Historical Traveller Reviews of Vedema Resort Santorini Hotel

Overall nice resort, although a little far from town

from sanders9119
We stayed at the Vedema in June of 2005 and found it to be a very nice resort overall. The rooms were nice and big (studios) - although the beds were uncomfortable and were not Heavenly Beds which you come to expect from a Westin property. The hotel is in Megalochori which is about 15 - 20 minutes from the main town of Fira. Alhough it didn't bother us staying outside of town, the hotel was a bit sleepier than the properties would be in Fira and you do have to take public transportation to get in to town (which the hotel provided and it was convenient). We rented mopeds one day and drove to the beaches at Perissa which I would highly recommend - beautiful and more of a beach feel than Fira. As long as you are prepared to stay outside of Fira, I would highly recommend this hotel as it was very relaxing and near a quaint small village.

Beautiful Resort , Overall Stay was Good but Some Significant Missed Points

My husband, his parents and I shared a two bedroom , two bathroom apartment for three days which was as beautifully appointed and sparsely themed decorated as noted in the website. We had three floors comprised of a large patio, living room, small kitchen area, 2nd level was a bedroom and decent sized bathroom with sitting room with tv and the small 2nd bathroom the size of a large door ( yes it was quite small). The third floor had a larger bedroom with storage shelves and a closet. The upstairs led to a red door to the rooftop terrace. We took the larger bedroom and the smaller bathroom which had no counterspace so I brushed my teeth and took out my contacts in the kitchen every single day- not quite luxurious. For a luxury resort, the pillows and mattress were too firm for my liking. And my husband who is 6 feet tall had to sleep in a fetal position. His body was too long for the bed. The caliber of the staff was mixed. We were greeted by a driver at the airport and taken to the hotel- perfect. We were greeted at the front desk nicely , followed by champagne. Every evening we had drinks at the pool bar before venturing to dinner and the bartenders were friendly, funny and very engaging. The same with the staff who served us our meal during breakfast and during pool hours. For a renowned resort, they could provide updated breakfast chairs which were stained and appeared dirty. The breakfast was fine, not as much hot selection but I think that preference is very American and English and we are in Europe, we should be able to change our eating habits because what is the meaning of travel anyway if we don't try it a different way? There was a woman in the evening at the concierge that I felt was a candidate for being on the verge of some serious rage rampage. She was unhappy in her job obviously ( told us so when we asked her how long she was at Vedema, the staff shares living quarters for the season and we arrived 12 days before the resort closed. most staff would graciously say they had a nice experience ) and one evening when I called to inquire on the weather for Venice, she was very abrupt and then called back and asked what dates I needed. I told her Wed, Thurs , Fri and she practically lashed out at me, no what DATES. Ok Ok it's October 12-15th. I'm the guest correct and she's the concierge? I felt the role was reversed. That was the last time I asked for any info, I was a little scared of her. The hotel restaurant was so beautiful and the staff was wonderful and engaging and the food was very good. One of them met Angelina Jolie and her son and acknowledged that when we inquired. We were not on any budget when we were traveling and I have to say that when you travel to an island, expect higher prices and when you are on holiday you should expect to enjoy yourself regardless of the prices. If you choose Vedema, expect higher prices in comes with the experience. This would have been a near perfect experience if the bed had been more comfortable, and larger and the second bathroom larger.

Disappointing and poor value for what you pay

from Jayde88
Were very disappointed by the rooms and the overall feel of the resort. Were in Santorini for our honeymoon.

Here are the issues:

1) Location - it is not close to the main town or the very picturesque town of Oia. Didn't have a view of anything and felt like we were in the middle of a town, not on an Island with amazing views of the sea. Waiting for shuttles into town from the hotel are few & far between. Taxi to Oia is 20 Euros each way and to Fira are 10 Euros (even though it's much closer than Oia) i.e. approximately 3 km vs 15 km.

2) Felt old - the pictures on the website are misleading. Considering this is supposed to be Starwood Luxury collection, it didn't feel like it. Rooms have sparse furnishings and we were first showed a Lime green room. The colour was not pleasing to look at. It was too much lime! We asked to move rooms and were given a blue room with a crack in the floor but we decided to stay put.

3) Bathrooms are small - tiny bathrooms with minimal counter space and no bathtubs, since they are "conserving water"

4) Keep windows closed - otherwise flies keep flying in.

5) Breakfast - by the pool. flies land on the food and the chairs feel old and dirty. Same breakfast every day. No variety and minimal hot food. would help if they explained what some of the food items are.

6) Service - okay. but one lady at the front desk was very rude when we inquired about the possibility of renting ATVs stating that locals hate when tourists ride them.

Overall, poor experience for honeymoon, not romantic and poor value for what you pay.

Beautiful Resort, Poor Value for Money

from A TripAdvisor Member
This is a beautiful resort hotel, and we were extremely relaxed with staying there (we used starwood points). The setting is very nice, and the individual villas spacious. We enjoyed the wine tasting during our stay, and the private black sand beach is fantastic.

However, the staff acts sometimes bizarrely, like the woman who received us initially warmly but then suddenly turned cold when she saw our starwood card.

