Historical Traveller Reviews of Budapest Marriott Hotel

Welcome Luxury

Myself and my girlfriend stayed in this hotel at the beginning of February this year, after much deliberation due to the massive number of other options available. We weren't disappointed. Although the hotel doesn't look much from accross the river, you really don't get to look at it as you approach, and as soon as you get the entrance and foyer in view, you realise it's what's inside that counts anyway!
I don't personally get to stay 5 star often at all so have little to draw comparison with, but i'd struggle to see how anyone could fault this fine establishment. There are newer hotels but surely none better. From the marble and mahogony furnishings in the foyer and bar, to the unrivalled views of the river and castle, and the excellent food,.. This hotel didn't disappoint our high expectations!
Rooms were large and comfortable with every amenity you could expect, if perhaps a TAD dated, but clean and certainly nothing to complain about. The views of the river and the rates (only marginally higher we felt than a decent 3-4 star, and way cheaper than you'ld get in western Europe) were the main factors, along with the prior reviews, that sold us on this hotel.
The fantastic breakfast and helpful efficient service were welcome bonuses.
We must have sat and enjoyed every morcel of the buffet breakfast for a good hour and a quarter, with a waiter nearby whose sole purpose was to create the omelette of anyones' individual choice! Fab!
After a long days' rambling 'round the sites, it was an equally welcoming return offered by the relaxing piano bar, along with simply the all round luxurious 'feel' of the place.
If i were ever to return, it'd hurt me NOT to try stay at The Marriott again!

A very fine property

Woderful location and service. Watch out for the Mercedes Taxis waiting at the hotel. They proved to be almost double a regular licensed taxi.

Location, location, location!!

May 5-7, 2005 -- The location couldn't have been better. So convenient to everything and the view from our room was magnificent. Looking AT the hotel was a different story. The room was a little small, but comfortable. It was clean and decorated nicely. LOTS of pillows on the king bed which was a nice touch. We had the continental breakfast, as well as the american buffet breakfast. A little pricey, but we didn't mind. Called room service for coffee every morning and it was there in under 10 minutes. (Same for a bucket of ice!) The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. Got us tickets for the Danube River Boat Ride. They could have gotten us our train tickets to Siofok, but we asked them at the last minute and their travel agent had left for the day (Friday at 6pm). If we go back to Budapest, we'll definitely stay at the Budapest Marriott.

One of the better hotels in Europe

We just returned from a 5-day stay here and there are so many nice things to say about this hotel, especially in view of the very low price paid for it via Priceline, I don’t know where to begin!

Putting aside the unattractive exterior which I find totally unimportant, the room was fantastic – a very comfortable king-sized bed with about six plump and luxurious pillows, plenty of storage space, including a large closet with iron and board, several drawers, and real bedside tables (as opposed to a sort of countertop with no drawers found in some of the Priceline 4 star hotels in Paris), quality furnishings and décor, a very nice bathroom with Neutrogena bath products, lovely fluffy white towels and good water pressure. Selection of TV channels was a bit limited in English (CNN, Sky, BBC Prime).

The fitness center (albeit not very clean…, particularly the changing rooms, but it is not run by the hotel) had a squash court and sauna, as well as exercise equipment with a magnificent view of the Danube; I used it daily.

The hotel personnel were very friendly, courteous and professional. I took advantage of both the breakfast buffet (pricey but good) and room service (excellent). I can highly recommend the vegetable lover’s sandwich if you’re hungry! Across the street in the Millennium Center, there is a Thai Massage center. I had a 90 minute foot and back massage for 4500 HUF ($23.00); great!

Due having made a last minute booking, my son stayed at the Hotel Meridien a few blocks away and was given a suite on the 9th floor. I therefore saw both hotels and can compare. I would take the Marriott in a split second, for the location, friendliness of personnel and general atmosphere. The Meridien has a tiny fitness center compared with the Marriott – but they do have a pool and whirlpool bath - and they are not on the Danube, plus I found the other hotel clients more than a tad stuffy! Near the Marriott is a McCafé (McDonalds, just across the street) with great cappuccino and delicious pastries.

I will definitely go back!

