This hotel and the multilingual staff are wonderful. The main restaurant and Fontana Amorosa, a pretty restaurant are delicious. The rooms are spacious and very well decorated. The staff is nice. We are really happy and would like to come back!

Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Knossos Royal Village Limenas Hersonissou

What a disappointment

from Sam1972
On our arrival the hotel seemed lovely and when we were taken to our room, we were not disappointed. We had a family room, which had 2 rooms and 2 bathrooms. It was very nice, but then again it should have been for £500 extra we paid for it. My in laws room was dismal and although they did have the sea view they paid for the room was very dark, damp and basic. The balcony door did not shut when it rained the water just flooded in through it. The window also had the same problem.

The food in the hotel was never very hot. There was a good choice but it concerned me that the food had not been fully cooked. When someone said the soup was not warm enough the waiter offered to put it in the microwave. That could have been a laugh if all the guests had ask for the same thing! During the day the choice of food was dismal and the had no children dishes. You could only order an adults meal for and adults price. We have a 2 year old daughter and on many days the only thing available were chips. We found going to the local Spar and being able to buy yogurts a god send. Both my husbnad and I had to send food back as it was stale and when we ate at the Pool Bar one day we both had the same thing and were very ill. Stay away from the tuna salad.

The golf buggies that spped around the grounds also mean that it is not very safe for the children to run around. We had to keep a firm hand of our daughter when walking in the hotel.

The ground were lovely and the hotel being right on the beach was great. But there was no where to go if it rained. All the seating area and food places where outside.

We will not being going back to the Knossos Royal Village and we will not being using any on there sister hotels.

Fantastic time at Knossos Royal Village

from ldjp
When I read the reviews of the hotel I was a little worried as most of them stated "5 star wouldn't give it 3". However, although it doesn't equal a 5 star from England it certainly beats most 4 star 'holiday' hotels. The accommodation we were in was of generous size, even though we only chose the 'basic' price room. There were two full size single beds joined together which made a larger than king size bed. My son, age 10, had a 'put you up' bed which was perfectly adequate. The storage space was vast and the bathroom & ground floor terrace were both really good sizes.

The surroundings outside were clean and pretty, with lots of palm trees and green areas and lovely tiled paths.

Food was superb. Yes the restaurant was busy most of the time but the staff were very helpful and cleared tables quickly between customers. If anything, there was too much choice and anyone watching their weight would have great difficulty. There were 3 chefs every morning and evening cooking certain items like pancakes, fried eggs, omelettes in a morning and deep fried fish, aubergenes, stir fries, etc at night, freshly in front of you. One thing I wouldn't recommend is the Aegean or Cretan BBQ night if you are on half/full board. Apart from the barbequed meat, the rest of the meal is just the same as the restaurant meal and at 29 euros per adult extra, it wasn't worth it.

We did take two nights off to go out to eat, one night into Hersonissos along the beach and the other up into Old Hersonissos which is 10 minutes by taxi and is well worth a visit. The small square is surrounded by lovely restaurants and the food was superb.

The pools were fabulous, two great pools near all the main facilities, then 3 other pools close to the sea which were still of a generous size and were quieter than the main pools. (There were also small shared pools attached to the private villas).

We've had a fabulous two weeks here. It was hard tearing my son away from the pools at the end of each day.

The Animation Team worked tremendously hard. Although we didn't join in the activities, preferring a more sedate existence, plenty of people did and seemed to enjoy doing so. They were really happy and encouraging at the children's mini disco and the various shows were performed with much enthusiasm. We would certainly recommend the resort/hotel to anyone.

