Top Local Tips for Naxos
Take time to see the rest of the island We rented a car for 2 days and drove to smaller villages, sites of antiquities and ancient small Byzantine churches. The scenery is breath-taking, but the Greek signage leaves a little to be desired. Make a list with the first few letters of the Greek alphabet for the places you want to see, and it will be easier to spot the locations on the signs, in cases where they aren't also posted in the Latin alphabet. Most of the sites you'll want to see will require some walking, so wear the right shoes!
Climbing Mount Zeus (Zas) If you get bored of lounging around in the sun and want to do something a little more physical but still touristy, I can recommend climbing Mount Zeus. Wear sensible shoes, halfway up it does turn from a walk to a climb, and it's a little precarious at times, (follow the little piles of stones for the best route up, I didn't and it got a little scarey trying to get back down a steep gravel incline when I realised I'd gone wrong). But the panoramic views from the top are astonishing, and it takes 3-4 hours to get up and down, so you feel like you've done your exercise by the time you complete it. Nice tavernas in Filoti (the village you set out from) for when you finish your trek too.
