What an excellent choice this hotel was. Arrived back yesterday from a wonderful stay in Budapest. The Carlton is very well positioned as you are close to most of the historical area (Castle Hill), but only 2 minutes walk to the Chain Bridge which connects you to the Pest side, where the modern shopping area and the Vosmarty Ter (Square) and Christmas Market is. Nice refurbished room (and they gave me one high up so that I got a bit of a view of the Danube - 6th floor). If you like tea and coffee in your room, then take your own cups as theirs are tiny scoop things! Last and not least, the breakfasts are excellent with lots of variety for continentals and hot food for us British. I would definitely stay in this hotel if I visited Budapest again!

Just spent 3 wonderful days at the Carlton with my wife and two small children. We were given a very spacious room on the top (7th) floor (Room 706). It was spotlessly clean with all the usual facilities (kettle, tea/coffee, mini-bar, toiletries, hairdryer, safe, Sat. TV) and had more than enough room for a baby bed, spare bed for our eldest, as well as a very large double for us. One small downside for some maybe that there was only a shower and no bath. The room was also quiet, if a little warm but due to its location on the top floor there was no problem leaving the windows ajar all night. Breakfast was satisfactory. There is plenty of variety and no-one, regardless of their morning nutritional needs, should go hungry.

The location of the hotel was also perfect for us. Only a 200m walk and you are at the starting point for either the funicular train up the Castle Hill or the Chain Bridge over to Pest. With reference to a previous post, we never once smelt any unpleasant odours and the renovation work can easily be avoided by taking the top road, instead of walking down the steps outside the hotel towards the lower road. However one reason to head down the steps is to go to the wonderful Pater Marcus restaurant. The menu selection (more Belgium in origin than Hungarian) is extensive and delcious. The portions were very generous as well as being infinitely more friendly on the wallet than the over-priced tourist rip-offs to be found in the main shopping area of Pest. For beer lovers there is also a huge selection to choose from.

Finally, directly across from the hotel and mentioned in numerous other posts, is a lovely little bar which serves local beers, lovely toasted sandwiches and has a pretty wide selection of board/card games, for you to while away a few hours of an evening.

To sum it all up, the Carlton provides a perfect location, at a very reasonable price, from which to explore the less hectic, more historic heart of the city. Granted, the hotel does not have the range of services that the 5 star alternatives can offer, but did you really travel to Budapest to sit in a sauna and pay $10 for a coffee in a hotel lobby ?

Great Hotel, Convenient

This was a great hotel. Yes, it is not a Marriott or other 5 star hotel but for the price, it was more than adequate. I did not find it noisy at all. As a female traveling alone, I was felt completely safe walking around the area at night, with the same awarness that I would use walking in any city.

I loved that I could walk to all the main sights without a cab. Breakfast was okay too. It was not a huge spread, but it had the basics and it was more than adequate. My room (a single twin) was clean. The front desk also allowed me to check in early which was a relief since i had been traveling two days.

I would definately recommend this hotel to those who don't have the money to stay at the higher end hotels but do not want to stay at a hostel either.

Carlton was not up to expectations

Just returned from a 4-day stay at the Carlton Hotel. We did change rooms upon arrival, as the one assigned (and booked six months in advance) was not very nice. I would rate it good overall, but with some problems. Housekeeping is not up to par, and the location in Budapest requires more walking than we anticipated.

Important to note that this area of Budapest is undergoing sewer renovations, and thus the sidewalks are not safe and there are often strong odors. Had we known this in advance, we would have stayed across the river.

Just returned from a three night stay at the Carlton. Great Hotel! rooms are basic but clean and well serviced. Rooms are air conditoned, so although the location is quiet, you'll get a good nights sleep in big comfy beds. Breakfast included, and there's plenty of choice to set you up for the day. Best bit is the location, by the Chain Bridge for Pest and funicular railway up to Buda. Staff generally helpful, the chap on the reception could be a bit more cheerful!, but we had a geat time. Book It!!

