Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Plaza Reykjavik

Great Location

My wife and I stayed at the Plaza for three nights having chosen it from reviews on this website. It's location could not have been better. It overlooked a square and was situated on the edge of one of the main shopping areas in Reykjavik. It was also next door to the main Tourist Office which was very useful when booking excursions. The two main tour companies would pick up from this hotel using a small feeder bus and the system worked perfectly. You could also hire a car from there.
At night, there were numerous bars and restaurants in the vicinity, from the Conran designed Rex, thru Italian, Chinese, Fish, to more local restaurant/bars. Our particular favourite was the Cafe Victor which was just that during the afternoon but developed into a reasonably priced restaurant in the evening and later into a bar and disco. A good atmosphere.
The hotel was a good three star with adequately sized and equipped rooms. We had a room on the top floor with a bath, but I am not sure all rooms had a bath, just a shower, probably best to check. Other contributors have commented on the breakfast choice and this was strange to say the least (good if you like Bourbon or Custard Cream biscuits for breakfast, I kid you not!) although if you want juice, cereals and toast you will also find these. I think they also did scrambled eggs and bacon.
All in all, we were quite happy there and would stay again.

hi ,
just came back from a four day stay in the plaza hotel.
location could not have been better.nice rooms ,excellent breakfast choice, helpful staff.right next door to tourist info, which was good for booking trips. went to the blue lagoon on my 40th birthday, brilliant!!
maybe next time would hire a car for more freedoom to explore.
even saw the northern lights!!!
a great place to visit, will be going back for sure!!!

Value for money

from mutleyjasper
Have just come back from staying 3 nights at the Plaza. We had a standard room which was very clean and well furnished. The hotel is in an excellent position as it is only a 5 min walk to the main shopping area. There are cafes and restuarants nearby so you dont need to walk to far to eat and drink.

For breakfast you can choose from scrambled eggs, bacon, cereal, toast, cheese, ham etc with coffee and tea.

The staff were friendly and I would certainly recommend it for a stay in Reykjavick. We also visited some of the other hotels on offer and this is by far one of the best for the price. The Hotel Reykjavick Centrum would also be high on my list of hotels
The Plaza offers excellent value for money and a great location.

Room was clean and well presented. Bathroom clean and well stocked.

The hotel had a business feel and was well located at the end of the main shopping area overlooking a little square. well located for a stroll and parking in the square on a meter basis 150kr pr hr between set hours, 10-1 on Sat and free on sunday.

The breakfast was varied however the bread for toasting was stale from the day before and i suspected the crispy bacon this morning was yesterdays bacon left over.

The TV channels for UK & US were limited to CNN, BBC World and Sky News. The TV was a nightmare to work, the volume button didnt work and the TV had to be reset each time.

Average hotel, average price. good thing is you can upgrade for 1500kr per night.

wouldnt stay again though, preferred the Clinic nr the Lagoon.

Pleasant modern hotel

from Stellaman
Good modern hotel in the heart of Reykjavik. We had a nice room at the side of the hotel, which was quiet. Some guests at the front were disturbed by the city’s legendary nightlife. Don’t be put off by the smell of the showers - it’s only the sulphur from Iceland’s natural hot water supply!
The only criticism I’d have is the breakfast buffet. It was rather an unpleasant scrummage with lots of queuing and too many tables to negotiate your way back and forth. Staff found it difficult to keep everything replenished. However, the hotel was full for New Year. At less busy times, it might be a lot better.

Great Hotel

We stayed in this hotel in November 2006 and had a great experience. It is a very modern hotel in the middle of the city center. You are within walking distance of many shoppes and eating places. Rooms are big per European standards. Rooms had irons and water/tea pots.

Plaza Hotel - Excellent!

from 1CherryB
We stayed at the Plaza Hotel for a long weekend in October 2006 and we really enjoyed our stay. We arrived late so the room we had booked was not available and we were allocated a suite at no extra cost. The room was amazing, pure luxury. The decor was warm and modern, spacious and the view of the square and sea was wonderful. We didn't hear noise from any other rooms, in fact we didn't have any noise problems at all. The staff were very friendly and the rooms were cleaned daily. Location wise, the hotel is right on the main square, you literally walk out of the door and you have a selection of restaurants and bars to pick from. Breakfast is good too, a selection of hot and cold and as much as you can eat.

There is a Flybus from the airport that will take you directly to the hotel door which is well worth the money. We prebooked excursions before we arrived through Iceland Excursions and again they were excellent, the service was perfect. You were picked up at the hotel on time, taken on the tour and then dropped back at the hotel. We visited the Gulfoss water fall and Geysers and on a separate trip we went to the Blue Lagoon, this is a must, an experience you will never forget.

The Plaza Hotel is well worth the money and I would highly recommend it.

Great Convenient Hotel

from NataliePatterson
The Plaza has a great location on a charming square. It's a very short walk to the harbor and main shopping street. It's also attached to a tourist office, which makes booking tours super convenient. I booked a superior double, which was well worth it. The bed was much larger than expected with 2 seperate duvets. The view from our room was very nice, overlooking the Square. Internet was quick. TV was a little tricky and only had a couple channels.
My only 2 complaints about the hotel were that they didn't give you a clock in the room. The alarm came from the TV. However, the walls are extremely THIN and we could hear everyone's TV alarm going off in the morning AND the people fumbing around trying to turn it off. Besides that, the hotel was perfect!
Also, around the corner is one of the best dining deals in the city, Tapas Bar. You can try various items, including seafood for a VERY reasonable price for Reykjavik.

Good hotel

from Lindsay1
On arrival in Reykjavik we took a little while to get to the hotel because of the one way system. There is a car park to the rear and we left our car there to check in. Check in was simple and the room to the side and rear of the hotel was clean and of a good size. We had a 3 person room and had 3 proper beds (many hotels only have a sofa bed for the 3rd one).

Breakfast was a good spread of both hot and cold food. It was continually replenished. We had to leave early on our last day to catch an early flight and a cold breakfast is available from 4.30am!! Although we didn't feel like eating very much at that time it was welcome.

The central location is great. In fact we booked the hotel before we decided to hire a car but didn't find parking a problem. The noise from the square did bother us a little on Friday and Saturday night.
All in all I would recommend this hotel.

All smiles at the Plaza

from salmonfisherman
An excellent five-night stay in what is a the best of the six or seven hotels I've previously used in Reykjavik.

All hotel staff in Iceland look as if a close relative has just died, but the Plaza's can prove the exception - if you can get past your own immediate needs for wake-up calls and bus timetables and attempt to make friendly contact. The 'Classic' rooms in the newly-opened wing are very good indeed.

Incidentally, if you're going whale-watching, choose an early trip. Later sailings can be so crowded that you have to fight for a viewing spot on the boat.

Top Local Tips for Reykjavik

swimming pools There are alot of open air swimming pools in the city,we visited one,i would highly recomend you do the same, invigorating

Rent a Car and Save Money If I went again I'd rent a car from the airport and save money from the start. The only thing is you are not supporting the Icelandic community/business (although you pay entrance fees and buy meals etc when you are out and about. Another downside is that you could be missing interesting things that onloy a tourguide would know, but get a good guidebook and collect leaflets from the attractions you visit. Scour the internet before you go and print off local attractions.

For Great city views For great views of the city and amazing photo opportunities, visit the tower of the Hallgrimskirkja church and the PERLAN viewing decks ! Stunning views of open horizons !
