Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel St Nicolas Bay Agios Nikolaos

Good but not good enough.

from Stoutlers
Just returned from spending a week in the Saint Nicolas Bay and having stayed in many genuine five star hotels i left here feeling short changed. Undoubtably the first impressions are good and the hotel is in a good location but scratch the surface and it is found wanting. It certainly lacks a lot of the qualities and service touches that truly make a five star hotel. Let me explain.

When we arrived to our complimentary wine and friut in the room would it have been too much to expect wine glasses a plate and a knife to enjoy same. No trouser press, ice or tea making facility in the room. No face cloths in bathroom (they do not exist in Greece judging by the response when we requested one) or decent soaps and lotions to wash with. No service by the pools or beach unless you go looking for it which is unacceptable in this class of hotel. I also object to being limited to one beach towel all day and having to bring that from your room. That is not a five star or luxury service.

The food options and menus are limited and the quality of food average at best. Why can you only eat sandwiches at the pool but not in the pool restaurant and why can you eat a burger in the restaurant but not at the pool? And why oh why can you not get butter served at the pool restaurant? It became so ludicrous that it was laughable and even the staff began to see the stupidity of it all. The cost of drinks was high and if i am paying 9 euros for a brandy i would at least expect it to be served in a proper brandy glass and not in a cheap tumbler. The swimming pool and beach were not kept to the clean standards expected which spoiled the lovely small beach area for the majority of guests.Come on StNB do you not understand the needs and expectations of your customers!!!!

We ate in Ag Nik and can recommend La Strada and Migomas which served good food with excelent service. Migomas overlooked the lake and the live piano was a nice touch.

Whilst the staff at StNB are always willing to help they are inexperienced and poorly managed. Eventualy after a week you cant help feeling that you are in the middle of a domestic argument as the tension between staff and management is very apparent. Good service should be discrete and that only comes from well trained and confident staff.

Remember, happy staff equals happy customers.

At the end of the holiday i felt i had paid for a service which sadly was not delivered. The lack of a customer service questionnaire summed up the situation as it was obvious that this hotel does not appreciate or value the comments of its customers. If you are happy to pay over the odds for a lovely looking hotel, go ahead but if you appreciate good attentive service, go somewhere else.

Very impressed, but a little quiet perhaps.

We have just come back from a lovely week at the Saint Nicholas Bay and were very impressed with the hotel. As the beginning of May is the start of the season, the hotel was not very busy but you can tell that they will be ready when they hit capacity later in the season as the service that we received was excellent and possibly a little too attentive at times due to the staff/customer ratio.
On arrival you must ensure that you listen to the person who escorts you to your room as there are no signposts anywhere and the hotel and its grounds are a bit of a labyrinth. Although the rooms are very nice, spacious and clean some of the expected small touches are missing as they strive for a minimalistic approach such as there are no facilities in the room for making a hot drink and the lack of a shower curtain means that the bathroom area get soaked when you have a shower. The bathroom did have a nice feature in that there was a long narrow window that you could only look out of at eye level if you are in the shower and looked all the way through the bedroom and out to sea.
The hotel itself is great with its own private, but very small beach and numerous sun loungers spread out along the rocks and around the pool with none of the dreaded (German?) towels spread out before breakfast. The general manager aka 'Mr Grumpy' can be seen daily all around the hotel keeping his staff in check.
The breakfast service was very good, however the bar prices are on the steep side, the taxi into 'Ag Nik' itself only costs 5 euros each way and there are plenty of places to grab some very good food and drink. The car seems to be relatively cheap if booked out there and AVIS delivered and collected the car with a complimentary upgrade.
All in all, an excellent place to have a relaxing holiday. The hotel is more geared towards couples with its good Spa facilities (massage costs €45) and I got the impression that the children that were there needed to be quieter than they would have liked to maintain the tranquillity.

Shabby Hotel

from The Five star Gang
Myself and my wife stayed at this hotel in August 2005 and were very disappointed. Having stayed in four other deluxe hotels in Crete, three in this area. The Elounda Beach, The Elounda Marie and The Porto Elounda. We booked a front sea-view bungalow with Thomas Cook tour operators and were very disappointed. Our room was a two storey apartment with no sea-view. The bedroom and the bathroom were the worst we have ever encountered.

The food and service were equally poor, and the general standard of care no better. Complaining to the management and tour operator did not bring about any satisfaction.

This Hotel is only three star, at best, and would suggest that people look at the hotels above to see a deluxe standard hotel, certaintly not this one.

Fantastic time

We stayed in one of the deluxe seafront bungalows at the St Nicolas Bay in October 2005 and really enjoyed it. Our room was beautiful and there were nice touches such as complimentary fruit and wine on arrival. The view was lovely and the food was delicious and varied every night. We had free half board as a special out of season deal with manos travel, which seemed to be the cheapest and also had lots of choice of flights. There are no direct scheduled flights to Crete from the UK so it works out easier to go chartered. Car hire in the area was reasonable and there are plenty of things to see, but driving can be a bit scary in Crete. I disagree with comments about uncomfortable beds but agree that the drinks in the bars and restaurants are a bit of a rip off. Buy wine from the supermarket and drink it before dinner! Highly recommended.

as gorgeous as last year!

from MedFan
Having had a fantastic few days here in September 2004, we decided to return for a week in October 2005 (in 20 years travelling throughout Europe and the Americas, only once before have we returned to the same hotel). We had been tempted by the new Blue Palace Hotel in Plaka (just past Elounda) but having read the reviews on trip advisor we decided to play safe and return to St Nicolas Bay. We were pleased with our decision. We visited the Blue Palace and were disappointed by the rigidity of the design of its pool suites - perhaps when the hotel's planting matures, it will look better in its surroundings. It couldn't be further from the design of the St Nicolas Bay which just melts into the landscape. We were pleased to see the same staff members who provide exceptionally polite and courteous service (if a bit laid back). We stayed in the same room as last year - very spacious and comfortably furnished and with its own private pool looking across the bay. We love the twice a day maid service.

