Good middle class & ideal when traveling by train

Hotel ideal for a short and not too expensive stay, especially well located for people arriving by train. Nearby and frequent public transport to city center. Staff friendly, breakfast enormous, fantastic sweets,lets one forget the poor location and much too small size of breakfast room !

Smells bad!

This hotel smells bad the interior and exterior are nasty you get yobs singing and drinking in the tiny bar. Cigarettes put out on the carpet. They can't cook nor do the staff smile. TV channels are only BBC and CNN. Had a massage in the newly opened gym asked to lie down and the bench collapsed. It really really sucks DON'T GO HERE!!!

Top Local Tips for Budapest

Splurge on a gourmet meal at Onyx Restaurant (right next to Cafe Gerbeaud)! After the obligatory visit to the legendary Cafe Gerbeaud, we were more hungry and the Cafe recommended the restaurant next door, Onyx. The restaurant was gorgeous and the food and service was exquisite (the chef had formerly trained/worked in Paris and had won culinary awards). I had the 7 course meal and my mother had the 4 course meal. Our bill for 2 people was $180 (including tip) however a meal/restaurant equivalent to this in NYC or Paris would easily cost $320 and upwards. This place will always hold a wonderful memory for me for Budapest.

Metro Make sure you get your metro ticket validated in the machine. The metro police tried to swindle us out of a $10/each fine for not validating our ticket and claimed that if we waited for the police it would be $35/each. The lady pretended to call "the police" and when we still refused to pay the fine she went in search of new victims.

Taxis Try to use the subway as much as possible. Even though the taxis are metered they will drive you around and charge what they want. Every ride to the same destination will have a different charge. Make sure when you ride the subway you punch your ticket. The subway ride is only a dollar but the fine is about 15 and they will catch you. They wait at the bottom of the escalator and if your ticket isn't punched you will get a ticket and be fined on the spot.
