we have stayed at the hotel sofia 3 times and love the friendly atmosphere, quiet location and authentic greek style of the hotel but most of all we return for the friendly welcome we are guaranteed from all members of the family.
we are met on arrival as family and long standing friends.
Stavros the owner is a huge man with a huge heart and a love of music and dancing, his wife sofia is a quiet friendly lady with a wicked sense of humour, she serves up a tasty fresh breakfast and guests are treated to delicious eggs from their own chickens.
the two sons vasili and manolis run the bar and provide poolside snacks, vasili has a mine of information about the island and is happy to advise on the best places to visit.
our rooms were comfortable and cleaned every day,the towels were changed regularly and extra bedding or pillows were provided on request.
we were treated to a traditional night out with the family and a hearty barbeque on the saturday evenings.

we look forward to our next visit and know we will not be dissapointed.
this is a 2 star hotel that treats its guests with a 4 star welcome.
Air conditioning adds to cost

We were under the impression that air conditioning was included in the price. This proved not to be the case and as it was expensive and had not allowed for this our budget went out of the window at the outset. This factor was major disappointment to us and we felt we had been misled when booking. The Sofia hotel is nicely located and does not suffer from noise. The rooms are adequate although not much of a view and the bathroom suffered from flooding for an hour after a shower. the continental breakfast was above average and there was an great poolside bar run by the owners son which was a focal point for guests returning from their meal outs at one of the excellent local tavernas. Nick the Greeks Fish taverna was quite special.
Rude owner and plumbing problems

A very basic hotel where the rooms are dark and most of them have no outlook. We encountered major plumbing problems in the bathroom and when we complained the owner was extremely rude. On the plus side the Sofia was situated 2 minutes stroll from the beach and it had a nice pool side bar. Air conditioning was extra and very expensive. why they do not install meters and you pay for what you use is beyond me and would be an ideal solution. Whilst we enjoyed the resort of Kambos we certainly will not be returning to The Sofia Hotel
A real gem on the island of Samos

This is a little gem, if you like the "small & friendly" holiday. The hotel is situated about 100 metres from the main road which is bordered by the sand/shingle beach. There is a fine selection of bars and tavernas from right on the doorstep to within ten minutes walk and a number of mini marts as well.

The Rooms are clean and welcoming, the facilities being as expected in Greece. You can hire a fridge for your room at a good price and also brand new air conditioning units can be hired for the summer months, although in September we didn't need it as the evenings are on average 14degressC.
The Staff are very friendly and if your lucky as we were they will invite you along to dine with them for great authentic Greek nights...

The focal point of the Hotel is the pool and pool bar, which is open all day and is manned by the owner's son, a friendly chap who will happily chat with you. Stavros stages a BBQ in the pool area every Saturday night and this is a great opportunity to meet everyone and discuss your adventures on this wonderful island. You will even get to meet Mario, the resident guard dog (only kidding, he''s a little westy) he happily does his rounds throughout the day and even keeps the cats in check.

Finally and by no means least, Sofia (Stavros''s wife, the hotels named after her) makes a mean breakfast and by Greek standards its more than adequate, with a different menu each day (although it is set), watch out for the doughnut balls, there fantastic.

There's a real family feeling about this hotel something that is all too rare these days.
Anyway, September 2005 was our third visit to this great hotel and we are going back in the spring, happy to be one of the many regular repeat visitors..

Check it out for yourselves, but don't tell too many people, it's a well-kept secret.
