Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Plaza Reykjavik
Great Location
from INDISGUISE1809At night, there were numerous bars and restaurants in the vicinity, from the Conran designed Rex, thru Italian, Chinese, Fish, to more local restaurant/bars. Our particular favourite was the Cafe Victor which was just that during the afternoon but developed into a reasonably priced restaurant in the evening and later into a bar and disco. A good atmosphere.
The hotel was a good three star with adequately sized and equipped rooms. We had a room on the top floor with a bath, but I am not sure all rooms had a bath, just a shower, probably best to check. Other contributors have commented on the breakfast choice and this was strange to say the least (good if you like Bourbon or Custard Cream biscuits for breakfast, I kid you not!) although if you want juice, cereals and toast you will also find these. I think they also did scrambled eggs and bacon.
All in all, we were quite happy there and would stay again.
great time
from michimoojust came back from a four day stay in the plaza hotel.
location could not have been better.nice rooms ,excellent breakfast choice, helpful staff.right next door to tourist info, which was good for booking trips. went to the blue lagoon on my 40th birthday, brilliant!!
maybe next time would hire a car for more freedoom to explore.
even saw the northern lights!!!
a great place to visit, will be going back for sure!!!
Value for money
from mutleyjasperFor breakfast you can choose from scrambled eggs, bacon, cereal, toast, cheese, ham etc with coffee and tea.
The staff were friendly and I would certainly recommend it for a stay in Reykjavick. We also visited some of the other hotels on offer and this is by far one of the best for the price. The Hotel Reykjavick Centrum would also be high on my list of hotels
The Plaza offers excellent value for money and a great location.
Hmmmm
from TBeckett100The hotel had a business feel and was well located at the end of the main shopping area overlooking a little square. well located for a stroll and parking in the square on a meter basis 150kr pr hr between set hours, 10-1 on Sat and free on sunday.
The breakfast was varied however the bread for toasting was stale from the day before and i suspected the crispy bacon this morning was yesterdays bacon left over.
The TV channels for UK & US were limited to CNN, BBC World and Sky News. The TV was a nightmare to work, the volume button didnt work and the TV had to be reset each time.
Average hotel, average price. good thing is you can upgrade for 1500kr per night.
wouldnt stay again though, preferred the Clinic nr the Lagoon.
Pleasant modern hotel
from StellamanThe only criticism I’d have is the breakfast buffet. It was rather an unpleasant scrummage with lots of queuing and too many tables to negotiate your way back and forth. Staff found it difficult to keep everything replenished. However, the hotel was full for New Year. At less busy times, it might be a lot better.
Great Hotel
from Boo1Plaza Hotel - Excellent!
from 1CherryBThere is a Flybus from the airport that will take you directly to the hotel door which is well worth the money. We prebooked excursions before we arrived through Iceland Excursions and again they were excellent, the service was perfect. You were picked up at the hotel on time, taken on the tour and then dropped back at the hotel. We visited the Gulfoss water fall and Geysers and on a separate trip we went to the Blue Lagoon, this is a must, an experience you will never forget.
The Plaza Hotel is well worth the money and I would highly recommend it.
Great Convenient Hotel
from NataliePattersonMy only 2 complaints about the hotel were that they didn't give you a clock in the room. The alarm came from the TV. However, the walls are extremely THIN and we could hear everyone's TV alarm going off in the morning AND the people fumbing around trying to turn it off. Besides that, the hotel was perfect!
Also, around the corner is one of the best dining deals in the city, Tapas Bar. You can try various items, including seafood for a VERY reasonable price for Reykjavik.
Good hotel
from Lindsay1Breakfast was a good spread of both hot and cold food. It was continually replenished. We had to leave early on our last day to catch an early flight and a cold breakfast is available from 4.30am!! Although we didn't feel like eating very much at that time it was welcome.
The central location is great. In fact we booked the hotel before we decided to hire a car but didn't find parking a problem. The noise from the square did bother us a little on Friday and Saturday night.
All in all I would recommend this hotel.
All smiles at the Plaza
from salmonfishermanAll hotel staff in Iceland look as if a close relative has just died, but the Plaza's can prove the exception - if you can get past your own immediate needs for wake-up calls and bus timetables and attempt to make friendly contact. The 'Classic' rooms in the newly-opened wing are very good indeed.
Incidentally, if you're going whale-watching, choose an early trip. Later sailings can be so crowded that you have to fight for a viewing spot on the boat.
Top Local Tips for Reykjavik
swimming pools There are alot of open air swimming pools in the city,we visited one,i would highly recomend you do the same, invigorating
Rent a Car and Save Money If I went again I'd rent a car from the airport and save money from the start. The only thing is you are not supporting the Icelandic community/business (although you pay entrance fees and buy meals etc when you are out and about. Another downside is that you could be missing interesting things that onloy a tourguide would know, but get a good guidebook and collect leaflets from the attractions you visit. Scour the internet before you go and print off local attractions.
For Great city views For great views of the city and amazing photo opportunities, visit the tower of the Hallgrimskirkja church and the PERLAN viewing decks ! Stunning views of open horizons !
