This hotel is very hard if not impossible to contact on line although they provided an E mail booking form on their website. There was no response. In the end we just rang and they confirmed a room for myself and wife arriving from Athens. Using an online agency was a waste of time, they came back with the comment that there weren't any rooms available at the Hydroussa shortly before the hotel itself confirmed one for us. The hotel is nicely situated on a pleasant square of lemon trees. Nothing is very far in Hydra town so the short walk from the port with minimal week-end baggage was easy. Had we come from abroad or were staying for more than a few days we could have used one of the donkey taxis to carry the load. The hotel itself is in an old stone building and has a very interesting lounge with antiques. In summer one has a substantial, but unexciting buffet breakfast in the beautiful courtyard shaded by the largest rubber tree I've seen in Europe. The double room was 90 euros per night, in full season, with breakfast and taxes included. The room was bare but adequate with an air conditioner and a shower type bathroom which had seen better days. It was also equipped with a small fridge and a double bed and minimal furniture ( a mirror dresser, a small TV that didn't seem to work and took too much space on the dresser top, and a small but adequate cheap closet with several drawers plus a few chairs. Definitely not the Ritz, but on a small Greek island in summer all one needs is cleanliness and comfort, which was provided. Although judging by our room, the hotel does need some renovation. The reception desk provides beach towels on request which is useful. The hotel does not have a large army of staff but those few we met including the desk receptionist were pleasant and polite. There are cheaper places in Hydra town and several much more expensive, for a middle budget holiday maker. It was satisfactory. We enjoyed our weekend stay and it was with three stars. I would not recommend either the hotel or Hydra for a stay longer than a few days. If you come from abroad, also plan to visit Aegina, Poros and Spetses for variety.