We were there in early Sept and found the hotel to be practically deserted, like the reviewer from England who was there in July. They claimed that we were there in the one week that is slow, but I'm not sure i buy it. Therefore we were the only diners at night in the restaurant for example.

The restaurant food is anything but spectacular and very overpriced - we wish we had walked to the lively taverna nearby.

The wine tasting was a high point, it is 30€ per person.

Breakfast is copious, but for 20€ per person they shouldn't keep re-serving the food from the previous day - my wife was sick after breakfast the last day.

t get it twisted the Vedema is hot!

I had the pleasure of celebrating my 40th birthday in Greece with 35 of my friends. The goal was to stay at hip hotels with great service. I could not have been more pleased with Starwood's Vedema hotel. Now let me say that I was very interested in staying at Katikies Hotel or Perivolas because of the location and view but after staying at the Vedema I am glad that they could not accomodate my large party. First of all the rooms at the Vedema are out of this world.
All were tastefully appointed in different decors with nice bathrooms (if you are one to love a bath every morning make sure you request a room with a tub). Each room had a great deal of privacy and a living room which was perfect for my group in terms of entertaining. I myself had the EXTREME pleasure of staying in the Presidential Suite which was FANTABULOUS! I'm talking private pool (and I mean a lap pool), jacuzzi, 2 decks with the kind of outside furniture you find in "Architectual Digest". The suite also had a full kitchen with dining area and nice size living room. It was three bedrooms and though I shared the suite with two other friends each bedroom was so dope that there was no fighting over a particular room.
Now the service. Let me say that the Assitant General Manager George-catered to my every need. With such a large party I was in constant touch with him for months and he bent over backwards to make the preparations for and my actual birthday sublime. Not only did he provide champagne and a cake for me-gratis-but made sure that we were always taken care of. The concierge service was great. As you can imagine asking for 6 taxis at one time and reservations for 35 in Oia can be a daunting task, but they did it with grace and ease during our 4 night stay. In addition, they did a great job of finding a private guide to take her to the ruins. In terms of other services, there is a 3x daily free shuttle to the beach. And the Vedema has its own reserved section on the beach where they provide towels and bar service that you can charge to your room. There is also a daily shuttle to Fira and to the airport or port to pick you up for the hotel-all part of your room fee. The pool was perfect (though I had my own in the Prez Suite) and the bartenders had great personalities and kept us drinking for hours (keep in mind that to order Grey Goose can cost you an extra 10 Euros). There are also two restaurants and if you have the chance to savor the Lobster Rissoto -Do IT! There is also a Vineyard and Wine Cellar where there are daily wine tasting. Of course, Santorini makes some of Greece'sbest and most famous wines so the wine cellar here is a particular luxury.
Vedema also has a spa offering most services-I would say they were average but it was nice to have the amenity on site. Here is a tip-if you go to Vedema's beach a man and woman walk around and give 20 minute massages for 15Euro-they were heavenly!!!
I read some other reviews that guests did not like the rooms or the service but I thought it was incredible-in fact the best that I experienced in Greece.
Lastly, I should say that even though there were 35 in my party this is not a party hotel. We had a great time and they made us feel special everyday. It should also be noted that my friend spent her honeymoon at the hotel a week later in a tri-level suite and could not have been more pleased.
I would go back in a second!

The Vedema taught us how to relax!!

from Msbell69
My partner and I stayed at the Vedema for a couple of days after a cruise. As many posters have said, I too was nervous about the Vedema after reading some of the comments.

However, I was so glad that I did not act upon other peoples words or I would have missed out on a wonderful experience in Santorini.

The main area of Santorini is called Fira which is located in the middle of the island. On one side of Fira is Oia (the sunset side) and on the opposite side of Fira is the Vedema. All in alll you can get from the Vedema to Oia by taxi in less than 20 mins. It is also a beautiful drive as well.

We stayed in the Agean Suite with an outdoor jacuzzi. All of the villa's are laid out as suites however the Agean was a tad bit above that. The villa was very large. It had a nice size living room, fireplace and dining room table. A wetbar and a full size frig as the mini bar.

There was a canopy bed in the average size bedroom which was off of a large dressing room that had two large closets , a desk and sitting area.

The bathroom was off of the dressing area which had a jacuzzi bath tub, double sinks and a shower.

We were on the top floor so we had a very large deck that came off of the bedroom. On the deck was two teak lounge chairs, a nice teak table with 4 chairs and a jacuzzi. So you can see this was large.

Our view was of the sea, the Olive Trees, and downtown. I would not have traded our view for anything.

All around you are beautiful blue domed churches, vineyards, caper farms, Olive trees etc.... It is a true Santorini experience.

The Pool is very large with a great little pool side restaurant that serves the best breakfast buffett and lunch. There is also a nice size bar that serves whatever you desire. I have not seen such a well stocked bar at a pool.

The staff of the Vedema was top notch. We made several request for dinner reservations, taxis, suggestions etc,, and they were always ready and eager to help.

