Top Local Tips for Crete
Driving In Crete The Greeks are known for their laid back approach to life. But once the Cretians get behind the wheel of a vehicle they become the Cretians answer to Dick Dastedly from the Wacky Races! We driven in most places and I have to say the experience we had in Crete takes some beating! My tip leave the driving to the Cretians!
Rodopos Peninsular We thought we'd explore the Rodopos peninsular about 8 km to the west of Maleme and try to find the little monestary at the end of the peninsular. It looks from the map that there's not too long a road to the desination on what appears to be a reasonable road. However, what was about 2cm on our map was in fact 10 plus miles of, 'off road' windy, bendy, rocky, sandy very rough track (couldn't go more than about 5-10miles per hour) Fantastic bay at the end (especially for snorkelling) - Then a 10 mile journey back - So what would take 10 mins on a normal road, in fact takes at least one hour there and an hour back. Good but you have to be very, very careful on the road.....especially as we were on a motorbike.
Go to Chania If staying in the Chania region on Crete, definitely take a day to visit Chania town. The buses are cheap and air-conditioned, as well as being regular. Chania itself is really nice - lovely harbour front and old Venetian buildings and cobbled streets. We recommend eating in a restaurant called Ela, which is in an old Venetian townhouse. Very good food and atmosphere, with Greek music after 8. Be warned though - the bus station can be very confusing, so make sure you listen carefully to the announcer for the bus number that you'll need to get home!