d stayed longer

I spent a week here with my daughter and 5 year old granddaughter. The hotel/village contains everything you need for a lovely relaxing holiday - restaurants, pools, beach, shops.
We had a couple of cloudy days, which my daughter and I used to take a shopping trip into Hersonissos - we had to go separately while we left Livvy at the mini-club.
The mini-club staff were fantastic - Livvy loved them to bits, everywhere we went she was waving at someone or getting hugs and kisses from them. They were quite happy for her to stay with them for any length of time - sometimes she only stayed a few minutes, other times she stayed for a couple of hours. We just kept going back to check on her (usually to find her eating chocolate ice cream!) She loved the swimming pools and the water shute. She learned to swim - which made her holiday perfect. We were happy because she was happy.
The food was excellent. There was so much choice that we probably ate too much. The Cretian white wine was delicious. We occasionally treated ourselves to a cocktail in the evening. Bliss!
I'd love to go back next year - we'll see if I can get a free child place again - 2 weeks next time.

Aldemar Knossos Royal Village

from EricYu
I have done a lot of research before this trip and hereby would like to give my true feeling about the The Knossos Royal Village.

First, eventhough the hotel is rate as 5 star. Please note if you are a Hyatt or Four Season type of person and looking for LUXURY VACATION experience, please, try somewhere else (like Elounda All Suite Hotel) because you will be very disappoint. If you are budget spender but want good service + OK facility (nothing LUXURY) and then this is may be the place for you.

The Overall experience, I was pleased with hotel service with the money I have been paying for. I have pay EUR 210 per room (SEA FRONT VIP ROOM) for 2 person Halfboard basis. Following are my comments regarding to the hotel.

- Room - We have VIP SEA FRONT ROOM. If you look closely on the hotel map, this type of room hv a swimming pool in front of yr balcony and beach area just few steps after the swimming pool (again, this is not TOP-End design so don't fantasize 'infinity pool' etc). We hv ground floor room which in my opinion is better than first floor room. The ground floor room has its own furniture (table + chairs) in the balcony and you also literally own the swimming pool sunbeds infront of yr balcony. Beds are two single push together and there is a single sofa which can convert into a sofa bed. Good if you have a children (one) and company in the same room. Average room and bathroom size. Room furniture and amenities not at all LUXURY but very clean and everything is in order. Hotel change yr towel twice daily. No mini bar inside the room but with good size empty refrigerator which you can stack yr own drinks (nice touch in my opinion)

One small complaints is the hotel only offer blanket instead of Duvet inside the room.

- FOOD - We are on Halfboard basis including breakfast + dinner which all service in the main restruant. If you decide to hv dinner somewhere else or substiture for lunch, you get a value of eur 11 per person per meal. In view of pervious comments by other guests, to be honest I was under the impression the buffet style will be in the terrible layout with disgusting taste, but I was impressed. For breakfast there are wide selections (or say many) you can choose btw hot or cold dishes, there also a section staffs make you fresh eggs, pan cakes etc. Overall I think the breakfast experience is excellent.
Dinner again was prepare in the buffet style with wide arrange of cold, hot dishes with some of the dishes fresh made in front of you. There is a nice desert area. Taste wise may be not high-end but this is definitely worth the value (for me is eur 11 per person).

- SERVICE - very nice friendly team here. People in the reception, restaurant are very nice and freindly and you can feel they try their best to answer yr requirement. Animation team at hotel also eager to join you for the program and cheer the atmosphere.
There is no personal service ard the beach + swimming pool area but I hv no problem to take a short walk to the nearby beach bar to get the food and drinks.

One small complaints is the hotel lacking of good exotic drinks (bar quality very poor) and instead I hv to settle for bear or coke during day.

In my opinion you received more value of yr money by stay in this hotel compare to other high end (ie hotel in elounda area) with same money but room in the main building with distance to pool and beach. I hv notice all the suite rooms in the hotel is empty. Probably people feel for price of eur 400-500 per night they rather stay in Blue Palace or Elounda All Suite.

