Top Local Tips for Budapest
Public transportation Definitely get the Budapest card, makes life so much easier on public transport, and purchase it at the airport before you leave for your hotel. The main airport transfer company is defintely good value for money as well. 3 hour city tour was worthwhile, and gives you plenty of time in the afternoon to return to your favourite spots.
Walking tours We followed Frommers Walking Tours of Budapest (all 5) and were very pleased to be able to get away from the super touristy parts of Budapest for some parts of the tours... If you follow them, be careful as there is a typo in the Walking Tour #5 -- the turn after the "Brick School" on Toldi is wrong -- check a map (basically the turn is right at the street on the corner of that school)... Also, the playground there has a porta-potty that you can use -- and all the porta-potties we found were very very clean and had toilet paper!