Depending on what you like, however the Vedema is out of the busy, husle and busle activity of Fira so at night time it is so still that you can just lay back and count the stars and clear your head. If you are wantingn to be the middle of everything than this resort is not for you.

However, the Vedema does offer shuttles that run very seldom to the beach and to Fira. You have to get a taxi to go to Oia. Please take my suggestion and do not rent a car or scooter. The streets are very narrow and crowded. I saw more accidents in the short time I was there and they were all visitors. A taxi is well worth the investment.

If I may suggest a place to eat for the food but most importantly the view. It was also suggested and rated by Conde Neste. It is called Ambrosia and is located in Oia. Do not get it confused with a place called Ambrosia and Nectar. You want the one only called Ambrosia.

However this place is not for you if you are afraid of heights. You are sittinng on the edge of a cliff with the most breath taking view that you will ever have in your life. I'm sure you have seen the famous of Santorini that had the Blue Dome Church with the 3 bells on top, well that is right next to the restaurant so you will feel like you are in a fairy tale!!

I would suggest the Vedema to anyone!

Poor Choice

This hotel is overated. It's far away from everything. Small pool with very few chairs. Calling it the most luxurious hotel is a disservice. You will be unhappy. Terrible value.

We had high expectations of this hotel since it is a Starwood Hotel Luxury Collection. It turned out to be the worst hotel of its category that it probably shouldn't be classified as a Luxury Collection. We had a villa style accomodation for 2 people, but very disappointingly, it didn't have a bathtub although they advertised that the rooms have marble baths. The location is undesirable because it is 10 minutes from the beach driving (hotel shuttle is provided but only every 2 hours), Fira is 20 minutes away, and the scenery is not what you imagined Santorini to be--barren landscape. The price of the room is outrageous, over $500/night, and beverages, meals, wine are almost 200% markup. The so-called health club/spa room only has two ancient treadmills and some weight equipment but we dared not use it because of the musky, moldy odour. While we were there, we heard so many customer complaining about the slow service and the overpriced rooms. I will not return.

It was fantastic!

It is not always the case that 5 star prices result in a 5 star holiday but the Vedema Resort in Santorini definitely lives up to expectations. The surroundings, the accommodation, the food and the service are all very good, as they should be. More importantly the Vedema Resort does not fail to live up to the highest expectations.
We found that the location of the hotel is a key to the enjoyment of our holiday. We have booked an Aegean Residence with a private open-air Jacuzzi, it was heavenly.
The hotel is located in a beautiful, calm and traditional village which permits you to combine a relaxing place to stay together with the advantage of being near the unique volcanic beach of Perivolos and the cosmopolitan centre of Thyra.
The resort attracted mainly American crowd, with a nice mix of age groups, not surprisingly mainly couples, and with a good vibe. Lucky enough you would have the chance to have a little chat with a low profile Hollywood star!!!
The restaurant food was wonderful with unique flavors. Highly recommended! The breakfast buffet is a very good reason not to spend all morning in bed. The staff has been really attentive and looked after us during our entire stay which means that you get chance to keep asking all those little questions you think of during your stay.
We made full use of all the facilities including the spa (which is really nice and cozy). I would actually recommend getting information from the hotel for general inquires regarding restaurants and places to visit, if you don’t want to be a tourist ‘victim’. Don’t miss Oia where you can see the most famous sunset of the world, as it is also a great way to meet a few other people and enjoy the beauties of Santorini!
We stayed for 7 nights and really did not feel like we had stayed in one place for too long.
We are not easily pleased but would recommend the Vedema Resort without any doubt! Its been a beautiful experience….

A very nice surprise

from miagringa
After having read all the reviews on tripadvisor & other sites, I was concerned about whether we would enjoy this hotel. We had gotten a package rate from Starwood ("Welcome to Greece Package") and had only paid USD $360 including tax per night for a Sr. Dorian Apt. (which, given the current exchange rate, was quite good). However, all that we read said the hotel was poorly situated and not so wonderful. We LOVED it. Granted, we were extremely lucky in that we were given an upgrade to an Olympian Suite (1050 eur per night usually) which had a private pool and a wonderful view of the vineyard. But overall, even if we hadn't gotten the upgrade, the hotel was charming, the service was five star (Vaya in particular was a very well informed & helpful concierge), and the food at the main restaurant Vinsanto (I think that's the name) was very good. Santorini is such a small island that location isn't so important for getting to explore everything. The hotel arranged for us to use their bikes for one day of exploration (free); another day they had scooters dropped off for us (20 eur each). Of course, if we had wanted the "caldera" experience, Katikies or something of the sort would have been far more appropriate, but also far more expensive. This was a really nice hotel with great staff & we were very happy with our stay.

Top Local Tips for Santorini

windy santorini Bring a sweater or light jacket. The island can be very windy, even when warm.

Rent a car Renting a car will help tremendously. It's equivalent to legs and not all that expensive (50 euros for a convertible smart car - everything included although gas was expensive when we had to top it up before we returned the car) - we used Gem car rentals and the owner was honest, easy to work with and fun.

Beach care Because the beach sand is quite hot, you may want to ensure you bring beach/surfing shoes to wear when walking on the sand.
