Great Value For The Budget Traveller

We stayed at the Rubin over New Year's and had a very pleasant stay. It should be pointed out that despite descriptions of the hotel being located in a green suburb, the front actually faces a busy main road which can be fairly noisy. That said, transport links to central areas were plentiful. The only downsides to our stay would be location and the sometimes patchy buffet breakfast. However, looking at various information before we booked, we got more than we were expecting in terms of room quality, service and facilities. Seeing as the hotel is also sold as a conference centre, it is fair to say that facilities are more geared towards business use, but this is obvious when reading any information about the place. We were upgraded to a suite with an additional sitting room on arrival which was a very nice surprise! The 'Wellness Centre' offered a swimming pool, jacuzzi and various saunas for no extra charge and we were also offered free ten pin bowling! On the whole the staff were very polite and helpful, and were very forgiving of our lack of linguistic skills! We would definitely stay at the Rubin again and would also recommend it to those looking for good value for money.

My stay at the Hotel Rubin was an extremely unpleasant experience.Upon my arrival at reception I was informed by the male receptionist that I had been booked to stay there for 3 nights with the fourth night offered free. I explained that I had booked and paid for 8 nights he insisted that I had not. This exchange continued until I was in a very distressed state indeed so upset that I had to walk outside the hotel in order to collect my emotions sufficiently to retrieve my booking confirmation which was taken by the receptionist with no apology for his mistake. No offer was made to assist me or my companion also female with our luggage until we requested help. We were shown to a room with torn wallpaper a small hole in the wall and a torn bedspread. We were offered a choice of alternative accommodation and whilst this was aesthetically more pleasing it overlooked a busy road and train track's. The Rubin Hotel advertises itself as an establishment that offers satellite TV but neglects to mention that no English speaking channel is available and there is no facility to buy movie's. The hotel also lacks any of the amenities one would consider as standard in a 4 star hotel such as toiletries and tea and coffee making facilities. A kettle was supplied when requested but we had to purchase tea etc from a supermarket. The hotel is also totally devoid of any comfortable seating area where a single person could have coffee or read a book in comfort and since no comfortable chair or indeed coffee is available in the bedrooms this is indeed a problem. This hotel appears to cater to conference delegates or groups of this nature and to this end delicious buffet meals were made available and served in a very nice dining area. My companion and I together with a fellow unhappy English traveller were served our food in an area off the dining room and this felt like being sent to sit in the Naughty chair as in childhood. The telephone in our room did not take incoming calls and my husband was alarmed by the lack of courtesy shown him when he tried to contact me. My husband was so concerned for my welfare that he insisted I book into another hotel. I booked into the Thermal Hotel on Margaret Island an establishment that it will be my great pleasure to review as every courtesy and comfort was afforded me in this excellent establishment.