We ate in the hotel at the Kafeneon for the Cretan Symposium and special Barbecue evenings. Both times, the food was excellent, the service impeccable and the atmosphere was great.

Will we be returning in 2006? Very likely ... but for longer than a week!

Lovely hotel !

from Chimpo
Cannot beleive some people are knocking this! We have just come back from a 11 night stay here for our honeymoon and it was top notch.

We had honeymoon package and a room with our own pool which was lovely. We stayed B&B and it was great. Room service everyday modern clean rooms.

We ate in Ag nik everynight as this is a cosmopolitan town and really picturesque. Approx 25 mins pleasant walk from hotel to ag nik or 5 euro taxi fare.

All in all a great 5 star hotel.

Hope this helps some people !

Very relaxing holiday!

from Trinn
We have just returned from a very relaxing holiday at this hotel. Previous comments were noted before we went therefore we were slightly concerned about what to expect. We found the hotel facilities were generally very good. Our accommodation was excellent and the private pool was a real treat (cold, but very nice!). We found the staff very efficient although rather 'serious' - one or two found it difficult to break out into a smile - but we wouldn't let that affect our holiday. We were on a Bed and Breakfast basis and although we tried the lunchtime restaurant a couple of times we found it uninspiring and too expensive and chose to take a walk to the local tavernas. We did not eat in the hotel in the evening, firstly because it was too expensive and secondly because there was very little atmosphere - possibly because most of the guests had the same opinion as us and went into Agios Nikolaos for some Greek atmosphere. Our favourite eating place was Pelagos Fish Taverna - we couldn't keep away and neither could many of the other guests from St Nicholas Bay Hotel. If the hotel could review it's food and drink prices we believe that it may encourage more guests to use their restaurants and bars - thus bringing in some life into the beautiful surroundings provided. It could be said that if you have got to ask 'how much' you can't afford it. We can afford it, but choose not to pay exorbitant prices when there is an alternative.

Nice hotel bad service!!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Just came back from the st nicolas hotel. The hotel was better than I had expected really, more like a spa village. We had a sea view 'bungalow' which was up to standrad and the facilities were good, good spa, nice pools and the private beach was lovely but maybe a bit small. The most suprising aspect for me was that I would say that at least 75% of the guests were french or Flemish, hardly any brits which I felt was a nice change. If you have kids there are pretty good facilities there with the kids club lady 'Roula' (I think!) was fantastic with our daughter. But the downsides although not enough to make it a bad choice were firstly the staff and service which was pretty bad, they dont seem to realise that good service goes along way, it was basically run by a load of old blokes in magerial positions shouting at a load of scared and frankly uninterested waiting staff. Also the background music was dreadful..lots of soft ballads and pretty much the same cd everyday..why not some local cretian music guys!!!! The restaurants are nothing to write home about, although the food was OK it was nothing special, and the lunches weren't great pretty bland and over priced. My advice would be to get in a cab from the hotel and get the 5 euro cab ride down to Agios Nikolas which is full of some great restaurants by the lake, we had some great meals in LA Casa and restaurant Du Lac, lots of nice fresh fish and local cretian wine at half the price of the hotel. Also worth checking out is Elounda but my secret tip of the day would be to get a cab to Placka which is just beyond Elounda, it's a 16 Euro Cab ride from the hotel, it comprises of about 4 tavernas and 1 shop by the water which is beautiful under the moonlight. we went to Taverna Plaka which is in the middle and were welcomed with opened arms and it was also I have to say the best fish we had while we were there(the restaurant is owned by a family who go out and catch their own fish!!) we even ended up staying longer and joining in on a sing song with the locals(definetly a highlight)
So overall I would recommend this hotel but only on B&B, go if you like spa treatments as these are good, the weather is very hot but quite windy on certain days, and make sure you get down there early to reserve your sunbed!! 4 out of 5 Stars

5* Hotel, 1* People

from marcruse
Despite the storm force wind (that was very warm) and an afternoon of rain (also warm), we found this hotel was great accomodation and good location. However the staff were absolutely diabolical and the service was equally poor. This applies, with only one or two exceptions to management all the way doiwn to waiting staff. We didnt let this spoil an otherwise good holiday - after a couple of days we just made a point of always eating out (taxi into Ag. Nik E5) and popping out to local bars for drinks/coffee etc. (Try Marie - 5mins walk in direction of Elounda nothing is a problem!)

Nice Location

from A TripAdvisor Member
nice location, friendly staff, spacious basic rooms, good service but no 5 star level, expensive food and drinks for what you get, inside hotel boutique closed from 1 to 6 pm selling fake Gucci and D&G caps (soooo cheap), hotel manager tells you all the time to tell him if you have any problem but when you call for one he can not solve it like getting you an iron to the room, no high speed internet (they have a WIFI equipment which does not work)

Top Local Tips for Crete

Let the hotel take the strain Get the hotel to arrange prive car transfers to/from the airport.

Dont let the walk into town put you off! The taxis have a set fee of five euros from the town to the hotel and theres tonnes of them so you never have to wait.

Avli Go to Alvi. Lovely back street taverna, head waiter friendly. Good food, reasonably priced, a bit away from things.
