Fabulous, with one caution
from A TripAdvisor MemberMy caution: a comment in another review suggests the hotel limo is the same price as other Budapest taxis. In fact, in Budapest each company/driver can set their meters at whatever rate they like and my experience was that the hotel limo is four of five times the price of the cheapest taxi firms.
absolutely royal!
from iuiaVery nice stay
from A TripAdvisor MemberNice but not 5 stars
from A TripAdvisor MemberAt first glance the hotel is amazing - marble, brass, the works. We checked in at the same time as a couple who had a nicer room - they got the "here's some maps and coupons, anything you need call us" reception, we got our room keys and nothing else.
The rooms are nicely sized, very clean, and the bathrooms are immaculate. We and our friends, who also stayed there, noticed a heating issue mentioned in several other reviews - we couldn't turn down the heat in the rooms; in fact, our friends had to change rooms because of it.
The breakfast buffet is beyond spectacular, but find out when you're booking if it's included - ours wasn't, and it's 20 Euro per person. That said, the wait staff in the restaurant were the only staff in the hotel who earned the 5-star reputation.
Overall, beautiful hotel, indifferent staff. I would stay here again if I found a good internet deal, but I would definitely look elsewhere first.
Not so Royal
from Lintogo5* luxury
from A TripAdvisor MemberIf breakfast is included in your deal its great(otherwise about£15) Everything you've ever seen on a breakfast buffet and more besides! (Salad and champagne for breakfast???) We hardly needed lunch. We thought the brasserie a bit OTT but ate twice in the Bistro. Good ambience, unobtrusive Hungarian accordion player, good choice of menu and wine and also popular with the locals. Always a good sign but a good idea to make a reservation.
In Feb 2006 the spa will reopen so will be even better. Hotel's own taxi charges same rates as town taxis and was useful as my husband was recovering form a bad chest infection. Airport shuttle can be ordered at the hotel and the concierges were cheerful and helpful with excellent English.
It is about a 7 minute walk to the nearest Underground station. I recommend a Budapest card so there are no problems in buying tickets as friends of mine did not understand the system and were fined for doing the wrong thing.
I will happily give more info to anyone who asks.
Watch out for locked fire doors
from A TripAdvisor MemberThey held a noisy business reception in the echoing marble atrium outside our bedroom window, until midnight - on the one night we needed sleep.
Someone hammered on the door early each morning insistently asking to inspect the minibar to see if we'd used anything.
Comfortable spacious rooms and smart marble bathroom - but this hotel did not provide the basics of a safe and sound night's rest.
Stunning
from A TripAdvisor MemberWonderful weekend
from Merman101We were upgraded to an Executive Room in the hotel which was spacious, luxuriously decorated and overlooked the Atrium. Dinner in the Brasserie restaurant was superb and we found the service faultless. One of the highlights of each day was the buffet breakfast, which had something for everyone. We couldn't resist a glass of bubbly with our smoked salmon! My only slight disappointment was that the Choclatier/Champagne cafe at the hotel was not open, but there were plenty of alternatives to indulge.
We really enjoyed our time in Budapest and would highly recommend staying at the Grand Hotel Royal. We will certainly be going back after the Spa opens in 2006.
Stunning hotel
from QuargilThe public areas on the ground floor are absolutely stunning and the executive rooms well-appointed. Upgrading (or being upgraded) to an executive room also gives you access all day to a lounge where you can have free drinks and snacks, which is most welcome. The service was very good throughout - perhaps with a particular mention of the waitress in the executive lounge.
It is also very conveniently located for a city break.
The only slightly negative comment would be that the food in the restaurant was fine but not outstanding (although they had a special "Italian Week" on when I was there, so it could be that the food is better when it is concentrating on native cuisine.)
Top Local Tips for Budapest
Go to the opera Performances for the Hungarian State Opera House can be booked online and it even allows you to select your seats in the auditorium. You print your own e-ticket. Simplicity!
Budapest Card Buy A Budapest Card from the Concierge located in the hotel lobby. I bought one with a 72 hour validation period for 8,000 HUF (€32 approx) and the time of the purchase is written on the ticket to ensure you get a full 72 (also available in 48 & 24 hour) hours. The card entitles you to use all buses, trolley buses, metro and trams within the city limits. It even entitles you to use some on land railway routes. The card also entitles you to a range of discounts on tours, shops, restaurants and free entrance to museums and the zoo. It even includes free travel insurance!
Szechenyi Thermal Baths These are really worth a visit. This is where the locals go. The outdoor pools are amasing. Feels a bit like "one flew over a cuckoo's nest" when you walk in, but its an experience!! Make sure you take your own towel and hire a cabin to change in for the complete experience!!
