Very disappointing!

We were so looking forward to our stay at the Dana Villas, particularly after reading the numerous positive reviews on the Internet. Having just returned from a very costly and overwhelmingly mediocre hotel experience at the Dana Villas, I am now wondering whether perhaps some of these reviews are actually being posted by friends and relatives of the hotel proprietors.
Our personal experience of this hotel was disappointing to say the least. The hotel advertises itself as a four star hotel, but this rating proved to be hugely inflated. Services and room quality are quite basic. Service is poor, even by Greek standards. The breakfast buffet was a messy and unappetizing presentation of quite inferior products, frozen pastries, runny eggs, and messy pots of marmalades with flies crawling all over them. The staff were quite abrasive, intrusive, and sloppy in dress and service. We were very much appalled and disgusted by the poor service and quality of the food offerings and chose not to take any breakfast for our remaining days there. The hotel advertises private terraces overlooking the impressive caldera. There was nothing at all private about the terraces. Our view was partially blocked by an unsightly glass-encased restaurant construction of an adjacent hotel jutting out alongside our "private" terrace, which meant that we could not comfortably sit on the terrace without having diners from the restaurant ogling us like we were fish in an aquarium. Add to that the most tediously droning, cheaply-touristic wine-tasting presentations that could be heard from the restaurant every evening, we could not enjoy a single sunset nor obtain a little peace even from within the confines of our room. My Greek spouse had a little chat with the management and was quite appalled to learn the hotel prefers foreign tourists to Greeks because "they don't know any better" and that Greeks complain too much. Indeed, this hotel seems concerned only with raking in as much money as possible from foreign tourism with little regard to providing decent quality food, service and the impeccible quality that is afforded at truly four-star properties. We were disgusted by the petty, cheap, unprofessional approach of this hotel. Be warned... if they try to tell you that their credit card machine isn't working or that the "package" you are on requires payment in Cash only, this is a tax evasion scam that will leave you with little legal protection if you participate in such a transaction. Overall, we would not recommend this property at all.