First time in Crete and love it

The hotel is really good. All facilities are crisp new or look like, pools are amazing, but reported to be little bit chemical, as I am not a pool swimmer. The suit room is big enough and has a french bed assembled from a two straight beds, though each of them are good to sleep for two. The food is pretty varied in a main restaurant, and of a superb quality. Choosing from HB and FB consider that dining in taverna f.e. in Hersonissos is about 30 euro for two w/o alcohol, as dinner voucher in hotel is 11 euro (drinks not included).
To dine in Hersonissos, you are highly recommended to get out from the main street up higher to a traditional villages which are 5 minutes away from the city center.
If you want to taste a real greek cousine rent a scooter its about 18 euro/day and get out the city. For example Milates village which is 20-25 km from the hotel aside of the Agios Nicolaos (old national) road. This place is usually visited by locals as a fresh fish outlet.
Please wear a helmet for your safety, if you don't care, note that fee for not wearing a helmet is 83 euro (dont repeat my mistake).

Great Hotel for a Wedding

from BPASouthport
We visited The Knossos Royal Village in Hersonissos, Crete for one week on the 23rd May 2006 Through Libra Holidays. I and the wife decided to upgrade to a VIP sea front room at an extra cost of £140 for the week which we felt was worth the money as we were approx 50 yards from the beach staying in block 7000. The place has around 5500 beds so if you want a sea view pay the extra.

If you can check out the Aldemar website for info on rooms etc (Very useful).
The reason for the trip was our friends were getting married in Greece and had chosen the resort for the wedding.
The Knossos Royal did our friends proud, the wedding was fantastic the staff at the resort were very helpful and friendly and the wedding day went without a hitch.

We only booked bed & breakfast which was served between 7:30 - 10:00am but this would fill anyone as it was buffet style.

OK the bad bits, Meals and Drinks on the complex are expensive but you have to remember it's 5 star.

The Beach bar restaurant serves between 11am - 6pm a full range of meals and snacks.
Average price 4 euro for a local beer (Mythos).
A lunch for 2 will set you back approx 20-24 euros but some of the dishes are worth it check out the Mussels and the Squid.

The Main bar (Cocktail Bar) is slightly more expensive with drinks costing around 5 euros.

The Animation team at the hotel had a full program of activities from 10am till 6pm including Football, Volleyball, Water Polo etc.

Overall i thought the hotel scored an 8/10 i would stay again at the Knossos and would stay at some of the sister hotels like the Royal Mare or the Cretion Village which were just down the beach from the Knossos.

(Tip) if you want to eat out in Hersonissos check out Cava d'Oro in the centre it will cost you 6 euros in a taxi to the centre but the restaurants well worth a visit.

We visited the restaurant twice in a group of eight and the food was fantastic with a massive choice of dishes on the menu with the average bill for eight approx 240 euro thats including wine and beer.

Loved it...will be going back again!

Me and my fiance had booked this hotel for our wedding/holiday as it looked so lovely in the brochures and on the website..and it really did itself justice. We and 60 of our guests who also came over thought the hotel was absolutely lovely. They upgraded some of the guests to family rooms and my parents and my sister in law and my nieces to a villa -free of charge. Every single one of the staff went out of their way to make our holiday and our wedding day special!!! The rooms that me and my hubbie to be was a sea front room, which had a pool in front of it, which was extremely handy. They were nice and clean and were kept clean over the holiday by the maids to a high standard.

The food was excellent...especially when it was Itailan nite..try a spicy feta chesse ball...they were scrummy... There was only one night when i did not like anything within the main restaurant apart from that night all other times were really scrumptious. The food in all the other restaurants were delcious as well. If you go half board and you decide to eat out that night you can ask for a voucher to the value of £11.00 for you to spend on you lunch..drinks not included though...but you can put it on your room bill..which we did, and pay it off when you want.

Although some of the bars were closed..we visted the main bar mostly which had a dj, and we also vistied the ampitheratre to watch some of the shows...which were brillant..they di Grease, Rocky Horror, Comedy Shows etc..very entertaining....i wondered if the entertainment staff ever slept as you would always see them up bright and early trying to get you to play darts, aqua aerobics, football etc!!!!

