Top Local Tips for Leros
Getting around on foot We walked most of the island with our two children (7 and 8) - they are good walkers and so this was not a problem, however, the roads are surprisingly busy for such a small island and they are not really geared up for pedestrians. There were a few hairy moments and you have to be on your guard. Also, there is no decent road map of Leros - we had the standard one that you buy in the supermarket but it is not detailed enough and we lost our way a few times! If you fancy a good walk then I would recommend the walk to Klidi - this is the hill that overlooks Alinda bay with the mast on top - you can get up to the top by road past the friendly army check point!. Tthe views are amazing. On the way down there is a dirt track about half way down on the left that takes you back down to Alinda. The walk up to the castle from Platanos is also great - walk up the road following the windmills to get a really peaceful view, and then come down using the steps.