Excellent choice

Carlton hotel is located in a small, quiet street on Buda side, just beneath castle. Rooms are clean, comfortable and adequatly furnished. Staff was polite and helpful. The hotel has its own garage which is a big advantage if you come by car. Main tourist sites are within walking distance. This is definitely good, moderately priced hotel which would meet your expectations.

The hotel is on the quieter and cheaper side of the Danube. The room was clean and maintained every day. Our room 711 was below street level at the rear of the hotel but was large enough for 3 people and faced onto the garden patio. We had to leave the patio door open diuing the night as we could not switch off the heating and the air conditining did not work. Breakfast never changed but was adequate. Do not buy drinks in the hotel as they are very expensive(9 pounds for brandy etc). Use the bar opposite (good beer, toasted sandwiches. coffee etc) all half the price of the hotel. Do not use the Abbot Restaurant at the bottom of the steps. We waited nearly 2 hours for our first couse to be served and then gave upand left without eating. We also saw police on the premises on two nights (probably irate customers). If you are over 65 you can use public transport free provided that you carry proof of age with you (ie passport). You do not need to buy the Budapest card.
We had a really enjoyable stay in Budapest and would recommend the city unless you are disabled (not much seems to have been done yet to accomodate people with disabilities).
One tip is that you do not eat in the tourist restaurants try and find a local place full of hungarians and you will find that it is well worth the trouble.

Location superb. Easy walk to Chain Bridge. Clean, modern rooms. Bathroom well lit and with a great shower. Breakfast buffet had a lot of variety. Housekeeping employees were very pleasant. Front desk clerks were rather curt. Pater Marcus Restaurant is mere steps from the hotel. Excellent food and atmosphere!

Does what is important in Budapest

I found previous reviews of Hotels very useful, so I hope this will give you some idea of the Carlton. We switched to this hotel at the last minute as we found that the hotel we had actually booked was in the less-desirable VII district. We were really glad we'd done this as what is important in Budapest is location, and, being situated at the foot of the Chain Bridge, this is ideal for all the famous sites. We didn't hire a car, and didn't need to (but there was plenty of walking!). The hotel is clean, and whilst it doesn't have the facilities of major hotels, we did not find anything to complain about at all. The rooms were basic, but fully acceptable, and the breakfast buffet was very good. The staff arranged the Airport Minibus for us (highly recommended) and all spoke good English. Beware hotels that are not in the centre of Budapest, as they can be in less-desirable or remote places. Despite warnings on some web sites though, we never felt threatened in any part of the city at any time, even though some areas are obviously past their best. Overall, if you want a comfortable, no-frills hotel, in a great location at a reasonable price, then I'd go with this one. Finally, if you do nothing else during your stay, take the night cruise on the Danube (we used the Legenda). Two free drinks, including "champagne", and a great commentary left a lasting impression on us that can't be got from the riverbank. Don't believe the bad stories, go and see this beautiful city.

Stayed for two nights at the Carlton hotel in March, friends and I shared a triple room which we found to be quite spacious. The room was spotlessly clean, the view from our room was not very good but we were not there to sit looking out of the window so this was not important. The weather while we were there was very cold and snowy but the hotel was beautifuly warm. The breakfast room was very nice and the food was plentiful, it's just a shame that they have'nt got a restaurant in the hotel, as it would be nice after a long day out in the cold if you did'nt have to turn out again for a meal. This hotel would not be good for people with walking difficulties as access to the entrance was down a steep slope or a flight of steps. Our stay was a very pleasant one and I would recomend this warm, quiet and friendly hotel.

Top Local Tips for Budapest

Underground If you use public transport make sure you buy a ticket before getting on and to cancel out the ticket on the system. I managed to buy tickets but did not figure out that I needed to cancel it. Staff on the underground spoke non or very poor English although the enforcement officer spoke excellent English

caledonia great great bar good food and good beers. staff fantastic. Roctogon is the funniest club i've ver been real hungarian great moves on the dancefloor but b city bar sells borsodi and stella for 70p superb. Buda catle labyrinth is also fantastic though the zoo is a little cruel camped conditions etc.