The location could hardly be better - the look can

Having been at the Marriot from the 29th of april to the 1st of may I can only underline that the location of the hotel is perfect. Any facilities of public transportation are (very) nearby, the 'chain-bridge' is within walking distance like more or less any other attractions of the city-center.
The facade is nothing more then ugly - not even one star.
(The facades of the neighborhood hotels Intercontinental and Soffitel are not pretty either).
The comfort and service inside is all right but for sure not what you can expect from a five star facility. Especially if you are expecting lower prices due to the fact that you are in one of the 'emerging countrys' you will soon learn that the price level is already very established.
If you are in Budapest you have to have a look at the brand new
Four Seasons (or Gresham Palace). One year ago this totally renovated hotel opened on the Buda-side at the opposite of the chain-bridge. Tremendous.
The Marriot is a good choice for tourists who want to explore Budapest.
If you are looking for a really distinguished sort of hotel you want to look for others like the Kempinski, the Meridien or - if you like to afford it - the Four Seasons.

Nice hotel good location

Stayed for four days in March and was very happy with the hotel, it is not very modern but has that old world elegance feeling about it. The staff were all very plesant and friendly although some of the Duna Grill/terrace bar staff could attempt a smile now and again. The buffet breakfast was excellent as you would expect from a Marriott hotel. The location is perfect beside tram lines and within walkind distance of the metro, you have some of the best views in town of the river as all rooms have river facing windows and some if not all have small balconies. A word of warning though if you intend to use the telephone in your room, the rates for international calls were very high. All in all I would have no hesitation in recomending this hotel, just do not expect ultra modern five star.

Location, location, location........

Just enjoyed a 3 night stay at the Marriott (30th March 2005). We chose this Hotel after reading the reviews in this group and felt that they were spot on.
The location is perfect, the views from the balcony were good in daylight and fantastic at night when everything becomes floodlit. We booked on line and requested a balcony which we were given at no extra cost. All rooms have a view of the Danube and the historical buildings on the Buda side but not all rooms have a balcony so its worth asking. Breakfast was excellent, room was a standard European 4 star quality certainly not 5 star as we know it.
Restaurant meals were very good but as there is so much choice in the vacinity, it was nearly empty each night. Having been to Prague in November I would say that Budapest doesn't have the same wow factor that you get when you reach the view from Charles Bridge but I would say that the people seemed friendlier and the food and service was better.
If I ever return to Budapest then I would stay here again and would recommend this hotel to my friends. We paid just under £100 for the room and breakfast for two people which is very reasonable.

Last point - we were worried about all the talk of taxi's overcharging from the airport - when we exited the airport there was a girl organising taxis at a fixed price of 5200 HUF -approx £15 which I thought was good value. The same guy arranged to collect us for the return journey and was bang on the agreed time. It was worth the fifteen pound for the white knucle ride which if Disney could make a ride as good you would have to queue for hours to get on it!

Great View

What a view! Budapest Marriott is perhaps 5 years past prime in terms of decor, but upkeep is great, and the view truly cant be beaten. Excellent and friendly staff, and good location too.

Breakfast buffet is wonderful as long as it is included in the room price!

Overall, a comfortable touch of home in a unique and evolving city.

location, Marriot quality room

from Haarlem
Stayed here in August 2004. Great views (incl little balcony) across the Danube River and Chain Bridge (I believe all rooms have this). Very centrally located, so locations for food and drinks abound (hotel has possibilities as well, though more expensive). Would recommend a stay here.

Rooms with a view!

from A TripAdvisor Member
I was on business in Budapest last week, and felt total relief each time I got back to the Marriott. The room was very spacious, bed massive and comfortable, and piece de resistance was the view across the Danube to the Castle and, down to the right, the magnificent Chain Bridge.

Top Local Tips for Budapest

Hotel Taxis avoid hotel taxis ask reception to call you a cheap taxi

Don't eat along Vaci Utca Don't eat along the pedestrian tourist area. The prices are high and the food is so-so. Walk along the other main streets of Pest and you'll find better restaurants at more affordable prices.

Choose your taxi carefully Most taxi drivers the world over drive like maniacs. Budapest drivers are no exception however they do have a set fee which is calcuated before the journey starts. Hotels have their own taxis which also have a set fee but are considerably more expensive so always have a zona taxi cab.
