choosing the Loftleidir - the free shuttle to/from Reykjavik's center - was all for naught when it failed to show up to bring us back to the hotel on Saturday night! We and two other couples froze outside for half an hour after it was due (Loftleidir is only a mile away) before we finally split a cab back. I have to say I wasn't crazy about the woman attending the pool/spa either... but mostly the lack of the shuttle, when you consider that a cab to go the mile into town is $20 to $30 each way, really ticked me off since we could've stayed in the city center for, ultimately, the same price (as we weren't about to trust the shuttle again the following night, and it's kind of dangerous to walk across a busy highway at night).

Automatic Choice

Stayed many times on business as it is very convenient for Reykjavik Airport though quite a long walk out of town (20 mins ?). NB international flights land at Keflavik Airport, some 40 km out of town, despite what your ticket might say ! Good, clean, comfortable international standard of hotel. Bathrooms a bit cramped for tall people. Breakfast good (pig out !). A la carte evening menu not good value IMHO; best value, but still expensive, is the help yourself buffet. Plenty of eating places in town. Yet to find a cheap one though. You can always order a pizza by telephone and they will deliver to the hotel ... Never tried the pool. Pity about the weather - nearly always winter !

Great Thanksgiving in Iceland

from jadams444
My wife and i stayed at the lofteidir for the Thanksgiving holiday. We thought the hotel was very accomodating in every way. They had a buffet For our Thanksgiving meal and along with the local foods they actually went out or their way and had Turkey with all the trimmings prepared. The food was excellent and the service was outstanding. They had a nice indoor pool which was very clean. All the people that worked at the hotel were very friendly and were always willing to help if you needed anything. The rooms were clean and large enough. We stayed for a week and never had a problem.
There was a walk involved to get to the center of town but if you do any walking at all it was not that big of a deal... 20 minutes and you were there. There was also shuttles and regular buses (#16) if you preferred not to walk. And of course you could always call a taxi and there was always one available.
We would definitely stay at this hotel again.

inconvenient, little character

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here as part of Icelandair's package for the Iceland Airwaves festival, and with our travel dates it was really our only choice. If we had had more options, we would never have chosen this hotel. The long walk into town definitely didn't ruin our trip, but it isn't very pleasant. Shuttles to the city center are very infrequent. The rooms are smallish and nothing special. It's the only hotel in town with a pool, but even that doesn't mean much, since public swimming pools are clean and a great place to hang out with locals. I will say that we were never ever bothered with noise from the domestic airport next door, and that the breakfast is generous although, once again, nothing special.

Comfortable stay in Reykjavik

from A TripAdvisor Member
Not the prettiest hotel in Reykjavik but my partner was attending a conference there so was very convenient.

Stayed 5 nights at this hotel, rooms were a little on the small side but nicely decorated and lovely and clean. Mix up at check in when they had allocated us a twin room instead of a double but quickly resolved and they put us in one of the themed 'poet' rooms as all the standard doubles had gone.

Breakfast buffet has a very good selection though some of the hot food is lukewarm - think they need more powerful heat lamps.

Sauna and Hot tub are nice touches, it also has a small in-door pool.

A short walk up the hill to Perlan to see some amazing views. Overlooks the domestic airport but I think we only saw 2 planes take off during our whole stay so not noisy. Wonderful view across Reykjavik and the sea from the window (and ofcourse the airport!)

Walk from the centre can be long in the dark (about 20-30 mins) but the hotel run a free shuttle bus (last one leaves centre of reykjavik at 10.45pm) and the No16 bus also stops at the hotel so we only had to walk it a few times.

Comfortable choice

from AndyTraveller
Although not downtown (KIV: downtown can be very noisy late at night) it was a relatively easy walk in to town. The great weather helped: had it been raining it might have been a different story. However, they do run shuttle buses to town which was useful. Breakfast was good and staff very helpful. No aircraft noise problems which was our initial concern. If you don't mind the walk this is as good a choice as any.

Great hotel

from jim7
Great hotel, just next to the domestic airport, but with no noise at all.
Nice and clean rooms, helpfull staff, great breakfast, indoor pool with a hot pot. The hotel is also 5 minutes walk to the Perlan where you can get a fine view of Reykjavik. Next to the reception you can also find Reykjavik Excursion´s desk where you can book your trips. Reykjavik is fantastic and so is the rest of Iceland. Do not miss to eat hot dog from Baejarins Bestu, just across the harbour.

Good choice but not midtown

from Petteri
This hotel is good choice, but it's not in the midtown. There is a shuttle bus going between the hotel and the city centre every now and then, but you should not be afraid of the short walk.

Breakfast is great, but there was quite a rush and sometimes it was a little bit confusing, too.

Everything worked fine and the price comparing to hotels in the city centre is very comparative. If you want to stay in the city centre, this is not your hotel - but then you should also pay much more.

Top Local Tips for Reykjavik

complimentary shuttle bus I recomend travellers make use of the complimentary shuttle bus the hotel provides. It will take you downtown and back several times a day.... saves you cash on taxis.....

Duty Free Buy food and drink at the Duty Free on arrival whilst waiting for your bags

Bring strong moisturiser It was very cold when we arrived 2 degrees and really sunny and a bit windy, so suffered wind burn. Bring moisturiser for your skin as it really dries out there.