My nieces are 6 and 2 (nearly three) and there was ample for them to do..the mini club is great..and they get free drinks and ice cream etc etc. And the staff love the they get alot of attention!
There is water sports right on the beach with water boarding/skiing, paragliding, jet skiing etc. which is handy if you like that kind of stuff.

Again, the staff were excellent and did go out of there way to accomodate our needs. I will definately be going back there. There was only one problem with regard to the on site hairdressers..ask before how much the price will be or ask to see a price list as i got a shock on my weding day when i got presented with the bill!! and i didnt even like what was done..never mind ..a good day/holiday had by all!!!

Love the place, good deal.

We retured from Crete last week after visit for a week in Knossos royal vollage hotel.
This is the 7'th Greece island for me and my wife. this time we have dicided to take our three daughters with us (ages: 16,12,and 5).
We have arrived about 13:00, The reception process was a little bit long due a group just arrived, but the rooms were ready, and the porter drive us to our rooms with electric car.
The rooms are very comfortable, big, and clean. simply: nothing to complain.
Even our three daughters were in one room, it's big enough.
The hotel area is a village, spread over big area, so the buildings are only two floors high in a nice Greece style.
The food in the restaurant was O.K: great variety, also for childs. you can't be hungry. this for breakfast as well as for dinner.
The hotel staff is very polite, evry one is trying to do the best in order to assist us.
There are so many swimming pools, and a lovely beach-so it is far from been crowdy.
Not all the Bars were open, but you can get what you like in those who are.

Children activities: this is one drawback- for teenager very poor activities, a few games for 1Euro and thats it.
A second drawback: not enough parking area for all the rental cars which the guests rent.

Summery: no doubt it is hotel to return for a second time. I recomend it to everyone.

Food awfull,!

from A TripAdvisor Member
Food was dreadful, warm pasta with different items added, seemingly from previous days leftovers. Had to go to their sister hotel to eat and that was spot on.
A lot of the facilities namely restaurants and nightclub and beach bars were shut!!
Hotel grounds and pools were excellent though.
Rooms also adequate, nothing special!
Certainly not 5* more 3-4*!
The first hotel I have ever made a complaint to.!

Not as good as it used to be!

from peterpan236
I spent a week there with my boyfriend in August 2005.Having spent some time there about ten years ago,I was expecting something a lot better. The place I remembered had a truly magical atmosphere, the place I found certainly did not.We stayed in one of the so called VIP rooms overlooking the sea.The room was small and certainly not according to a 5 star hotel. Our balcony was so small you could hardly fit the chairs there ,not to mention a table. The food was nice only in the Lagoon restaurant and the breakfast just average.I've also seen cleaner rooms in lower class hotels.we had to give a fight each morning to get to sit by the pool and another to find some parking space for the car.And to think this used to be by far one of Greece's best hotels, packed with Arab princes, famous politicians and world famous stars.A hotel of impeccable service, amazing restaurants, doctors on call,a hotel that would meet your every need.I really wish you could have been there then, because now it's all gone.Such a waste! And very overrated too!

Top Local Tips for Crete

Too hot during summer! Be sure to put lots and lots of sunscreen! The Greek sun does not set until 9PM during summer. It got really hot when I was there. Thanks to the cool breeze from the beach and lots of shade, I was able to avoid a major sunburn.

Day Trips Like most trips - don't book from the hotel, you will spend £'ss more than you would if you book yourself. All trips advertised by reps are available to anyone and you save a lot of money by organising your own trips. However, only possible if you drive and hire a car; shop around, car rental is quite cheap in Hersonnisos but beware insurance scams. I would recommend Holiday Autos at the far end of town close to the large beach resort. Do some homework and buy a good guide book. Boat trips to Spinalonga island and Chrissie island should be booked at the ports and don't forget to haggle, prices will come down if you stick to a price. Chrissie Island is especially expensive and only worth going if weather is calm. Palace of Knossos is fantastic but go later in the day to avoid big crowds and the heat.
